New Song: Katy Perry ft. Skip Marley – ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ [Full]

Published: Friday 10th Feb 2017 by Rashad

If everything Katy Perry touches turns to gold (or better), we can assure you ‘Chained to the Rhythm’ will be no exception.

The first release from her yet-titled follow-up to 2013’s hit-ridden ‘Prism,’ Perry – with a little help from Bob Marley‘s grandson, Skip Marley –  is playing approximately no games with her Max Martin/Sia written comeback single.

Is it game changing and on track to turn the pop world upside down?  Eh…we wouldn’t say so.  Will it dominate radio in every market?  Unquestionably.

Hear it in full inside and you’ll see what we mean:

OMG! How does this woman keep doing this?  On one side of the coin, the song’s lyrics speak to Katy Perry’s career in a nutshell:  ‘Too comfortable, living on a bubble.”  She has a clear, comfortable, and almost predictable formula that is present on every single one of her albums. But…

From where we’re standing, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.  For as many naysayers will thumbs down the Skip Marley-assisted tune for its “safety,” something has to be said for one knowing her audience and giving them exactly what they want (a note some of her competitors should copy).  Even her most sonically daring singles in the past have still never gone so far left they alienated the core of her base.

This song will ZOOM to the top of the Hot 100 (if it doesn’t debut there) and radio will eat this up! It’s only been out an hour (as of time posted), and hell, we’ve listened to it three times already.  The girl has an uncanny ear for a hit and ‘Chained’ will be no exception.

Welcome back Katy!  You don’t even have to snatch my wig, I’ll just detach it and politely hand it over to you.

Your thoughts?

      • LISA LEVINE February 10, 2017

I just listened to Grace Jones she STOLE that hook

    • Fancy BISH February 10, 2017

Yep, she’s Grace Jones on this one…and that’s the problem I have with Miss Perry Baby lol…she’ll be Indiana Jones in her next video, Marty McFly in her third video, and Beetlejuice in her fourth video lol…and are we going to pretend like Prism wasn’t a hot mess? If this is the FIRST single, then get ready chile lol…I wonder if she listens to her own music…

    • BIGGESTAALIYAHFAN February 10, 2017

Kudos to her. I respect her for acknowledging what is going on in the country/world today. Still similar to her other work, but the lyrics out weigh the production.

  2. Tori February 10, 2017

    Album track- Yes!
    1-3 on the album- Yes!
Filler track- Hell no, it’s good!

  5. Myownstan February 10, 2017

What is the hype for?? This song is trash

    • Lana Del Fan February 10, 2017

I swear people automatically call songs garbage when they first come out. Bet you only listened to 4 seconds tops.

      • LOL February 10, 2017

LOL TRASH IS TRASH, NO MATTER HOW LONG YOU LISTEN TO IT. LANA’S MUSIC SHOULD TELL YOU THAT LMAO

      • Myownstan February 10, 2017

I did only listen to 4 seconds of it granted but after hearing it on the radio at work all day I stand by my comment it is absolute garbage

  6. WRTW? February 10, 2017

Exactly what we need from Katy, we don’t need her completely changing the formula and leaving her whole fan base behind

  7. Truthtea February 10, 2017

This is trash! Y’all who praise it have absolutely no taste in music! Gurl, bye!!!

  8. Mariah Carey February 10, 2017

We love Miss Perry but I Don’t is better dahhling!

  9. Belladonna February 10, 2017

At first I didn’t like the song as mush as her old ones but that’s because I didn’t get her Genius at first but then after a second listen I loved it & after reading the lyrics now I’m obsessed. Lol So yeah it’s lit & im buying & streaming. Can’t wait to see the real video & performance after the Grammys. P.s Top40 going to eat this up! Lol

    • Killian February 10, 2017

I agree ,watch out and see this be a hit especially after a video. Its so genius the way she incorporates a message into it.kudos Katy.

