Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week in 1998 #FBF

Lauryn Hill Makes History With Debut Solo Single 'Doo Wop (That Thing)'
Published: Friday 10th Nov 2017 by Rashad

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll do ‘Doo-Wop (That Thing)’ – the debut solo release from former Fugees frontwoman Lauryn Hill.  Launched late October 1998, the tune – written and produced by Hill – became the first debut single of any artist in history to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 (where it was found this week that year).  A signature of the singer’s for its hard-hitting subject matter cloaked in a sonic fusion of Motown-inspired doo wop and hip hop, the song went on to Gold status before earning a few golden Gramophones at the 1999 Grammys – Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance specifically.  Helping lead its parent album, the iconic ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,’ to whopping sales of nearly 20 million worldwide, it stands today as one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Tuck in below to see who joined Lauryn this week in 1998:

I wish I was older at that time. The music was so good.

I was a freshman in college in 1998! I was in my first semester at an HBCU listening to The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill in my dorm room, eating something greasy and studying something boring…yaaaas, just young, gifted and black chile lol

      • Electrikblue November 10, 2017

Wow you’re that old? You’re immature af. You’re always on here carrying on like a teenager. WOW I’m truly shocked

      • Fancy BISH November 10, 2017

You HAVE to be out of your mind! You’re focusing on turn up moments! Go back and read my posts when the subject matter MEANS something! And what about you boo? You’re pointing fingers? My cousin who’s 10 thought I was 16 the other day! Young, gifted and black….without a crack intact! lol

You’re right this site isn’t meant to be taken seriously. I did think only young people were on here based off how they attack each other and the celebs.

  2. Meme November 10, 2017

It’s sad she never released anything of this caliber after this album. Real masterpiece.

      ☕️

Very true. Sadly, she fell into the same trap that SO many women fall into; putting her man’s needs & well being ahead of her own. As a result, her art suffered.

Dio Wop (That Thing), The Power of Good-Bye, Truly Madly Deeply, I don’t Want To Miss A Thing, You’re Still The One, all classics now, how many songs in the top 20 of the hot 100 this week are going to be classics? ZERO, that’s the difference, music in the 80’s and 90’s was made to last, music these days is made to chart.

    • Fancy BISH November 10, 2017

      Yaaaas ☕️

    • JOHNVIDAL November 10, 2017

The difference is appalling. And you can include the 00s too. They weren´t as bad as it is now but it was nothing like the 90s already, No matter how many kids get mad in these blogs when they get said their precious era (the 00s and Beyonce´s success and all that pretty generic R&B-hip-hop topping the charts all the time) was already not as good.

  4. MUSICHEAD November 10, 2017

1998 was the best year of music I’ve ever witnessed

  5. JOHNVIDAL November 10, 2017

1998 was a fantastic year. At the end of the day it was the year that definitely elevated Celine Dion to legendary status for decades to come with one of those monumental moments that only happen once every… in music. That year for her was probably the biggest thing in music since Whitney´s the Bodyguard in 1993.

People love to sleep on Monica, but she has so many hits & is the only R&B female from the 90s to consecutively place #1 R&B hits from the 90s, 2000s & 2010s. Put some RESPECK on her name!

    • ??? November 10, 2017

lol, exactly, monica was THE r&b chick at that time. the stans of that washed up vocal pamphlet might wanna take notice lmao.

  7. whut November 10, 2017

One correction: Lauryn was the first FEMALE artist to debut at #1 on the Hot 100. The first artist overall to debut at #1 was Michael with ‘You Are Not Alone’ in ’95.

    • Bertie November 10, 2017

No, Mariah was… Lauryn Hill was the first artist to debut at number one with a debut single

    • King z November 10, 2017

Both of u are right and wrong at the same time. Yes Mj was first and Mariah was the first female but Lauryn (as the article CORRECTLY STATES) was the first artist to debut her DEBUT single at #1
