P!nk On Ageism In Music: ‘Radio Doesn’t Play Girls Over 35…Unless You’re Beyonce’

Singer also slams Dr. Luke, Talks "Haters", and more

Despite dropping jaws with aerial acrobatics and stunts at many of her live showings for the last 7 years, P!nk has had enough of those who’ve complained about her “same old” aerial stunts in her high octane stage shows lately.

Taking to the New York Times to sound off, the pop performer proclaimed:

“How many times do you see the same artist get up and lip-sync and dance?” she countered. “And you’re mad at me for doing something none of them can do? And I sing live!”

Those detractors are certainly not the only ones who’ll take umbrage with the beauty’s bluntness.  When quizzed on Kesha and her lengthy legal battle with producer Dr. Luke, P!nk (who teamed with him to helm her hits 2000’s hits ‘U+Ur Hand’ and ‘Who Knew’) minced absolutely no words with her answer.  Referring to him as “not a good person,” she went on to tell the newspaper the backlash from his public fallout with Kesha was “his karma.”

Talk about ouch!  See what else she said inside:

Via New York Times:

“I don’t know what happened,” she said of Kesha’s much-publicized claims that Dr. Luke was sexually and verbally abusive. “But I know that regardless of whether or not Dr. Luke did that, this is his karma and he earned it because he’s not a good person.”

“I have told him that to his face and I do not work with him,” she added. “He doesn’t do good business, he’s not a kind person, he doesn’t do the right thing when given ample opportunities to do so, and I don’t really feel that bad for him.”

The singer, now 38, reflected on her storied career and addressed the uphill battle for aging pop stars.

“I had the whole sit-down, you know: ‘Just be prepared, they don’t play girls over 35 on Top 40 radio,’” the singer said. “There are exceptions, but they’re songs, not artists — unless you’re Beyoncé.”

If the top 30 success of ‘What About Us’ – the first single from her new album, ‘Beautiful Trauma,’ is anything to judge by, P!nk will be just fine!

I agree they’re barely playing much pop or R&B either, so many rap songs ANNOYING ME!!

    • Bam October 6, 2017

The decline of rap (and it will come) will be a good day indeed.

Also to be fair Beyoncé doesn’t even get much mainstream play any more. Pink however still gets spins at least her in the south west she does.

    We been knew….

  3. Keegan October 6, 2017

Pink is my b**** she always keeps it 100 and I make sure to do the same #inspiration

  4. Boss October 6, 2017

She can keep it 100 but dont get it twisted beyonce has been hustling 20 years plus. Pink and Brittany both had their time its beys turn now and shes here to stay. I understand what pinks saying but when you work hard it pays off.
She gotta be careful tho this is giving me a little bit of shade.

    • Dontazz October 6, 2017

I honestly don’t see it as Shade ! She is correct honestly .. Hell BEYONCE doesn’t even get played at pop radio stations like she used to! Which is sad! Pink works hard as well she’s had NO flop albums or tours period! Ageism is real – always has been.

      • Bam October 6, 2017

Ageism is something these 20-something year old stars need to get wise and speak up on cause it will eventually effect them if they’re lucky enough to make it past 30.

    • Mark111 October 6, 2017

All three came out around the same time, so what are you talking about? Beyonce just have a direct connection with her fans that understand her random releases. But her songs don’t do well on the charts anymore. Now can Pink still sell without a top hit, we’ll see. I’m sure she will.

  5. Music lover October 6, 2017

Even Beyonce has a tough time being played on Top 40 believe me honey but I agree with everything else.
What about us was everything and I still dont understand how it didnt perform so well in the USA.

  6. Mark111 October 6, 2017

Because by 40 you should be making adult aimed music. I know when I was a t***, I wouldn’t pay most older acts any mind other than Mike and Janet and even they’re music stopped catering to me in the 2000s. The youth is gonna buy and play singers their age because they’re more relatable . Now that I’m older, I go back to play older music, because I’m older and relates to it a lot more.

Pink just had a hit last year, she’ll be fine. The irony is, I haven’t heard not one Beyonce song on pop radio since I Am.

  7. S****** Blonde October 6, 2017

Radio stations play Beyoncé ? I thought her music was only played in gay clubs, where fat ratchet gays wear heels and know every choreography of her.

    • WhiteNigga101 October 6, 2017

      Unashamed hater! Lol

    • Jasmine October 6, 2017

      Stop hating on black women racist f a g g o t.

      • Chris October 6, 2017

Nothing she said was racist. If anything it was a compliment.

      • Jennifer Johnson October 6, 2017

Why does everything have to be about race?? She never even said anything like that!!! Get over it

  8. JOHNVIDAL October 6, 2017

Hmm… radio plays Beyonce???? If there were people who radio still played despite being 35 or more that was Mariah Carey and especially Madonna. And Tina and Cher with their late hits decades ago.
Pink is not doing so well this go round it seems. There´s only so much average and safe stuff you can get away with. She´ll do great in tours anyway. It seems her time to become only a touring force is approaching.

    • Bam October 6, 2017

      JLo gets play too.

