Report: Migos Remove Drag Queens From Katy Perry Performance

Published: Tuesday 23rd May 2017 by David

Katy Perry’s PR problems are set to intensify this week after sources close to the ‘Saturday Night Live‘ production camp claimed she pulled drag queens out of one of her performances on the show.

Why?

Because her ‘Bon Appetit‘ collaborators Migos asked her to.

Already under fire for remarks Perry’s fans deemed homophobic, the thriving Hip-Hop group were said to be incensed when they discovered that the Pop singer had invited drag queens to perform the cut alongside them on Saturday night.

One dancer revealed…

I was one of the performers on that table with them the whole time, during the rehearsal for 3 days. On the day of the filming, when I got there, I was told to leave. I wasn’t on the set at the time, but we were asking what happened. They said it was because Migos doesn’t feel comfortable with having drag queens there.

An ‘SNL’ staffer supported this with…

I work at SNL and the rumors are true! Migos held up rehearsal because they ‘weren’t comfortable with the drag queens’ being there. There were initially more drag queens on the set for that song, but after Migos threw a fit, Katy Perry’s team removed some of the queens from the performance. Additionally, Katy Perry didn’t invite any of the queens to the afterparty… So, none of them were allowed in.

Why do you think Migos would have a problem performing with drag queens?

Migos are just going to end their career before it started.

    • LISA LEVINE May 23, 2017

One of the three is a HOMO, just wait and see. Dressed in Fur Hats like Church ladies. They tired.

    • gina May 23, 2017

      lol what career?

  2. Jasmine May 23, 2017

Typical racist media story put out to destroy black men. Katy Perry gets to put transvestites next to supposed straight black men without telling them in advance and then Katy decides to not include the transvestites to her video after party but she gets passes for that because she is white. Obviously, Migos has to take the fall because they are black. How dare a black person have a problem with their brand being put in jeapardy by filming with unexpected people that were NOT cleared beforehand?

    • Mel. May 23, 2017

you mean, homophobic migos? you forget that katy is the star and migos is the supporting act, right? she doesn’t have to clear with them about anything she chooses to do, its her show and her vision. straight black men who are comfortable with being straight shouldnt have an issue with drag queens on set. they werent there for them, they were there for katy…

      • Dev May 23, 2017

Not entirely true. If Migos are preforming live and are an integral part of the show than she has to collaborate with them on what happens, if she was playing a recording than they have no say.
I’m not sure i believe this as there was drag queens and Migos in the preformance and tbh anymore people on that stage and it would’ve been too busy

      • Sam May 23, 2017

Since she is the STAR as you say, and DOES NOT need anyone’s clearance for the show, why is Migos being blamed? Regardless of how they feel SHE makes the final decision. I’m tired of people appropriating culture and then distancing hemselves of it when it’s convenient.

    • Gio88 May 23, 2017

      Are you serious?!

    • RC81 May 23, 2017

What a ridiculous comment – This has NOTHING to do with race – Get a grip!
As Mel said – why should migos have an issue with performing on the same stage as a drag queen? They deserve the abuse they are going to get. It is down right homophobic to throw such demands around and they should be held accountable for their ridiculous views in my opinion.

Again – absolutely nothing what-so-ever to do with race, or the fact that Katy gets a free pass because she is white. Equally, Katy should get some stick here, as she should have refused to remove the drag queens and stuck with her original plans, so in my opinion, they are all as bad as eachother!

This era really isn’t going well for KP and she needs to fix it asap

    • Maleek May 23, 2017

What an absolutely ridiculous comment. Why should straight black men be forewarned
that people (and that is who they are), would be appearing in a music video?
If a straight black man’s sexuality is such a fragile thing that it could be destroyed when placed next to a transvestite, then it should be destroyed. It is frail, it is weak! If you are suggesting that this was the ploy
used by Perry, well good! Your career deserves to be destroyed, because “a white woman” was able to show you up for the transphobic a-hole you truly are. You get no points for your ignorance, and you can cry me a river!

