Solange: ‘I Miss Out On Opportunities Due To Desire To Control My Body’

Published: Thursday 19th Oct 2017 by Sam

Solange has hit a career stride thanks to her unbridled artistry and fearless igniting of necessary conversation.

But while celebrated for these traits, she’s revealed in a new interview that blazing that trail has come at a cost. Literally.

Details below…

Speaking with Evening Standard magazine, which she covers in fashion, the 31-year-old said:

“To be honest, owning my body this year was really important to me.

That can mean a lot of things. That can be in physical form — wanting to have control over my physical body — and also wanting to have control in the way it is presented to the world.

And it isn’t always easy. I often lose opportunities based on my will to want to navigate through that ownership of my body in the most authentic way.

And I really kind of attained a lot of that from my mother.”

In an industry where so many acts – new and established – are doing any and everything to get by (at expense of their credibility), it’s awesome to see Solange finally getting her dues for marching to the beat of her own drum.

It took a minute to “click” with the masses. But it did and should serve as an inspiring narrative to many an artist trying to find their footing.

Your thoughts?

Yaaas! And for those who pay attention to detail…she’s sitting in a Marcel Breuer Cesca Chair with Arms ($1,533)

      • Jasmine October 19, 2017

@Fancy BISH Girl stop being so materialistic. $1500 for a chair is not that expensive if it is the real thing (the identical no-name versions go for $200 a pop). Buy a NICE dining room set and you will how cheap a little 1500 chair really is at the end of the day.

Jasmine, are you ok? LOL, please explain to me what the HELL you were trying to do with this comment…what does Solange sitting in a classic chair have to do with ME AT ALL? I point people into the RIGHT direction! Yes, I’m talking about the REAL version of the chair, the DETAILS (like I said)…the one she’s actually sitting her asss on lol…the one that’s in the MOMA…AND? Your comment about me being materialistic is just DUMB..I posted because I saw the chair, point blank period…THEN you’re going to come out your face and say it’s not alot of money…THEN say buy a NICE dining room set and then you’ll see how cheap LMAO…WTF? You could’ve added to the conversation and talked about modern furniture (if you know anything about it), but you chose not to! Instead, you linked people to the WRONG direction lol…ladies and gentleman, grown ups of THE WORLD…please go to Knoll.com…bye Jazz lol

While I applaud Solange for showing signs of maturity I cannot overlook the heavily rumored issues she has with skin color and fake hipster persona she obtained from her new husband, Alan Ferguson (are they even still married?) I like some of her songs but I do not think the public really knows who she is and the media will always look at her as superstar Bey’s sister.

Solange to me is a master mind. Solange didnt start like this. She wanted a career and she couldn’t have one like her sisters so she changed up. Everything is calculated upon where she gets the attention as well as the accolade for being different and real. She won because she now stands out from her sister. More power to her and you can’t disrespect her but you do see. This is the only artist I have ever commented on this in this .manner. There was no real or vivid inspiration rather a change from hair to music to stand out. She needs to speak clearly.

All artists are “calculated” in some manner in order to stand out among their peers. Hell…from a greater perspective, capitalism and trade dictates that the world be competitive as a general rule. So, I agree with you here, but I don’t think it’s unique to Solo (I know you didn’t say that) or even a bad thing to “calculate” yourself a niche that you feel represents you best and that you’re wiling to standby.

I agree with you that Solange probably intentionally went the opposite route, so to speak, of her sister’s to appear a certain way and receive a certain kind of praise. However, I think that is the name of the game. It’s probably why Beyonce, who claims to be a terrible cook, is a terrible cook–because cooking and food is Kelly’s thing. And it’s also probably why Beyonce (like Darlene Love, Tina Turner, Etta James, etc.) went blonde. It set her apart from all the other 90s /00s R&B divas and her group mates.

And don’t even get me started on MJ vs. Prince and how they calculated their careers and images to the teeth. MJ–to be think undisputed king of cool and the other, as a result, to indirectly chide his rival’s in-your-face approach to music and super stardom. And remember how much Prince seemed to enjoy pushing the boundaries of sexual explicitness until it became more mainstream in the mid-90s with artists like Madonna and Janet and he “all of a sudden” found it less than tasteful?

Carving out niches and being “calculated” with an added touch of mystique is actually what makes and made our greatest entertainers so fascinating and compelling.

Forgive the big words. It’s how I talk in person, too.

      • navybound October 19, 2017

I understand where you are coming from. If that is the game, I will take it, but I would want for her to objectify it as that. Other than that, as an artist, I am confused with her work.

