From The Vault: Whitney Houston & George Michael – ‘If I Told You That’

Published: Sunday 3rd Sep 2017 by Joe

Today, we salute two of music’s most memorable legends. This week’s From The Vault pick is ‘If I Told You That’ by the eternally electrifying Whitney Houston and George Michael.

Originally a solo song from Houston’s 98 comeback LP ‘My Love Is Your Love,’ ‘That’ was produced by the legendary Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins. For the diva’s 2000 Greatest Hits collection, the track was given a new life when worked into a duet with soul man George Michael. The end result? An all-round vocal masterclass.

[Fun Fact: the jam was originally set to feature fellow music royal… Michael Jackson]

The song was released overseas and was a success for the power pair, peaking at #9 in the U.K – George’s home country.

Kevin Bray was in charge of directing its accompanying video, which saw the two singers living it up in the club before meeting in the middle of the dance-floor for an energized dance-off.

What a beautiful thing it was – and still is – watching two artists at the top of their game sharing the stage in the most complimentary of manners. We wish more “established” acts would follow suit.

It’s still hard to believe that both these musical titans are gone.

And although they have left to the world so many gems and treasures that will stand the test of time, we can’t help but think of all the wonderful music that they could have made in the current musical landscape. Especially with the resurgence of urban music in the mainstream.

Whitney, George, we love you, we miss you and for all time, we thank you.

Whitney legendary on all fronts. Such beauty!
This was a return to music with pop flavor, with Michael and Enrique (yes that ridiculous thing that cannot sing). The Greatest Hits she released for these singles was definitely a hit worldwide.

Haha Enrique is a nice guy though, he’s probably one of the most humble artists out there, alongside Ricky.

      • JOHNVIDAL September 4, 2017

He is humble because he is pshit. He recently gave a “concert” where I live and even his retarded fans (who could support that atrocity?) burnt in anger because of how awful he and the show was. He can´t sing. Like at all. And his trials at generic songs just to stay on radio in summer at pathetic. Worse than pitbull.

He wasn’t always like that, his first albums in Spanish are full of classics, but I agree he cannot sing and isn’t the best performer, they have all become generic, from Ricky, JLo to Shakira, their current music is generic asf, Shakira’s latest single “Me Enamore” gives me headaches, lol, well, at least Ricky, Shakira and JLo are great performers despite not being good singers.

      • JOHNVIDAL September 5, 2017

You said it, the other 3 are good or great performers at least. And definitely can sing something. Enrique cannot sing at all. It´s true there was a time his music could be more bearable at least. The last 10 years just pure and awful crap. Now Shakira has a huge career with true hits and classics of her own. Very different cases. She´s way more respected. Everybody knows Enrique is a joke. But somehow it works for him.

This song should have been a much bigger hit. I love how happy and healthy they both appear in the video