    • Lindsay Pickering May 23, 2017

Maybe KP had a problem with unexpected black men. Have you any idea how rediculous you sound.

    • Denise May 23, 2017

Girl the Migos rap about “f*cking b*tches,” smoking weed, and guns. They have no brand to protect. Since you’re so concerned with the racial dynamic you should ask yourself why Katy agreed to do a song with three black men that made homophobic comments? And on the flipside, why did Migos agree to do a song with someone that allegedly made racist comments? Maybe bigots attract bigots.

    • CHRISTOPHER BERNARD May 23, 2017

you sound like the f****** racist

  3. Islandboi242 May 23, 2017

My thing with Migos is this! You in the music industry where your stylist , talk show host, music video directors and dancers are gay so you should be acustom to being around different facet of people. Be professional and just do your job it’s not your show but guys who carry on like that usually be DL. Katy is wrong for not putting Migos in there place and sticking to her brand and vision so it kind of makes her look bad even though she isn’t homophobic. As a female artist where a mass majority that buys your music are gays you should’ve made a better choice.

    • Dev May 23, 2017

But Migos are on the come up. In a year or a few they might have a change of mind with experience but they are relatively new stars with no edit training and not really mixed with different people outside of reality TV (speculation)
I think with Perry she collaborated with them when they were hot and Donald Glover mentioned them at the Emmy’s and the homophobia hadn’t come out yet. It might be deemed as a bad choice now but at the time when hey were Bad and… it was a good one.

    • Stav May 23, 2017

LOL@Islandboi242 for saying that Katy should have put Migos “in their place and stuck with her vision.” If she had tried that, they would have simply pulled out of the performance and she would have been burdened to perform a song that is only getting attention because of them alone, and nobody would have been feeling it with just her and the drag queens. And if she had been as belligerent as your suggesting she should’ve been, Migos probably would have refused to perform with her again, period, and from there the single would lose its buzz…and the album that she’s trying to sell with it would potentially suffer as a result.

Stop acting like Katy had all the leverage here. She’s been out 10 years and people are tiring of her. The potential of this song (again, thanks to the Migos feature) is about the only bright spot in an era that’s starting off troubled. Not wise to act like a diva and throw around demands now. If your guest isn’t interested in that theme, then do it some other time.

  4. Justafan May 23, 2017

Flop moves for a flopping Perry

  5. MEme May 23, 2017

I can’t believe are mad at migos. Seriously ppl. Performing with a bunch of drags is not conducive to their brand. This doesn’t mean that they hate gays. It simply means it doesn’t work for them. And that’s fair enough. The thing with the LBGT community they need to understand that people is still entitled to have their beliefs. You can’t expect a straight male performer, a rapper at that to just be ok with drags dancing up around them with even being notified prior to the performance. Do you really think future, jay z, drake or any other hip hop act would perform on a stage full of drags? Let’s me honest now. Give me a break:

    • Denise May 23, 2017

So if we’re going by that logic, they chose to do a song with a mainstream, LGBTQ-supporting, white female popstar whose first hit was “I Kissed A Girl,” who had people dancing in many different costumes on her stage many times (like in shark outfits amongst others), received an award by the Human Rights Campaign for her LGBTQ advocacy, attends gay pride parades, and no doubt has gay dancers – as she’s seen a an LGBTQ ally. The Migos say a lot of degrading things about women and gays and supposedly Katy Perry is a self-proclaimed feminist and says she fights against misogyny and homophobia – So really, Katy’s brand isn’t “conducive,” as you put it, to theirs. But nonetheless they decided to work together. We can’t talk about what isn’t “conducive” now that drag queens are introduced, when the Migos clearly aren’t aware of the types of artists they’re collaborating with.