Her CD is an underrated WORK OF ART

  5. G7Pat October 19, 2017

    Her sis don’t mind tho

    • My2Cents October 19, 2017

Right!!! I’m baffled by her saying she learned to control her image from her mother. Is Tina telling Solange & Bey two different things? Bey is basically naked all of the time So is Solange saying Bey is nearly naked due to industry pressures or to secure a job?

I’m going to take this further, does anyone remember the interview where Bey stated that she admired and wanted Solange’s confidence? And do y’all remember the Essence interview that Solange did where she said she’s not as strong as Bey because Bey has to do so much more in the industry because many people are depending on Bey? and do y’all remember Tina stating on the View or behind the scenes of Video Phone that a parent can teach a kid the right way, but when they get older the kids will rebell?

It’s time for these sisters Bey & Solange to get together and have a soul stirring sisterhood talk. Also get mamma Tina in the room. They need to all get on the same page. Yes, they are individuals with individual styles/sounds but they both need to learn something from each other to improve their lives. Their seems to be a conflict somewhere. Possibly a resentment. Bey needs all the family support a woman can get because she has 3 small kids, a so called reformed cheating husband, and demanding lifestyle. These Sisters gotta get into formation to teach the next generation; prevent that generation from suffering /continuing in a bad emotional cycle. Money can’t by mental health, just ask Michelle.

You sound so d a m n stupid. Maybe Beyonce being in control of her body is dressing how tf she wants to. Then you have the nerve to say what they should have a sister to sister talk. You imbecile! Do you know what happens in their family behind closed doors?? My goodness people are dense

      • DanYiel Iman October 19, 2017

Tenitra suffered from depression since back in the day before being Monica’s background vocalist so stop the foolishness!!??‍♂️

  6. Sia October 19, 2017

She’s very fortunate to be in a position to be exactly who she wants to be and still be financially viable. Not everybody can swing it…just on the financial level. Being beys sis does help, get mad at that all u want.

    • Kendrick Slaymar October 19, 2017

And that’s what makes it more laughable as she started as a pop singer flopped and played the “I am woke” card.

      • Irma October 19, 2017

She never started as a pop singer she did retro 60’s type music. Get it right. Soul-Angel ain’t never had to do pop.

      • Electrikblue October 19, 2017

You’re just as dumb as your screen name Kendrick. Maybe if you would’ve paid attention to Solange around 2009/2010 she’s been “woke” hell Erykah Badu is one of her best friends and mentors

  7. Kendrick Slaymar October 19, 2017

She comes from a place of privilege. Many other artists “sell out” because they need a check. Many artists and creatives are not able to just be because the reality is that bills need to get paid but it is what it is. That’s why I just laughed at the post. She’s a pick me. Always looking for attention/validation with these stupid humble brags. Shadow dwelling ass.

  8. Kendrick Slaymar October 19, 2017

She can afford to be the opposite of her sis. Her sister made it possible for her to be herself….if she didn’t have ‘fame by association’, you better believe she’d have to compromise herself to have any kind of platform. She ain’t that talented for her to just ‘be herself’ and have success. She isn’t all that live, sorry. Her profile literally rose with Bey’s off the strength of being her sister.

    • Electrikblue October 19, 2017

Solange has since said she has her own money from writing songs for Beyonce and performing with destinys child. Her last album True was also successful just took this new album for many more people to become fans. She wrote and produced on her entire new album there’s so many behind the scenes footage of her coming up with harmonies and how she wants the instrumental notes mixed smh always a hating a s s person who don’t know s h i t and probably has nothing to show for themselves.

  9. Stormy October 19, 2017

I think she comes across as insincere because she didn’t have any problems being s***, bubbly, popular in her acting days. There is nothing wrong with having certain things in common with her sister. There is no need for this desperation to be the anti-Beyonce, especially considering how successful her sister is.

I know she has grown up and changed but it’s almost like she wants to erase the past and pretend it never happened. Now she’s this complex, “deep”, layered individual whose misunderstood. I guess…

    • Electrikblue October 19, 2017

Oh my god you can tell the people that haven’t followed Solange since she was young. The girl posts pics and talks about the different stages of her life. Y’all act like she’s in her 60’s she’s only 31 y’all met her when she was a t*** and mad that she has found her niche? Gtfoh. How is she anti-Beyoncé? They constantly praise each other.

      • Teflon Boy October 20, 2017

‘Anti’ in this useage is short for ‘antithesis’ i.e. The opposite of..,

  10. Tim Brown October 19, 2017

Yoo thank to you to everyone that had a mature and informative comment under here!!

If you can read, I don’t think Electrikblue is notable.
