Ed Sheeran Covers Rolling Stone / ‘÷’ Set To Sell Over 1 Million Worldwide First Week

Published: Tuesday 7th Mar 2017 by Sam

Ed Sheeran‘s brand of frills-less Pop is proving quite the winner.

The British superstar’s soaring popularity carries him to the cover of Rolling Stone magazine during a week when his third album ‘÷’ is flying off the shelves worldwide.

More below…

Both the UK’s Official Charts Company and Billboard in the US have the guitar carrying crooner on course to open with over 500,000 equivalent units in both regions.

The feat, which is almost guaranteed as this junction, will see the 26-year-old reign as the biggest selling debut of the year thus far. And when looking at the state of sales industry wide, it wouldn’t be surprising if his crown stays in place year-round.

‘÷’ is powered by lead singles ‘Shape Of You’ and ‘Castle On The Hill.’

AMAZING TALENT. BUT I AM WAITING FOR HIM TO CLEAN UP LIKE THE WEEK D. HIS IMAGE DOES NOT MATCH HIS MUSIC. HE ALWAYS LOOKS DIRTY AND SWEATY AND GREASY.

  2. GurlWepa1989 March 7, 2017

    Great talent, well deserved.

    • Jamie March 7, 2017

      Proves so much however…

  4. Lala March 7, 2017

A lot of ppl do 1 mil in a week. Him Adele Taylor and Katy benefit from white privilege so much and their music sounds like music ppl make all the time *rolls eyes…. one day white ppl will be the minority and their going to hate it

    • KELL March 7, 2017

When has Katy sold 1 million in the first week? MOST artists, regardless of color are flopping with the exception of a select few. ?

    • OMG Logic!!! March 7, 2017

You sound so bitter. How does him selling 1 million albums in a week affect you negatively? What do you have against White people?

    • Pat March 8, 2017

@Lala, stfu…How did Justin Timberlakes “Cant stop the feeling” even reach number one?

      • XYZ March 8, 2017

How does that dumb bad and boujee song doing it? It’s not bout color. I mean, sure, if you only count white people (which is only a handful anyway) then it may look like it, but there are blacks doing 1 mil as well. We are talking bout worldwide, not only the US.

  5. Hate in the heart March 7, 2017

Black people ready to talk race talk ..just because a white guy sells a million alb …dam only wating to talk race

  6. Starxavi March 7, 2017

It makes sense for him to be doing a million first week seeing as he has two huge markets (US and UK) that are interested in his music. Plus, he is super talented, great pen game, and he doesn’t over saturate the market. Congrats Ed

    My fave tracks:
    1. New Man
    2. Supermarket Flowers
    3. Perfect

  8. RhiRocks March 7, 2017

No his too big headed for his own good and tbh he’s songs sound pretty much the Same on the new album. This album will sell well cos he’s super busy promoting it everywhere so he better sell well or he’s losing the company a lot of money,
I get why Beyoncé doesn’t want to promote cos she doesn’t want to waste money or give her money to the record label but had Beyoncé promoted like these artist do lemonade would have hit the 5ml mark by now especially since it’s still selling now nearly a year after . Her self titled would have hit tenn mill considering she sold 2.5 in the last three week of xmas in 2013z

    • Orangeyougladididntsaybanana March 7, 2017

      Speculation

    • OMG Logic!!! March 7, 2017

Nonsense. Thighyonce thinks she’s too good to promote and that she’ll sell on name alone. Humble artists like Adele and Ed don’t mind busting their ass to promote their project.

      • ShakaZulu March 7, 2017

STFU U SOUND STUPID! GO SIT IN THE CORNER ??

      • RhiRocks March 8, 2017

But she has sold on her name alone 3mill pure sales coming this year and self titled sold 5mill

    • Pat March 8, 2017

Sorry, but lemonade hasn’t hit the 5mil mark because it’s a corny album!

  9. Theman March 7, 2017

Amazing! Cool cover too.. Ed is dope. Sale those albums. A few of the pop artists actually do..

  10. stan March 7, 2017

good for him, obviously. however, i still can’t get into his music… it sounds so blah to me.

  11. Weezy Tha Goat March 7, 2017

Is it me or has he gotten a little cocky? And I Million worldwide in the opening week isn’t anything to brag about. Sell a Million in the states first Week then we’ll talk.

    • Igotstatellithowiseeit March 7, 2017

Are u serious????? I won’t even do it to you. We are entitled to what we like but don’t down play the accomplishment. A million sold is a million sold! Artist might sell more if they realized there is more fans across the sea to obtain who appreciate variety in music unlike fickle ass fans in “the states”.