  6. Achooo! May 23, 2017

Migos are from Atlanta the Gay Mecca but anywho people hate what they see in themselves. If they are uncomfortable with different people maybe they should get out of the entertainment business. This is the same uneducated southern dingy schvartse picayune trash that was shock that cities in Africa were civilized and developed and spoke clear English better than them.

  7. XoMoDe May 23, 2017

I’m not at all mad at Migos. If Perry wanted them to perform with her, then she should have cleared the set up with them beforehand and made sure that it was something that they all agreed with. Yeah, she’s the main act here, but lets not pretend that she isn’t using their rising status to sustain hers. They weren’t obligated to participate, and if they had sat it out, then her performance would have been lacking. If someone is there doing YOU a favor, as Migos is her, then you accommodate their wishes. Otherwise, do the song by yourself.

And I’m sorry, but what hip hop act wants to share a stage with drag performers? What hip hop fan wants to see their favorite hip hop act on stage with drag performers? You don’t mix Yo! MTV Raps with Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Doesn’t work. She should have saved that extra b******* for one of her solo performances…

  8. Tori May 23, 2017

All of you who are mad at Migos (and calling them gay) ask yourselves this: if someone asked you to be apart of something that was going to help them more than you and you didn’t want to work with a certain person of their team, would you do it? What the hell did they look like performing with grown ass men dressed up as woman for? They respectfully asked for them not to be apart of the performance. It comes down to Katy’s decision and she chose to accommodate her guest. What’s the problem?

    • I can’t May 23, 2017

I agree. This is the entertainment industry. It is supposed to be SUPERFICIAL. I’d also argue that rappers don’t link themselves to homosexuality for more reasons than just the state of being gay. It’s not just a sexuality. It’s a culture. They don’t appreciate the extra charismatic, boisterous, animated, brightly colored personalities that’s often portrayed. It’s overbearing. They won’t have these same concerns when it comes to Frank Ocean. There’s homophobia for sure, but i’m just saying it’s more than that as well. And Branding matters. If you don’t want your name and image attached to something, especially if it wasn’t cleared with you in advance, then you either respectfully ask for the change or bow out. Katy chose to satisfy her fellow performers. That’s what a collaboration means. Both artists offer their input and Katy can do whatever she wants for her solo performances.

  9. Abel May 23, 2017

    Negroes being homophobics…

Katy Perry…getting tired of you right now.

  10. JDE May 23, 2017

I’m gay and wouldn’t want to share enclosed space with men in drag. I don’t find what they do entertaining, am uncomfortable with it, and am allowed to be. People kill me acting like in order for a [straight] man to prove that he is secure in his sexuality, he HAS to be 100% okay with the most over the top, blatant or abstract gay s*** happening around (or in some cases, to) him. That’s just mental manipulation to brainwash people into not having their own personal boundaries. KP should have sat down with Migos from the start to COLLABORATE on how both sides wanted this performance to go, and if there was anything either of them didn’t want to do, then the other side should have agreed. That’s what collaborations are, an exchange of ideas. Not “you’re doing this because I said so”.

  11. Kmilan23 May 23, 2017

Ok now their just making a big deal out of this homophobia remarks, Migos are not interested in drag queens, why have them shaking their asses on a table in their face?? That doesn’t make them homophobic. Just like us gays wouldn’t sit their and have a female ass and crotch dancing in our faces. Give it a rest !??‍♂️ Just saying

  12. Bianca May 23, 2017

Of course they would have a problem with drag queens dancing around them. They like women lol. Their preference is their preference. When have u ever saw queens dancing on stage with rappers. They’re not gonna lose fans cuz the LGBT is not their target audience anyway if anything they would lose fans for having queens on set. Ppl need understand that not everyone is going to partake with this type of stuff! And everyone has the right to choose who they surround themselves with

  13. Your Mother May 23, 2017

Nothing is going to happen to Migos, cause no one cares about drag queens. Migos has already been in hot water for making negative remarks about gays in the past; it has not effected their cash flow. Move on!