    • RoyalKev October 6, 2017

Radio played all the top divas in their 30’s back in the day, up until this last decade! That’s definitely a thing of the past all of a sudden now! I think things are more deliberate within this decade! The promotion of artists and the charts seems to be more controlled. Most iconic artists from earlier decades didn’t suffer the way artists do today!

      • Teflon Boy October 6, 2017

Radio plays artist’s music regardless of age, Mariah, Madonna etc. what they don’t do is play those artist’s new music. You hear Madonna on the radio all the time but it’s always her classic hits and rarely her new stuff. Same with Mariah, they’ll play Dreamlover but won’t go near the new stuff. Beyoncé, they’ll play Single Ladies til the end of time but probably aren’t playing much of her new stuff. If anything P!nk is one of the few older acts who is still largely played however, I think that is more due to the heavy rock influence in her music.

  9. Bam October 6, 2017

Oh and I fully agree with her statement on her ariel stunts. It’s never the same old cause she switches the routines up for every song she does it with. That’s like complaining that Beyoncé is dancing again.
People hate on Pinks ariel acrobats because they know she has something that their fave couldn’t do even if they trained a year.

    • Jasmine October 6, 2017

Sorry I disagree. I think Pink was only talking about her fans hating and not people in general like you said. I may have seen her do it at a couple award show performances but I like many other non-fans have never been to a Pink concert. Only fans go to concert after concert and would have the ability to be a critic on her alleged acrobat routine repetition.

      • Bam October 7, 2017

No it’s not her fans hating cause her fans get that each routine is different. One look at twitter during an awards show with pink will show you that it’s non-fans that always hate on her acrobats most before she even gets on stage.

  10. RoyalKev October 6, 2017

Pink sure tends to think about other artists often! I remember when she couldn’t stop referring to Britney and Christina back in the day and neither of those ladies would mention her! As for this Beyonce thing, Pink get way more privileges than Bey does this decade (radio wise)! I hardly ever hear Beyonce on the radio! People know damn well that radio doesn’t make or break Beyonce and anything Bey earns is right off the back of her willingness to think outside the box and keep the public interested in all her artistic endeavors! Don’t confuse that with favoritism!

    • Angel October 6, 2017

      Sng

    • fatusankoh October 6, 2017

Royal kev well said thanks let keep supporting our Bey for life Pink was wrong for saying that

    • Jasmine October 6, 2017

I agree 100%. Pink is a hater. Pink thinks that because she is white she automatically deserves to be on the radio and that Beyonce is somehow not worthy of airplay. What Pink fails to get is that Beyonce still looks and acts young. Pink looks like she is an older artist with that hard looking man-face and body. When I read Pink was only 38 I was surprise because she looks a good 46 to 48.

  11. Meme October 6, 2017

Lmfao girl radio don’t play her either Pink.

    • SillyWabbit October 6, 2017

I said the same thing! ?

  12. Fancy BISH October 6, 2017

Love P!nk, but those pictures above are a hot funky mess hunnie lol ?

  13. Meteorite October 6, 2017

As far as talent goes the bar has been gradually lowed throughout the years and it’s why anyone can do the bare minimum and can be a pop star now a days. The rubric has changed drastically. Talent, passion and creativity are gone. It’s just all about the glamour.

  14. SMH October 6, 2017

The irony is that beyonce doesn’t get radio play either lol.

    • Music lover October 6, 2017

Come to think about it,Pink stuff get more radio play than Beyonce’s.

  15. pat October 6, 2017

janet was still breaking radio airplay records at 36. honestly she was pop radio’s darling up until the superbowl, but i get her point.
i think it has more to do with the type of music that’s popular…..beyonce is the only one of age so far who’s managed to grab on to the trap trend and not look corny…and now as an over 35 mother of 3…it’ll be interesitng to see how new music from her plays out on even urban stations

    • RoyalKev October 6, 2017

Janet made hits in her sleep before SB took it’s toll on her career! Bey will be fine, she’s not slowing down anytime soon (with or without radio).

    • Keith October 9, 2017

The next phase of Beyonce’s musical career IS going to be interesting.

  16. Your Name October 6, 2017

Don’t get me wrong, Pink is majorly talented but pretty much all of her music sounds the same and follows the same formula. I get it; if it’s broke don’t fix it but chile….
I’m certain that Pink would get airplay if her new stuff wasn’t so corny and samey. Beyonce barely gets airplay these days herself, but at least she stays ten steps ahead of her competition and appeals to ALL age groups. You have to grow with your fans, but still remain current.

  17. Jennifer Johnson October 6, 2017

Pink is the best with her music, singing, acrobatics , and most importantly being a mom, and being REAL.

  18. Keith October 6, 2017

Not totally true cause Top 40 did not play any of the songs from Lemonade !

  19. Diane Jerdon October 7, 2017

That’s it in a nutshell straight ip n to the point. I love you Pink you are an amazing woman mom n performer. ??All these years n still the Haters are still hating. Your timeless , ageless n always amazing in concert. That’s why we love you