  10. Abel Minaj February 10, 2017

It’ll be a hit for sure but she’s kinda late with this type of instrumental. It sounds just like love me harder, style, Cheyenne, do what you want, body on me etc.

  11. Kiii February 10, 2017

Ehhh not really into it but it’s probably gonna be a hit. Hopefully she can actually make a cohesive album this time because her last album just sounded like a bunch of singles

  12. King February 10, 2017

I like it go Katy kat

  13. cocobutta February 10, 2017

The greatness of Sia is she always makes us know shes involved with her trademark isms.
Katy got a nice track here and its apart of the trending themes that are doing well on the billboard charts.

Katy could have maybe gave it more of her own stamp in terms of arrangement vocally but cool track all the same.

  14. Meteorite February 10, 2017

I like the tone of the song. It has a ‘very late night club on a spring/summer day’ feel to it.

    • AmbeRussell February 10, 2017

After reading that, it is the “last call” kinda song. Lights coming on, numbers exchanged, tabs being closed, ppl getting a last dance in. It isn’t fast enough to dance to, but it up beat and doesbfeel good and give a vibe.

  15. Katy is the pop princess February 10, 2017

She’s good and she has more solo number 1 singles than rihanna who latches on to rappers for hits. Rihanna is a fraud all her record sales are 90% single sales hopefully one day people will see that katy is the true pop queen in this generation.

    • Datredd23 February 10, 2017

Katy can never come for Rihanna’s discography sweetie never! Everyone knows that including u that’s why she’s on your seething mind

      • Katy is the pop princess February 10, 2017

Actually about 95% of rihanna’s sales are from singles. Rihanna is a singles queen whilst her friends have balanced single and album sales.

      • Swit Katz February 10, 2017

Honey she’s talking about solo number 1 singles. Rihanna has few of solo singles most of her number ones either have featured artists or she featured in the track. All her achievements are fake and undeserving. she’s a plague that has overstayed her welcome.

    • Swit Katz February 10, 2017

Rihanna is overhyped bcoz she’s a token black. She has no substance and is a lousy performer. She’s the black Jessica simpson but since she’s a token the media will keep riding her d***.

      • Rihboy February 10, 2017

And Katy’s a superb performer ? ? Please stop! Katy not meeting rihanna outside in stage or none of thee above! Yes I live for both girls but let’s not get delusional! The song is super generic ! But radio will eat it! Meets nothing on anti!

      • Truth February 10, 2017

Rihanna wishes she was Jessica Simpson. Jessica can actually sing and has a real bank account.

      • Keri Qween February 10, 2017

This is nobody but a pressed hive under this account lmao

    • LOL February 10, 2017

LMAO GURL SIT UNTIL KATY PAYOLA CAN SELL HALF AS MANY ALBUMS AS RIHANNA HAS LMAO. AND WHAT DA FUQ IS A JESSICA SIMPSON? LMFAO

  16. The One February 10, 2017

Sorry but this is basic trash.

  17. Lana Del Fan February 10, 2017

I love it already. I just hate the line “wasted zombie”. Cmon bruh. Lol y’all couldn’t pick a better line? I will stream the album though as I did with all her albums.

    • Belladonna February 10, 2017

That’s my fav part. Lol You can only say things like that in pop song. Lol It’s Fun!!!

    • 2bad2bme February 10, 2017

      My point exactly!

  18. Nobody February 10, 2017

    Illuminati s*** detected

    • Slayty is Chained to the Rhythm February 10, 2017

Girl bye, its not 2010, no one believes that nonsense.

      • Nobody February 11, 2017

        I’m a dude not a girl.

  19. Slayty is Chained to the Rhythm February 10, 2017

Well 2017 has its summer anthem already. It’should giving me late summer night poolside with friends vibe. I was expecting something with a little more energy or spunk but this is perfect. She sounds great on the track too. Love her or not, you can’t deny she crafts perfect pop.