  14. Absolved May 23, 2017

Since when do we pretend that drag performers aren’t niche entertainment that is targeted to a very select audience? Migos had every right to object to this and didn’t need to acquiesce to an extreme concept in order to prove some theoretical point about how “secure” they are in their sexuality/masculinity to an audience that isn’t theirs to begin with. As it is, them doing a song with a pop tart like Katy Perry is going outside of their target demo. You SJW’s have lost your collective minds. Everyone doesn’t have to be ok with everything. Just stop.

  15. Jaquala May 23, 2017

The gay community I see forcing people to take them in. I live for lgbt but comeback on if they are uncomfortable on stage with a bunch of other men dressed as women’s they have that right. They also have a image to keep up. It’s not about being homophobic Katy should have ran that by them beforehand she asked them to perform with her

    • XYZ May 23, 2017

an image to keep up with? They look more like f*** than any drag. Actually they have more balls to show themselves in drag and act as they want to and deal with all that hate they get than these wannabe rappers.

  16. every woman May 23, 2017

Why do I think Migos would have a problem performing with drag queens? Because they are insecure in their own gender, insecure in their own sexuality, and they are lacking the courage to take a socio-political stand for civil rights. In a (tiny) nutshell, it’s because they are small, small men.

  17. SMH May 23, 2017

    Sorry but, who is Migos?

  18. Linear May 23, 2017

Liking the push back. I was expecting to see a bunch of typical crybaby comments about those oh so “awful,” “homophobic,” “insecure,” and probably “DL” Migos. Blah-Blah-Blah…Waa-Waa-Waa. Of course some couldn’t resist playing that tired card, but it’s good that some of these comments pushed back on that mess. Not every viewer finds drag queens entertaining (IMO they’re like clowns and I hate clowns) and not every artist should be expected to be fine with sharing a stage with them.

  19. Boomquisha May 23, 2017

I think white artists should also be allowed to boot black folk off shows because they’re just trouble and not conducive to their core fan base. Black artists taint white artist’s brands. If black hip hop can get a pass, so can white artists. But, we can wear it and drop it however we like and y’all will still be talking about masculinity.

    • I HATE BLACK and WHITE B****** May 23, 2017

white artist always acts black artistS to do features. . And choreographed their dances… I think what you mean is the white artist need to stop stealing from the black music artists

    • Caleb May 23, 2017

You are delusional if you really believe that Black artists taint white artists’ brands. If anything Black artists give white artists the artistic merit they so often lack. Why else do white artists always want Black artists to be featured in their art?

  20. Este May 23, 2017

Maybe it’s okay for a music group not to want to prance around stage with drag queens but the liberal press has to “call them out” for having a different opinion. Where’s the tolerant and liberal media when you need them, smdh.

  21. Jay May 23, 2017

Didn’t ILoveMakonnenn say that they were homophobic as well? I find that funny considering the fact that they’re from ATL and well yeah… everybody there is Gay but carry on Sis

  22. Danyboo May 23, 2017

To me they’re entertainers just like everyone else on that stage. Migos denying there presence is discrimination. The story would change if it was racial. But because it gender bending its deemed as inappropriate. Mf its 2017, cant we all get along without having to care what someone else who don’t even know you thinks about u. These n***** doing a rap n***** doing a song with katy perry it’s bound to be some weird s*** going on. Im sure it was gays in dark horse with juicy j.. N cali girls with snoop. Clearly these n***** uncomfortable with themselves. Don’t be trying to stop these queens check. Its hard asf f*** out here for them.

    • Jasmine May 24, 2017

You do not have to work with people you do not want to work with. That is a human right. There is no human right that says you have to work with gays. The majority of gays are not that desperate anyway to want to work with people that do not want to work with them. Typically, anyone performing on stage has to be cleared first. Why were the drag queens not cleared? That screams SNEAKY and setup to me. If it was 10 random straight men instead of drag queens on the stage that were not cleared by Migos those 10 straight men would have very likely been booted from the stage too. That is just life. Deal with it and stop trying to be a victim.

