Final Numbers Are In: Shania Twain & Demi Lovato Leave Miley Cyrus in the Dust

Published: Monday 9th Oct 2017 by Rashad

It’s official:  Miley Cyrus’ new album, ‘Younger Now,’ has delivered one of the worst first week sales figures of any established female pop act this decade.

Unlike Fergie’s abysmal numbers (which can to great degree be attributed to lengthy inactivity and the 10 year time lapse between her two solo projects), Cyrus has been fairly active over her storied career and even managed to see her last studio album, 2013’s ‘Bangerz,’ blast to the top of the Billboard 200 with approximately 270,000 units moved its inaugural week.

For ‘Younger,’ her fifth official era, the pop darling opted to abandon her temporary love affair with Urban pop to embrace her country roots.  And, while the shift appeared promising at its onset as the lead single, ‘Malibu,’ made a splash in the Hot 100’s top 10, that run was short-lived.

Despite an aggressive promo run that saw her hit the talk show circuit and more, the new album found itself lost in the fray of a host of big name releases – namely her fellow pop star Demi Lovato and the return of Country Pop Queen Shania Twain.  The result?  Miley, as forecasted, wound up miles behind the two powerhouses:

First Week Sales:  45,000 SPS (33,000 pure sales)

Chart placement:  #5

First week sales:  74,000 SPS (48,000 – Pure Sales)

Chart placement:  #3

First week sales:  137,000 SPS (134,000 – pure sales)

Chart placement:  #1

*****

No way to spin it boo, this spells badly for Miss Cyrus.  As our friends at Idolator pointed out, while it should be noted the industry as a whole has suffered from lower sales, no other established female pop artist has experienced a sales drop of this magnitude.  This is especially the case from acts still managing to impact the Billboard Hot 100’s top 40.  To put it into context (source):

Recent pop female first-week debuts (streaming included):

  • Adele’s 25 (3.38 million)
  • Beyonce’s Lemonade (653,000)
  • Lady Gaga’s Joanne (201,000)

  • Rihanna Anti (166,000)

  • Lana Del Rey’s Lust For Life (107,000)
  • Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom (106,000)
  • Sia’s This Is Acting (81,000)
  • Demi Lovato’s Tell Me You Love Me (75,000)
  • Solange’s A Seat At The Table (72,000)
  • Fifth Harmony’s self-titled (46,0000)
  • Miley Cyrus’ Younger Now (45,000)
  • Fergie’s Double Dutchess (20,000)
Time period:  2015-2017

Ouch!  Just a week after mentioning “she hates the f*cking charts” (click here to read more about that), it appears the feeling is mutual. Seems ironic that when Cyrus stopped selling Urban music was when she started selling like Urban acts.  Hmm…

Your thoughts?

  2. God October 9, 2017

Mary J. Blige did 80k first week, which is the best selling album released by a black woman in 2017. By the way.

    • yesmaam October 9, 2017

    • Caleb October 10, 2017

Well Mary actually sold way more than that.

  4. Fancy BISH October 9, 2017

  5. Credits October 10, 2017

Miley’s not struggle twerking on MTV anymore. That’s why! Stupid sh*t like that helped her sell before.

  6. S****** Blonde October 10, 2017

I think she saw this coming, she been experimenting with her music a lot, so I think she knew this was going to happen, I mean, after “Bangerz” she literally became an anti-pop Star by releasing music that didn’t catered to pop music fans. In my opinion her numbers aren’t even that bad, those are soon to become the norm for music sales, there will be a time when it will be a milestone to sell 50k first week.

  7. ka October 10, 2017

I think it shows they may be older but fans stick the test of time.

  8. 2bad2bme October 10, 2017

Whelp, another hits the dust *Joseline voice

  9. Meme October 10, 2017

Music needs new female pop star, point blank period. I’m tried of all these over exposed hoez and clearly the general public feels the same. Notice the males who doing good numbers and hitting #1 are young fresh talent.

    • The Wig Snatcher October 10, 2017

      Agreed

    • S****** Blonde October 10, 2017

I disagree, if anything the gp is tired of pop girls, there are too many of them.

  10. Memo October 10, 2017

Y’all acting as if Demi is not a flop. She’s never seen any success. She doesn’t have a number one song or a Platinum-certified album.

Stop reaching with titles like ”… and Demi Lovato leave Miley in the dust.”

  11. Dreazy Baby October 10, 2017

Does this really matter? THey all outvoted out good projects

  12. JOHNVIDAL October 10, 2017

Funnily enough it is now when I´m starting to like Milye Cyrus lol
I sgree with another comment saying Demi has never seen success to begin wth so she´s not letting anyone in the dust. The difference was very small.

Good for Shania. If they had asked me a couple of years ago I would have said she was going to so way more. I mean if she has fans, they have been waiting for more than a decade. And she used to be one huge seller thanks to country folks. But seeing how this cannot stop declining… this is the best she could have done. It´s almost impossible to do more than 100k except for 5 to 10 artists a year. End of.

  13. truthteller October 10, 2017

Crikey even Fifth Harmony posted better first week sales than Miley. She really has fallen off

  14. Theman October 10, 2017

If Shania had a huge hit she would have done even greater. She took one of the longest breaks in music & still got a number one album! So she still did great.. Demi’s sales are pretty decent..

“Just a week after mentioning “she hates the f*cking charts”, it appears the feeling is mutual.”
