Report: 2017 MTV VMAs Deliver Show’s Lowest Ratings Ever

Published: Wednesday 30th Aug 2017 by Rashad

Not even a collection of stage-blazing performances from the likes of Fifth Harmony, Kendrick Lamar, P!nk, and hostess Katy Perry (with help from ‘Swish Swish’ co-star Nicki Minaj) were enough to help this year’s MTV VMAs drum up some respectable viewership figures.  After netting their lowest ratings this century with 2016’s s showing, the hopes were probably a bit higher for this year’s.

Preliminary figures revealed yesterday offered a bleak outlook, one confirmed by today’s final figures that indicate the 2017 edition of the MTV VMAs were their lowest rated in history.

Viewership = 5.68 million

(across 10 networks)

To put that into perspective:

“That’s down from the 6.5 million people who watched the VMAs in 2016, and the 9.8 million who watched the year before, the Nielsen company said. In 2002, back when the show was seen only on MTV, the event drew 11.9 million viewers.”

Going head to head with the season finale of HBO’s wildly popular series, ‘Game of Thrones,’ isn’t solely to blame for this year’s low viewership, but it certainly didn’t help.

    It’s what she deserves. Horrible lineup and none of the girls were there. Beyoncé on maternity, Gaga on tour. Ariana and Rihanna with no album.

    Considering that today’s music industry of “talent” [or lack thereof], I am not surprised. And, MTV wants to bring back TRL…HA!

      Black people will like a good show but they won’t buy an album or help you break records but white people may move on once something is no longer in favor aka the VMAs but once the video hits the web there all over it aka Taylor Swift. Lol

      LOL. Its simply because this year MTV awards has no big names making performances. MTV has had higher viewership than BET seems like forever. One year doesnt make a difference. Plus, what good does it brings if black people are watching the BET yet they dont want to buy their favorite artist record in order to support them? F****** racist people like you should go to hell

    If these awards shows would start being more diverse They will get a mixer of races watching I’m sure no r&b fans were watching They only had 1 rock group performing They need to put together better collaborations also.. The show was full of a bunch of pop girls who can’t measure up to the 1998 era with Britney, Xina, Jlo but trying to be Shout out to Pink though..

  9. Theman August 31, 2017

    They also didn’t promote this show as much..

    An award show of basics! These pop girls are nowhere near the talent of the 2002 pop girls.

    Imma sound like an old person but it’s because none of the artist out today have star power, they are not what Michael, Madonna and Prince were. Those artist were entertaining and you know when you saw them you were going to get a show. Not one of the artist today expect for maybe Bruno Marz has that kind of showman in them not one. These days the generation of artist are lazy and rely on tech and labels to make them good when they should be working hard to be great. MTV also relies on being cool to much and it’s not working. Get some of the older artist there too. Let Madonna, Christina, BSB and other artist performer at the show. MTV has lost their way it use to be about the music and the art but now it’s about crap. They really need to end the VMA’s it’s not what it use to be. MTV doesn’t even play music videos anymore so whats the point?
