Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 1996 #TBT

Aaliyah's 'If Your Girl Only Knew' Hits Its Hot 100 Peak
Published: Thursday 19th Oct 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week, boys and girls, we’re pulling up ‘If Your Girl Only Knew’ – the first single from late R&B beauty Aaliyah‘s sophomore album, ‘One in a Million.’

Written by then up-and-coming producers Missy Elliott and Timbaland, the tune – released in 1996 – was an out of the box success and catapulted the 17-year-old singer to her third top 20 hit.  This week 21 years ago, ‘Girl’ was lifted to the #11 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 (where it peaked).  Helping hoist its parent album, ‘Million,’ to triple platinum status, the song remains a favorite amongst the Grammy nominated singer’s fans.

Let me tell ya’ll…If Your Girl Only Knew is one of the dopest first singles in the history of music, point blank period…Now, something else ya’ll need to know…Change The World ? by Eric Clapton is one of my all time favorites…and it won the Grammy for Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year too…Twisted by Keith Sweat sounds as fresh as the day it came out…Athena Cage slayed those vocals like the rent was due AND she needed money for a perm! She sounds the closest to Beyoncé in vocal runs and tones that I’ve ever heard…ok, that’s all ya’ll need to know for now lol ?

Yes yes yes “Change the world” by Eric is another stand out on that chart.

I’m surprised that someone on TGJ knows Clapton’s music, all the good old commentators have disappeared, only few of us remain, like John, even if he doesn’t like GOD Eminem, he still get a past for his knowledge in music.

I can´t stand Eminem LOL Sorry.

An era! Look at all those amazing songs on that chart. I love Aaliyah so much. This song is one of my favorites. Aaliyah, Missy and Timbaland had a really good organic chemistry that you can hear through the music. Everyone should also check out her final, self-titled album. It’s a masterpiece.

I adore “If it makes you happy” by Sheryl Crow. And obviously the titan that is Celine in “It´s all coming back to me now”. Where the hell is this quality of music and diversity now?

Aaliyah was stunningly beautiful, I still remember when I met her on TRL, she had that spark in her that you just can’t describe with words. But LOL at the Macarena ? lmao, those were the days, I’m the only one that loved No Mercy’s Where Do You Go”?, there was even a Spanish version (Macarena’s Impact) ?

    • Fancy BISH October 19, 2017

You are so lucky you got to meet her!

First Aaliyah video I seen and was a fan ever since.

  8. eric October 19, 2017

The difference between then and now is sad and alarming. I saw Janet on tour this week and I was crazy happy to hear Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat” remixed with “That’s the Way Love Goes”. Aaliyah’s music will endure forever and ever.
