August Alsina: “My Label Is Trash / Tell Them To Free Me”

Published: Tuesday 14th Nov 2017 by Sam

August Alsina has never been afraid of sharing his struggles. As such, it was only a matter of time before he vented about his career dramas.

A few years ago, the R&B singer was on an upward incline thanks to hits such as ‘I Luv This’ and debut album ‘Testimony.’

However, his momentum muted when sophomore offering ‘This Thing Called Life’ didn’t match the success of his first LP. And despite staying active on the touring circuit, he’s been pretty quiet ever since. Sans publicly declaring his health issues.

Now though, he’s turning up the volume on the situation surrounding his third project – and it’s not a good.

See what we mean below…

Taking to Twitter tonight, he wrote:

Yikes!

His frustrations are somewhat understandable – as far as being an artist itching to release new music.

That said, context is crucial.

Def Jam just signed Eminem’s manager Paul Rosenberg as its new CEO – a role which doesn’t come into effect until the start of next year. Hence Alsina’s mentions of operations essentially being on hold.

Viewed this way, it could be argued that this vent-ation would have been better placed early next year in the event that his predicament didn’t change. Now he runs risk of riling those who – at least for now – have his career in their hands.

Needless to say, it’ll be interesting to see whether all resolves itself or whether he’s granted his freedom. And if the latter, what comes of “August Alsina” thereafter.

I don’t get why labels hold artist they don’t seem to support especially when they’re trying to make moves while they are ?….

Does he not know that the music industry freezes every 4th quarter?? Noone gets to drop new music during 4th quarter! Whats wrong with him and CB bruv? CB thinking he’s supposed to have a diamond plaque for selling individual singles….OAN AA—it doesn’t help that everything released after his 1st album has failed to gain traction….ijs ??‍♀️

The 4th quarter is the biggest quarter for the music industry. November and December are typically the two biggest months of the year for the industry which is why so many artists release their albums during the 4th quarter.

That’s not true…I’ve worked with songwriters—they don’t even submit material during 4th quarter…yes music is released 3rd quarter. You may be referring to holiday music perhaps?

    • Tori November 14, 2017

This is literally a great time to release a single or album or even tickets. The holidays is when people are pretty much spending money on unnecessary things and music is one of those things. With all the holiday gift cards and gift shopping and money gifts, this is literally the only time music can honestly sale like it use to and if you have big numbers there’s a strong possibility of you getting a Grammy stage performance which means even more number in the next coming year. The only down side of releasing 4th quarter is that you have to perform well at the end of one year and the incoming year to maintain your sales against newer albums and compete for Grammy subs over fresher albums.

idk but he s*** as hell. I am surprised he did well on the tours even when his second album was not as popular as the first one. He needs to go to interscope where they spend time on every traction their artist is on. Def jam seems to have a lot of back door antics. He is not the first artist in recent times, that has complained about def jams.

The label budget must be low and they have to wait until next year to release his album. Makes sense when iggy’s album didn’t come out with Dej Jam

I like him & I think he is hella s*** & a really really nice guy but the type of person he is won’t work for the Urban listeners of today. Urban fans want there artist music to be a hot ratchet mess like Migoes & Guicc Gang. A nice guy like him needs to do a song with Ed Sheran or Taylor Swift he needs a much more emotionally sensitive community of people to like him. Maybe even a song with Selena Gomez or Nail from One Direction or Zayn!