    • Belladonna February 10, 2017

I felt the same way but then every time that beat drops you just fall more & more in love. Got Damn she’s good!! ??

  20. Molly #Stargirl February 10, 2017

    Yaaaaas queen !

  21. Slayty is Chained to the Rhythm February 10, 2017

The best part of this song is the political messages hidden through out it. Pay close attention the lyrics. I’m proud of her for using her platform to reach out to her audience and open up conversations. I’m ready for this album.

    • MusicFan103 February 10, 2017

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one hereto get that. LOL these other commenters are thinking this is Pop fluff, but its like a diss to Donald Trump and or his blind supporters who are chained to the lies and crap he spouts.

  22. LB February 10, 2017

LMAO there goes all the little hype Gaga had. Sucks because I loved her Superbowl performance, I think it was one of the best I’ve seen.

That said, I absolutely love this song, it is so great. I love the throwback disco sound, Max Martin did a great job.

    • LOL February 10, 2017

LMAO PLEASE, MOTHA MONSTER HAS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. THIS GENERIC MESS IS ALREADY FLOPPING ON ITUNES LMAO.

  23. RCR81 February 10, 2017

On what planet is this ‘reggae tinged’. Just because a relative of Bob Marley appears on the track doesn’t make it reggae – I wish eople would stop pedalling it as such, it riles me no end. Having said that, it is a great ‘pop’ song, Ill give Katy and Sia that much. I like Katy, but I am not feeling this at all. On to the next for me.

  24. ???????Chile, take this “Itty Bitty Piggy” to the market and make sure you hold her hand while crossing the street!??????? February 10, 2017

I’m not really feeling it….and this is coming from a Katy fan. I’ve even seen Katy stans calling it a flop already. I don’t think this will be Hot 100 #10, although it’ll definitely debut in the top 15. It just needs more time to work on me. I feel like the lyrics are too complicated with the beat.

  25. Beyonnaise February 10, 2017

What a shítty song…typical Sia trash.

  26. Mariahs little lamb February 10, 2017

    It’s not all that

  27. Everyone’s A Critic February 10, 2017

It sounds like the British sound has inspired the USA!
Sounds like Dua Lipa, Zara Larson, The Rockaby baby girl… and to confirm it, that Caribbean tinge that has been in the U.K. top 10 all of 2016 came in.
She has a massive hit on her hands with this. It’s catchy

    • Mother February 10, 2017

How is this a British sound, sis?

      • Everyone’s A Critic February 10, 2017

I live in the U.K., i listed who it sounds like. My opinion.

  28. JoJ February 10, 2017

This song is a mess, her monotone voice never gets better, it always sounds strugglish to me.The track has a nice retro vibe but the hook is not catchy enough, the lyrics are basic asf, just downright bland to me. I believe in judging a song by first listen and this one is a C. I wont even talk about that horrendous feature. Of course it will be number 1 because its katy and the song is radio friendly, it will be played a trillion times and we’ll be forced to like it, nothing new.

  29. unwritten February 10, 2017

Boring, uninspiring, cliche, cheesy! Horrible, just like her entire discography.

  30. MusicFan103 February 10, 2017

LMFAO. You can so tell the GP of this site is GP Pop fans who just hear the beat and thats about it. Only ONE other commenter realized the political message of this track. That is also why Skip is featured, because he is speaking a message not for high profile feature, if she wanted that she would have gotten J. Cole.

I think the song is not the best KP single ever, but I don’t hate it as a lead single because it is very different for her and I love that she is still keeping up with her political message from 2016.

Hello people listen and read the words, especially verses. This song is absolutely political and speaking about all of the decisiveness that has been going on since Trump began is want and now reign to be a politician.

Thats why it is a better than average song. It is so well crafted you can easily miss the political message and just here a party anthem, but in actuality it is a political message about the world we currently live in. Way to change you content Perry!

    • Killian February 10, 2017

Totally agree,I thought I was the only one who caught that!

