Katy Perry: “I Start Trends, Not Follow Them”

Published: Tuesday 28th Nov 2017 by Sam

2017 has been a mixed bag for Katy Perry.

Indeed, at its start, ample anticipation surrounded her grand return. Only for her comeback to deliver lukewarm results commercially [see: ‘Witness,’ ‘Bon Appetit,’ ‘Swish Swish’].

She also seemed to lose that elusive essence of “cool” and, by way of questionable creative choices, became more of a meme that a viably charting star.

And yet still she arguably had the last laugh by snagging a $25 million payday to head up the judging panel on ABC’s ‘American Idol’ revival.

Now, as she hits the promo trail for the show ahead of its March 2018 premiere, she’s raising eyebrows once again.

See what we mean below…

When speaking to PEOPLE about her tough judging style, she went on to speak about the need to evolve as an artist.

Perhaps most interesting was her assertion that she likes to “start trends, not follow them”

Fascinating choice of words. Especially given that she usually rides waves rather than cause them.

Even before this era’s ill-advised attempt at “Urban” (which she roped in the likes of Migos, Nicki Minaj, and Skip Marley for), it’s not as if her candy-coated flavour of Pop was anything vastly different from the norm.

Like, the tried and true Max Martin/Dr Luke combo that once worked for Katy is one that’s worked for many an artist before and after her.

Sure, she’s been incredibly successful. But to confuse that with being a trend setter (in any way) makes us wonder just how “woke” she is about her own positioning in the Pop sphere.

Katy’s holistically quite harmless, but this was a faux pas.

Your thoughts?

Almost as delusional as the BeyHive claim that Beyoncé is Michael Jackson’s second coming.

    • Coolio November 28, 2017

The fact that you said shows that beyonce is even close to being second h**.
Watch your man….and then you should watch your mouth.

Lmao very true, that’s the ultimate delusion. She isn’t even close to LaToya’s level lmao.

    Delusions of grandeur….

  6. Carlitos November 28, 2017

She’s right though. Katy pretty much reinvented pop music with Teenage Dream. Just wait a couple more years, she will be bigger than she is now.

      Lmmfao what is that, sarcasm?

      • Carlitos November 28, 2017

Well, let’s see…she’s more successful than your lame ass who constantly trolls this site, waiting for whatever form of validation that you’ll never get. Give it a break. So pathetic.

      • SMH November 28, 2017

And what type of pathetic validation are you hoping for with your lame delusions? Lmao sit down little boy.

    Gworl goodbye.

For once, I co-sign with this site. She is far from a trendsetter- it doesn’t get any more mainstream than Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Also, she stole “Roar” from Sara Bareilles and her original song “Brave.”

    If that’s her thoughts ? ok…

  10. JOHNVIDAL November 28, 2017

    Super super delusional.
Oh and where are those two sad stans she had that were always obsessed with Lady Gaga like on very personal levels? Where are they now that Katy Perry is the fastest pop star to be done ever? Like in less than a year from being a hit maker (in todays poor singles charts) to being totally over?

    • sammy November 29, 2017

Gaga’s predicament is worse considering how big she was. She really dropped and her current music is completely off with the GP. At least katy had worldwide hits this year.
