Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll press play again on ‘Together Again’ – the second single from Janet Jackson‘s #1 album, ‘Velvet Rope.’  Holding down the top spot on the Hot 100 this week 19 years ago, the house-inspired tune was birthed after the death of Jackson’s dear friend who succumbed to AIDS.  Becoming her 8th overall #1 single on the tally, ‘Together’ went on to platinum status and has endured as a fan favorite from her prized discography.

Tuck in below to see who joined Jan in the top 25 this week in 1998:

one of her best vocals…. voice was gorgeous on the bridge and then the low register ad libs near the end… classic dance/pop song

  2. Nate February 2, 2017

Music is sooo dead! These kidbops can say what they want, but it will never be the same again.

  3. chileplease (first and only bih) February 2, 2017

Only one person in that entire list still making hits…lol

    • Mark111 February 2, 2017

      And who is that?

      • Chileplease (the first and only bih) February 2, 2017

Miss Beyoncé! Lead singer of destinys churrins ?

      • Mark111 /.\ February 2, 2017

I don’t see Beyonce’s name on that old chart, or even the new chart for that matter. DC haven’t released a song in a decade. Nice try tho. But Usher is still in the top 40 TODAY. 🙂

      • Chileplease (the first and only bih) February 2, 2017

She was still a part of the group…..and STILL making hits. I didn’t say she was being credited as a solo artist. I said she’s the only person on that list still making hits and I told the truth.

RIP Mike Andrews, One of the dancers from The Velvet Rope era passed away just two weeks ago, he is actually in the video for Together Again “Dancing in the moonlight i know you are free cos I can see your star shining down on me”.
One of the best Pop Anthems ever made! Queen Janet x

  5. Nate February 2, 2017

Janet doesnt near enough credit for songwriting. I mean homegirl wrote all these hits!!

    • ronnoc February 2, 2017

She doesn’t get enough credit for anything she’s done.

  6. MUSICHEAD February 2, 2017

I still remember buying the Together Again single from Walgreens that year for the Deeper Remix. But truthfully, every song on that chart is a hit! Damn I miss the 90’s.

  7. Janriah Houxton-Blige February 2, 2017

    Empress Janet!!!

  8. PopASquat February 2, 2017

I Loved Truely, Madly, Deeply By Savage Garden. I was 7 @ The Time. Back Then, That song Made Me cry For No reason ?

    • PopASquat February 2, 2017

      Truly*

    • S****** Blonde February 2, 2017

I love that song too, it makes me nostalgic, especially the “I want to bathe with you in the sea” part, Savage Garden was awesome.

  9. Elsie February 2, 2017

Grandma Janet did she have her grand baby yet

  10. Cough Cough February 2, 2017

ICONIC.. LEGENDARY… ORIGINAL! 7th biggest hot 100 artist in history for a reason, y’all!

  11. Stephy February 2, 2017

Usher’s Nice & Slow is so nostalgic for me. Jesus. Anyways, Velvet Rope = masterpiece.

  12. S****** Blonde February 2, 2017

This is her most known song around the world, a real pop classic.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 2, 2017

      You know the truth.

  13. Mark111 February 2, 2017

This album is so good, she set the bar with personal theme albums.

  14. Jon February 2, 2017

    It’s 7 o’clock on the dot
    I’m in my drop top
    Cruising the streets
    Ah yeah

  15. JOHNVIDAL February 2, 2017

This was a damn great track. In fact it is her only well known song in many countries like Spain. The album and era were so on point and innovative artistically wise.

    • Cough Cough February 2, 2017

If that were the case Janet wouldn’t be able to do world tours, throughout her career, to this day even though she cancelled cause she was pregnant. She may not have been as big as she was in the US but Janet has many international hits and albums hence her many WORLD TOURS.

      • Mark111 /.\ February 2, 2017

And her classic sold 20+ million WW. These Madonna stans think they’re slick by saying she’s not big around the world.

      • JOHNVIDAL February 3, 2017

Janet can do world tours because she is well known, her name. And because she is a great performer. But not because she has many worldwide hits. I don´t understand why soem people cannot take facts. I didn´t say everywhere, I said in some countries, and I gave an example. Nobody in Spain (almost nobody) would recognize any other Janet song except for Together Again. It´s a fact. Madonna (not that you mention her) but also Mariah and definitely Whitney and Celine (and sadly Rihanna and the likes) have had more hit singles in a country like Spain (hits that are remembered) than janet. I´m sorry. Her fans can say whatever they want always in these cases. But truth is she is so behind in album sales even in THE USA for a damn reason.

  16. Sally Sue February 2, 2017

Is it wrong to say that I blame Britney Spears and co. for the downfall of good music? I mean think about it, music didn’t start to take a crash nose dive until they stepped on to the scene and every record label wanted a “Britney” or “Backstreet Boy”. I feel that the 90’s t*** pop explosion paved the way for the crappy music we hear now on the radio.

    • PopASquat February 2, 2017

Soulja Boy Is Responsible For Music’s Downfall.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 3, 2017

You are right sally. It all started around 1999 and 2000. It had a lot to do with the beginning of the downloading era. It just started to cheapen everything.

  17. eric February 3, 2017

These were some of her best years. The Velvet Rope tour was the first time I saw Janet in concert. I miss the style and artistry she had during this period. Now she lets Gil conceptualize everything, and his ideas I’m sorry to say are in awfully bad taste.

  18. Now at your best game way tuesidnz February 7, 2017

    Nice