  23. Your Phantom Edges May 23, 2017

Soooooo…no one’s going to blame Katy Perry? Her and her team of culture vultures chose to drop the lgbt community she loves to capitalize off of of because leeching off of the success of the blacl rap act would be more lucrative. Migos are featured everywhere right now so rather than doing what’s right and being an advocate for LGBT community she joins them in the exclusion of one marginalized group to get more views and ratings off the other. This girl is trash and so are her politics but hey, I guess the Trump era is a glow up for all bigots

  24. #TeamTinashe Stan May 23, 2017

Yall so quick to call out and say someone is homophobic smh.
So annoyed and tired of it. The Migos are right in this case as they didn’t even know before hand. Also, if they personally dont agree with the gay lifestyle than what is the problem? I have yet to see or hear from them promoting hate and violence to the gay community.

So how does that make Migos homophobic because they dont believe in a gay lifestyle? Doesn’t make sense. Plus, this wont hurt their fanbase as their popularity is by Hip Hop/R&B fans that dig their melodies and rap style not Pop.

  25. EnRanc May 23, 2017

I didn’t know that every artist had to be okay with performing with drag queens. Does this smug attitude stretch beyond the entertainers themselves and over to the general public? Am I personally not allowed to not wanna watch a drag show, or is that not permitted either? Meh. Gays are starting to overstep their bounds with this self-righteous attempt to impose certain expectations on everybody else. The sooner you learn that not everyone is required to be your ally, the less annoying all this will be.

    • XYZ May 23, 2017

So if I don’t want to be in the same room with blacks that’s ok? Or are they overstepping their bounds if they think that they are humans, are equal and have the same rights that everyone needs to respect them? mhhh human rights are for….yeah, every human…so STFU

      • EnRanc May 24, 2017

It sure is ok. If you don’t wanna be in the same room with blacks, then walk your b**** ass out when they’re around. You won’t be missed. See how that works? F#ck that corny song you’re trying to sing. It’s not your “human right” to be coddled, placated and given a thumbs-up by the whole world. That’s you being an emotionally fragile little b****. So yeah, when you scream bloody murder because people aren’t willing to be your ally, you ARE overstepping your bounds. I don’t know who told you were entitled to that, but you aren’t.

  26. XYZ May 23, 2017

Actually they can decide with whom they want to perform and who should be on stage. That’s all okay, they don’t need to perform with Drag Queens if they don’t want to. But Katy is the one to blame for that s***. Personally, I will not support acts like Migos and won’t give them any of my money. But Katy’s fanbase are the gays and she acted as if she cared for the community. and now she does what these homo rappers are saying and acts as if she owns them something?. For HER song and HER performance? They have nothing to say and if she would really care, she would have cancelled their performance and would have done that alone. I actually thought of buying her album, but won’t do that anymore… Shame on you, Katy.

  27. Frank May 23, 2017

Migos were probably afraid everyone would see their boners around the drag queens

  28. dyd972 May 24, 2017

First of all, this is katy perry performance, so Migos shouldn’t tell her what to do or not do with her performance. I better understand now why they all were uncomfortable during the performance, it sucks!

  29. Random Stranger Online May 29, 2017

Good for the Migos standing up for their beliefs.

  30. Ganseki January 18, 2024

    Ok…i’m a little late to the game, but Who is the main performer here ? Migos, who in freaking hell is Migos….Never heard of em…Never will. I do know the Diva call Katie, who has all the cloat, and ass kissing entourage ! As well as the power to pull some lying s*** and blame it on others. So how can someone like me, too old to care or know any of these star s****…Know what’s really going down and who should be in the hot seat for using people like paper towels ? { i am sooo trying my best at being nice.}
