2018 ‘Rock & Roll’ Hall of Fame Nods: Janet, Whitney, Mariah, Tina, & Sade Snubbed Again

Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, and Celine Dion Among History-Making Females With No Induction
Published: Friday 6th Oct 2017 by Rashad

It’s that time of year again, kids!  Yep, the time when fan groups of many legendary acts are collectively pissed off from learning their faves were omitted from the list of nominees for the ‘Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.’

Despite amassing unrivaled sales, accolades, Billboard stats, impact, and industry recognition in their respective rights, a group of highly deserving individuals always find themselves absent from the round of potential inductees.

Curious to know what diva syndicate is missing from the “class of 2018” set?  You guessed it, the usuals:  pop icons Janet Jackson, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey.  That’s not all:

First, congratulations are in order this year’s list of nominees who include Sister Rosetta Tharpe, civil rights activist/singer Nina Simone, hip hop pioneer LL Cool J, and Rufus featuring Chaka Khan (the group, not the diva as a solo act).  They join 16 other acts up for consideration for this year’s ceremony.  Click here to cast your fan vote until December 5th.

*****

The victory for Nina and Chaka (technically) is notable, but small considering the ongoing cry for more female representation in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – especially women of color.  As noted in our 2014 post on this same subject matter (click here to read that), acts like Queen of Rock N’ Roll Tina Turner (eligible since 1999), Janet Jackson (eligible since 2007),  the band Sade (eligible since 2009) Whitney Houston (eligible since 2010), Celine Dion (eligible since 2015), and Mariah Carey (eligible since 2015) have all been passed over for acts that had significantly less impact on the industry.  This, not even taking into account their respective sales. Ay yi yi!

(breathe Rashad…just breathe).  Ok, I’m off my soap box.

P.S.  Did you know legendary female singers Barbra Streisand, Ella Fitzgerald, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Cher, and Bette Midler have never been inducted?

Your thoughts?

The panel is made up of haters…. so you’re telling me that Tina Turner still hasn’t been inducted? in 2017? The biggest & baddest b*tch in the game? Who drew up the blueprint & wrote the rules & influenced icons like Britney Spears Beyonce P!nk & many more…… That is one shady-ass panel of haters Lol

Barbara and Tina haven’t been inducted!!!! THE SHADE OF IT ALL!!!!

    • Luise October 6, 2017

Tina was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame as part of Ike and Tina Turner in 1991.

      • now_you know October 11, 2017

        that’s not solo

  2. JOHNVIDAL October 6, 2017

I don´t know. I find it absurd to complain about this all the pucking years. There´s only so many names one can induct every year I guess. Don´t you want Chaka or Nina Simone to be there? Then shup up. There´s a certain type of artists these types of circuits prefer though. And that ain´t no Celine Dion (and her extraordinary voice). Get over it. Tina Turner will come no doubt. Chill.

    • king z October 6, 2017

but even in there being “only so many names” that can be inducted per year, you don’t think from 2007-2017 janet jackson shouldn’t have been among those names? Yes, she was nominated, but never included.

Next, tina turner and barbra streisand? both eligible since God knows when? it’s not about validation, it’s about recognition.

don’t tell me NWA are groundbreaking acts and deserve to be in, but neglect ppl like whitney and janet

      • RoyalKev October 6, 2017

Preach King Z! I don’t personally stress over this because it’s utterly ridiculous, but I see it as a slap in the face! It’s insulting!

all been passed over for acts that had significantly less impact on the industry. This, not even taking into account their respective sales.
Depends on how we measure “impact”, there’s no doubt that that these ladies have great impact in music as popular singers but many of the acts who have been favored over them are far more influential and have contributed more to MUSIC than any of these ladies, they might not be known to many but their impact on other great musicians is enough to respect them and give them the special treatment, while all these ladies enjoy popularity, commercial success and acclaim, they’re contribution to MUSIC is little when compared to those “acts that had less significantly impact on the industry”, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame tends to focus on artists who are real musicians, not that these ladies aren’t but again, when compared to them, they fall short in comparison, anyway, it’s not that important, these ladies don’t need “validation”, this won’t make them bigger or more respected.

