Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 1991 #FBF

Published: Friday 3rd Mar 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature “Chart Rewind” – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll fast backward to 1991 to find music’s “vocal trinity” – Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion – dominating the chart’s top 5.  Carey, whose third single ‘Someday’ dethroned Houston’s ‘All the Man That I Need’ (one of two #1 singles found aboard the songstress’sI’m Your Baby Tonight’ album), was joined by then-rising powerhouse vocalist Dion and her third single, ‘Where Does My Heart Beat Now.’

Together the trio led a slew of memorable hits, including entries by fellow chart-topping divas Gloria Estefan and Madonna.  See who else joined the quintet in the top 25 this week 26 years ago:

So many great female artists back then. Not just the vocal trinity but Gloria, Madonna and Oleta. All the Man That I Need is one of my favourite Whitney songs. I feel it is overlooked sometimes in favour of the more obvious choices.

    When music was greatness!

  3. Walker March 3, 2017

Those were the days. Depressing to see how much music has devolved. 2017 can’t even carry 1991’s hat.

    • HiElsie March 3, 2017

I only wish the female Rb stars of today bedises beyonce and rihanna could see the same success
Now if Remy ma is speaking accurately about what Nicki be doing behind the scenes, think about what rihanna and Beyonce are doing to the Rb girls, far as blocking them from award shows, red carpets, performances

      • ? + ✈ = ? March 3, 2017

Beyonce blocked her group members Letoya and the other children

  4. S****** Blonde March 3, 2017

Hands down the best vocalist trifecta in Pop music history. The best song on that chart was Enigma’s Sadeness Part 1, such a masterpiece.

    • Fancy BISH March 3, 2017

Your taste is exquisite dahhhling lol

      • JOHNVIDAL March 4, 2017

S******´s taste is great! I don´t know why he gets so much hate in this blog. They always call him racist, and I´ve always wondered why. I had never seen him saying anything racist. And suddenly, the other day I realized why. A Beyonce fan pretty much called him racist because he thinks Lady gaga is a better entertainer. That was pretty much all the reasoning. Now I know for a fact he is not racist 🙂

  5. LmfaoHoe March 3, 2017

Lord those are my songs by each lady. God when quality was the focus and main concern.

  6. JOHNVIDAL March 3, 2017

Yaaaasss!!! One of those times when the word EPIC is justified.

  7. BEYSTAN_ SINCE 1997 March 3, 2017

What a time to be a pop star!

  8. Coolness March 3, 2017

All The Man That I Need was not the only #1 on I’m Your Baby Tonight. The title track also topped the charts.

    • IKNOWTHETRUTH March 3, 2017

THANK YOU. THEY ALWAYS TRYNA SAY WHAT SOMEONE DID NOT DO WHEN THEY DID.

    • XYZ March 3, 2017

They said that there were two off of that album

  9. KatyKat1 March 3, 2017

And in 1991 some people were saying that those songs couldn’t compare to what was charting at the same time in 1965 (the same distance between ’91 and now). You dinosaurs need to get out of the past.

    • Truth March 3, 2017

Eh? Well maybe they were right. But we’re comparing 1991 to 2017, not 1965.

  10. Truth March 3, 2017

    Correct your Whitney info.

  11. Kev Kev March 3, 2017

Rashad some simple research would have let you know that Whitney’s I’m Your Baby Tonight was also #1 on the Hot 100. ugh.

  12. Abc March 3, 2017

Whitney actually had TWO #1 singles from that album, the title track ‘I’m your baby tonight’ topped the charts before ‘All the Man That I Need’ get your facts straight or I’m gonna have to find a new blog to follow!?

  13. Jamon March 3, 2017

He said “one of the two #1 singles”. Good times though. I haven’t listened to the radio since 2010. I loved the nineties and early to mid 2000’s.

    • Casual March 3, 2017

Wow, what a statement: “I haven’t listened to the radio since 2010.”

    • JOHNVIDAL March 4, 2017

Radio and mainstream in general is trash. I can see one of these current charts and I assure you I don´t know 70% of the songs. Why should I botter anyway? Those will be forgotten the next year. It´s appalling. Listening to a commercial radio station can make you brain-dead. If I listen to teh radio I listen to stations which play only older songs and classics or at least a mix of new and old. The state the music industry is really bad. There are a few exceptions. More than half of those songs wouldn´t be tehre is it wasn´t for streaming anyway.

      • King B May 10, 2017

You stan for Gaga though. You know ” ro ma ra ma ma” or ” p-p-p poker face ” or ” Judas “. Two of it are twins.

  14. Del March 3, 2017

Whitney’s 11 career #1s on the Hot 100: Saving All My Love For You (1985), How Will I Know (1986), Greatest Love of All (1986), I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) (1987), Didn’t We Almost Have It All (1987), So Emotional (1988), Where Do Broken Hearts Go (1988), I’m Your Baby Tonight (1990), All the Man That I Need (1991), I Will Always Love You (1992), Exhale (Shoop Shoop) (1995).

Mariah has 16 (the most ever by a female artist on the Hot 100), Celine has 4.

    • Del March 3, 2017

      Mariah has 18 #1 hits

    • Jaye Topete March 3, 2017

      Mariah has 18 not 16.

  15. @ASAPicon March 3, 2017

    A legendary era!

  16. Ropeburn March 3, 2017

I see Chris Isaac’s “Wicked Game’ on that chart. That has got to be the sexiest damn song evah! And the video is scorchin hot without being nasty.

  17. IRA March 4, 2017

I honestly don’t see what’s so great about that 1991 chart, TBH. You have a handful of generic and random rock acts (Telsa, Bad Company, Styx, Sting…) Bubblegum kiddie R&B/Hip Hop (Tracie Spencer, Tevin Campbell, Another Badd Creation)…Dentist Office Music (Chris Issak, Gloria Estefan, Surface, Wilson Phillips, Celine, Whitney, Mariah, Oleta Adams)…corny pop rap (C&C Music Factory, Gerardo)…fluff (Madonna)…one hit wonders (Tara Kemp, Timmy T, Londonbeat, Enigma)…Playboy Hip Hop (LL Cool J.)

    Not much has changed.

    Bubblegum kiddie R&B/Hip Hop: Migos
Dentist office music: Ed Sheeran, Bruno
    Fluff: Taylor/Zayn, The Chainsmokers
Playboy Hip Hop: Future, Drake (I know they’re not on the singles list, but they’re on the scene)

TGJ only posted the current top 5, but I’m sure the rest of the top 25 has what can be called today’s equivalent to the rest of 1991’s top 25. The names and faces may have changed, but you can pretty much get the same thing now as back then.

    • Jasmine March 4, 2017

You miss the subliminal message of this article. You don’t get artists with massive vocal talent anymore. There is no comparrison between current songs and 90s songs the showcase real vocal talent. Today, the artist’s voice is not the machine in the music, it is the production overall. In the 09s the machine was an artist’s voice combined with decent production.

  18. kevin March 4, 2017

#25…our first look at a young Mary J. Blige.

#21…Young Tevin Campbell’s first solo hit record.

#4….Celine’s first hit record in the US

  19. Justafan March 4, 2017

Aaahhh the era when there was less BS. Just voices