  12. Igotstatellithowiseeit March 7, 2017

Also mainstream artist hip hop/r&b artist can learn a thing or two from the alternative r&b artist and mainstream current pop artist. The outfit he is wearing on the magazine cover probably cost $100… we gotta stop wearing our money especially when artist are having a harder time selling records and can’t sell tickets as they would hope. We could fix this s*** but we gotta change the mentality.

  13. Mark111 /.\ March 7, 2017

A lot of artist do 700K to over a million WW in a week. Good for him, he’s huge in the Us and in the UK.

  14. S****** Blonde March 8, 2017

I’m not a fan of this guy, AT ALL, but what does his success has to do with him being white?, like seriously guys, do you really think people buys music based on the artist’s skin color, there are millions of people who loves the type of corny music he makes, always have been, stop it, it’s ridiculous

  15. Pat March 8, 2017

I really feel like there are a few artist out there who’s numbers automatically get inflated for industry and budget purposes. Him, taylor, and adele to name a few in terms of white privilege and I have been saying this for years! You used to can tell when an artist was about to do big numbers and have a great year due to their popularity, likability, and fan base. I mean they were all over the damn place and their names were in everybody’s mouth. Now days, out of nowhere, luke-warm artist somehow manage to avoid luke-warm sales…How? Who in the hell has been talking about Ed Sheeran, and after the clear channeled song “Hello” how often did u hear Adele’s name? Just like they snubbed rihanna to pit Bey against Adele so that Adele’s basic ass could win awards that she did not deserve only to turn around in front of the entire world and say Bey deserved it, smfh!

  16. Beyonnaise March 8, 2017

How people can stan for something as ugly as Ed is beyond me

  17. THE REAL March 8, 2017

Let me break this down for the simpletons once and for all… in my Left Eye voice RIP

Here is how a bland pop act such as Ed Sheeran or even a Taylor, Adele, Katy, Justin B and T, One Direction, et all the like became mega selling pop titans. (Before them, it was Elvis, The Beatles, The Eagles, Elton John et all)

    1. White people control the music industry. Always have, always will.
    2. White people are still a MAJORITY population in places where folks consume and purchase most of the world’s music sales (US, UK, Australia, Canada, et all) with the exception of Asia.
    3. White people are economically and finacially ahead of every other race/nationality. They gross MORE, earn more, and spend more. In nearly Every country on planet earth. Every research poll done in the last 60 to 150 years will back up that statement.
    4. Finally, White people have also consumed and purchased the vast majority of hip hop and rap music,(ala Eminem and Vanilla Ices massive popularity or Nelly and MC Hammer) just based on the sheer weight of their population numbers and purchasing power.

All of these points are included to help bring context to a discussion regarding music sales and/or race and the music industry. Historically, mega selling Black pop stars are generally considered crossover acts, meaning they were able to penetrate the White majority population, thereby competing with some of the highest selling white acts but rarely, if ever, surpassing them (Madonna vs. Janet and Whitney or Beyonce and Rihanna vs Taylor/Adele/Katy). The exception of course is MJ.

The music industry has ALWAYS been set up for white dominance not unlike the society it directly mirrors. I know SOME of you already understand this but I had to give a history lesson for the kids on here. I believe the children are our future.

    • JOHNVIDAL March 8, 2017

Since when is Katy especially more successful than Rihanna?
Beyonce is way more successful than Katy. Are you pucking telling me Rihanna deserves to be more successful than Adele? 🙂
Too many wrongs in your comment.
I understand the issue, but seriously, your examples are not the best.
Whitney became something monumental. Bigger than Madonna at her peak (she runied it for herself though).
Truth is as you say, blacks are 10% of population in the USA I believe. What the hell do you want?

I don´t get the hype about this Ed guy btw. I find the music cool and nothing else. He´s not a Bruno Mars. He won´t be big for that long. It will become old. He´s not a performer and his music is not memorable or that special.

“I believe that children are our future” in my best Whitney Houston voice! lol You are right on that one 🙂

  18. JOHNVIDAL March 8, 2017

LOL ok this means it will be a million counting streams and all. Just like it crossed my mind when I first read the headline for this post.

Seriously, Adele is pretty much the only one doing it with REAL sales. End of story.

  19. John A. March 8, 2017

Congrats to Ed!! The album has some good songs on there but it’s very middle of the road music kind of like Adele.