With all due respect to the commenter above me, you cannot tell me you believe that janet, mariah, whitney, and tina – all artists who inspire almost every female singer out today – don’t have comparable “impact” to some of the lesser known rock acts that are inducted.

look at bon jovi, look at ll cool j, hell look at nwa. im not sure if tgj is making it a race thing, i disagree there. but it does appear to be a lack of regard for females

if barbra streisand aint in either? come on

      • Taqui October 6, 2017

The original poster is 100% correct they tend to weed out a lot of talent based on their musicianship…. Nina is a piano legend and Chaka plays percussion including Drums in the era when no Female was….

But as in all HOF you need to spread out your marque names… They don’t need to be all honored at once…. Its actual “Rock N Roll” certified Legends waiting too… Just part of producing for longevity….

    • Subliminal October 6, 2017

You’re just giving this kumbaya speech because Madonna is in there. In fact, she was inducted the first year she was eligible although she is far from a musician and does not write as much of her music as Mariah and Janet. The Rock Hall Of Fame is a joke and the only reason Madonna was inducted is because she knows someone(s) on the panel who got her in. It about who you know. No way is Madonna more deserving than Tina Turner who is the Queen Of Rock. I’m not here for it.

      • Keith October 6, 2017

        THE TRUTH, Ruth!!!!

  4. NT October 6, 2017

Tina Turner deserves to be there after all she has been referred to as the “ Queen of Rock and Roll” ; Celine, Mariah and Whitney all though amazing acts with great talent aren’t for this particular circuit. Janet on the other hand I feel will probably get her induction in the next few years but there’s still so many other people they can pull from instead of who we deem deserving

  5. RoyalKev October 6, 2017

It’s criminal! it’s not difficult to grasp that the entire “legend’s panel” need to be inducted! WTF! Each and everyone deserve it before the basics!

    Tina Turner
    Whitney Houston
    Janet Jackson
    Barbra Streisand
    Celine Dion
    Mariah Carey
    Sade
    Cher
    Dolly Parton

Who ran the world during within those decades? These slayful b****** did!
    … Get them in!

  6. Truth October 6, 2017

Tina deserves to be inducted, that much I’ll say. The rest, not so much.

  7. Meme October 6, 2017

I can see why certain artist aren’t up there. But there is no excuses why Barbara, Tina and Janet isn’t. My mouth dropped. Especially Barbara.

  8. Meteorite October 6, 2017

Why is this surprising to anyone?

  9. Tru Voice October 6, 2017

Sexiest. Only white old rockers get in with no problem.

  10. ? October 6, 2017

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame isn’t that old. They tend to nominate innovative artist who were pioneers.
I hate to break it to you guys but a lot of the people nominated pioneered things in their art or genre in some way. The music industry is old, we’ve had singing divas since the beginning. Rosetta Tharpe literally is the mother of rock and roll. Where would Tina be without her?Rosetta Tharpe inspired your legends. Nina Simone is self explanatory. Know your music history and you’d be ok with the list.

    • Leo October 6, 2017

But you just proved everyone’s point. If you consider Rosetta Tharpe the Mother of Rock and Roll and Nina Simone a legend that needs no introduction, then why are they just now getting their FIRST nominations? The problem is that these actual pioneers are just now getting nominated as opposed to artists like Madonna who were inducted in their first eligible year. This is very problematic and makes it even worst for modern day legends and pioneers like Tina, Whitney, and Janet to ever get inducted. And anyone who truly knows their music history knows that the music industry has been problematic since Elvis “Christopher Columbus”-ed his way into Rock and Roll, but that’s another story for another day.

      • LaJo October 7, 2017

You hit the nail on the head.
Rosetta Tharpe has been eligible for over 55 year so & rightly said the pioneer of the genre this hall of fame is named after.

        ITs an injustice.

Hope all the snubbed artists get their induction sooner rather than later.

  11. Yonce October 6, 2017

These is a Shane! These women set the blueprint for what you see female artist doing now.

    • Fancy BISH October 6, 2017

      I agree, it’s past a shame hunnie…it’s a damn SHANE lol…yaaaaaaaaas

  12. DanYiel Iman October 6, 2017

I can’t believe Whitney Houston isn’t an award winning act!! RIH??

    • Jules October 7, 2017

Right? But they included Madonna, no shade but shade. Whitney had that voice as greatest and bigger as Aretha.

  13. Luise October 6, 2017

Yall should mention that Tina was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Ike Turner in 1991.

    • Kris October 6, 2017

They should also mention that it’s more colored women thaninductees than white women.