    • Beyonnaise February 10, 2017

So what’s the political message exactly?

The world is f#cked up but hey let’s dance like nothings wrong?

      Cool…

  31. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 February 10, 2017

    Me like!

  32. Rihboy February 10, 2017

Dark horse still her best song to date! This is ok and will be filed into oblivion in weeks to come . Sorry I was routing for her, but this is a mcpop generic mess. The same thing most of you got on Rihanna for.

    • S****** Blonde February 10, 2017

Walking On Air is her best song, and the only one worthy of being called perfect pop music.

  33. Liam February 10, 2017

I like the political message and diss to trump in the song lolz…it’s a cute pop song

  34. Wonder Woman February 10, 2017

    ??? ???

  35. RoyalKev February 10, 2017

Hmmmm, Katy got another #1 waiting to happen! Congrats!

  36. Beyoncé Jackson February 10, 2017

The beat and melody are very generic. It doesn’t grab me like her previous singles although I like the message it conveys….

  37. Wonder Woman February 10, 2017

B**** is still stuck on kids bop @ age 32 I can not at the growth, she’s just the white female Trey Song/ Jason Derulo whatsoever when it comes to growth
    .
I seriously don’t know how a b**** disappears for 3 years and comes back with this steaming pile of s***
    .
Kiddy Kats I hope this was worth your wait
    .
What a downgrade Sia these lyrics are worse and 10x more shitier than Peacock….. she can suck a d***

  38. QOP Janet February 10, 2017

This is a mess. She never grows. You can stick any one of Katy songs on any one of her albums and it would fit. She’s a quasi-darker, brunette version of Taylor Swift. This mess of a song will go to number 1 because of the stupidity of the market and the brainlessness of her base but it’s a garbage song.

    • EllieLights93 February 10, 2017

Mad cause Janet is from the time of the dinosaurs? Dont fret, Janets next single will give her 3 #1 when it peaks at #111. LOL

      • Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

Janet has made a bigger impact on the music industry than your fave (whoever that is) will EVER achieve.

She doesn’t need to have #1’s anymore. She’s in a different league.

        Have a seat chile

      • LOL February 11, 2017

LMAO UM JANET HAS TEN NUMBER ONES BYTCH, ALL EARNED WITHOUT GUEST APPEARANCES, STREAMING OR PAYOLA, SO SIT UNTIL KATY PAYOLA CAN SAY THAT LMAO.

  39. Kisses February 10, 2017

I like that triple six sign she’s throwing up.

  40. MUSICHEAD February 10, 2017

    This song is wack af!

  41. JanStan February 10, 2017

Still reigning queen of rhythmic nursery rhymes. Im ok with that but to add a political message to such offensively basic lyrics and melody is just….no.

  42. #KC February 10, 2017

    GAGA IS SHOOK

    • LOL February 10, 2017

      LMAO OVER WHAT?

  43. Wonder Woman stan February 10, 2017

It kinda basic but after a few listens you know that it will be a smash u. Katherine knows her lane and sticks to it, can’t blame her gotta be careful tho cause her fans will eventually grow tired of the basciness but hey

  44. mr.m February 10, 2017

    she’s going to flop hard.

  45. BOOBIE February 10, 2017

It’s not bad but it’s not great. Wouldn’t have picked it as a first single IMO. And TGJ post about Bom Bidi Bom and how it slayed y’all lives.

  46. Trump girl February 10, 2017

It sound like something she already released.

  47. THE REAL February 10, 2017

Every inch of this was crafted for radio. It sounds generic and dated. There is absolutely nothing innovative here and it will likely be a smash b/c Top 40 music is TRASH.

    • Roab February 10, 2017

You are so so right. You hit the nail on the head. This is pop music at its worst. Manufactured, safe, and meant to be played over and over and over until it hits #1.

  48. Max February 10, 2017

Why Is it taking so long to hit #1 on iTunes??

    • MusicLife February 10, 2017

Slow and steady wins the race. Longevity.

  49. Walker February 10, 2017

Meh. I’m ready for alpha male hard rock, heavy metal, hip hop (hardcore hip hop…not Drake/Kayne) or country (real country…not T. Swift) to overtake the charts again. I’m tired of sugary girl-pop for 14 year old girls and gay men in arrested development. Enough. Pop music is corny.

  50. LOL February 10, 2017

LMAO DEATH @ THE PAYOLA KATS PRAYING THAT THIS FLOP WILL OUTDO QUEEN GAGA. THIS GENERIC FAIL IS STILL FLOPPING OVER AT ITUNES SO KEEP REACHING FOR THE STARS KIDS WHILE GAGA CONTINUES TO SLAY LMAO!

  51. OQRAM February 10, 2017

2010’s is such a lost and hopeless decade in music. Katy, Gaga, Bieber, Taylor, Weeknd, Ariana, Drake. THESE are the stars of the music scene now? THESE people? Really? I thought that the 2000’s was subpar, but damned in it didn’t get worse.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 10, 2017

Leave Gaga out of that basic list please. She has proved she can do it all. Different genres and all. But really changes of genres. Not supposed ones like Rihanna and Katy Perry lol

      • Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

Shitga is NOTHING without her shock antics and 1000 back up dancers LMAO

      • JanStan February 11, 2017

Her Golden Globe and Grammy for a Jazz Album say hi. And I say bye.

      • Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

That jazz album sold and got a Grammy cause of Tony chile LMAO

Ain’t no 1 here for Flopanne

      • JanStan February 11, 2017

Such a loser hater. And her Golden Globe for acting and Oscar nom were too? Stay pressed worthless POS.

      • Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

Golden Globe for playing a scary looking psycho?

Personally don’t think playing yourself is gg worthy bb

  52. east African girl February 10, 2017

This is not her best it sounds messy noise but i love dark horse was the best!

  53. Haters Gon’ Hate February 10, 2017

    1. I don’t use Katherine but I actually prefer this to ‘Firework’ which was annoying AF and probably one of the worse live vocal showings ever (Xfactor) since Cassie.

    2. As generic as it is – it’s simple, melodic and relatable – that’s what makes Pop hits that people remember. She’s never going to be innovative – she knows she can’t win with that. Y’all need to stop expecting Bjork like left field ishhh from Katy and your expectations TF down.

  54. Datredd23 February 10, 2017

    It’s average 7/10

It’s definitely not touching anything on ANTI though that’s clear

  55. MusicLife February 10, 2017

Nobody understand the undertones of a pop song with a political messsage.

  56. Kwinzy February 10, 2017

Don’t like it. Katy got this way of pronouncing certain words that’s always been annoying as hell to me.

  57. JOHNVIDAL February 10, 2017

The mesaage is good. It just isn´t credible from someone so damn basic. If you guys say Sia in somehow related to this then I truly believe the message cause Sia is an amazing human being that really knows what is going on, things 95% of people ignore, just brainwashing working and they don´t even care.

And the beat and music sound cool… BUT like something we had already hear from way less known artists. The fact that we also know Katy cannot pucking sing live to save her life makes me not be able to enjoy her basic music.

    • Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

Shitia is a stinky piece of Australian sh#t nowadays.

  58. Rosie February 10, 2017

LOL fuming up and down the post already calling a flop after less than 24 hours. Didn’t y’all do the same thing with Starboy’s first week sales?
This will probably pull a 24K Magic and peak a month later. Anyways, the song is boring but the production is sublime. She should’ve done another “Dark Horse” since trap music is huge right now.

  59. Beyonnaise February 11, 2017

Loved Sia back when she was all about quality instead of chasing hit after hit.

Her writing formula is f#cking tiring at this point.

  60. Now at youfr best game way tuesidnz February 12, 2017

    Nice
