The Ratings Are In! Mariah Carey Comeback Delivers Dynamite Ratings For Dick Clark’s New Year Rockin’ Eve

Published: Tuesday 2nd Jan 2018 by Sam

Mariah Carey hit the right notes during her much-hyped performance at Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve – and in the process helped steer the show to sky-high ratings.

Details below…

As widely reported, Mimi’s disastrous showing at the 2016 show left her red-faced after an “audio malfunction” rendered her unable to hear and thus not sing.

Hence, when “take 2” was announced just days before the live broadcast, the anticipation was intense. Indeed, the masses were left wondering whether she’d deliver or if a sequel was on the cards.

Said buzz (along with high-profile performances from others such as Britney Spears and Kelly Clarkson) helped lift ratings from the year before.

For, according to TV By The Numbers, here’s how the numbers looked:

Part 1 of the special, from 8-10 p.m. ET, averaged a 3.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.11 million viewers, up from 1.9 and 6.61 million from the previous year.

The 10 p.m. onwards portion (which included Mariah’s near-midnight slot) drew a 5.0 and 15.72 million viewers, compared to 3.6 and 11.56 in 2016.

As a whole, the three-hour primetime broadcast was up 48% in adults 18-49 vs the 2016 instalment.

**********

Great bookend to the over all story!

We’d love to now see Mimi leverage this towards the benefit of her upcoming album.

Because as the age old adage goes – “everybody loves a comeback.” She’s planted the seed, now it’s over to her and her new team at Roc Nation to water it and re-grow her presence in the contemporary music landscape.

We’re rooting for her.

  4. Carlitos January 2, 2018

Wait…but wasn’t she also on last year? So it’s not because of Mariah, obviously. ?

    • Cj January 2, 2018

It is because of Mimi obviously, the anticipation of of her coming back like Sam said drew the ratings of this year. Are you dumb?

      • G.O.D. January 2, 2018

You are the dumb one here. The Only reason people tuned in at the Mariah moment was to have a good laugh while watching her fail. Wich she didn’t.

    ??

  8. SMH January 2, 2018

I love all these smoke & mirrors hype. The time slot is the last 2 hours before the new year-the highest rated part of the program EVERY YEAR. Has absolutely nothing to do with who’s performing, it New years Eve for Christ sake, folks watch at that time every year any way lol.

    • pon_de January 2, 2018

So….how do you explain 4+ million more people tuning in during the Mariah time slot compared to the amount that tuned in last year?? Stay mad that 3 decades into the game, she is still drawing viewers and cashing checks.

    • JOHNVIDAL January 3, 2018

SMH Ridiculous reasoning. She raised the ratings. Same way Madonna and Gaga did with their Superbowl performances but Beyonce, Katy and Bruno didn´t. It is what it is. At least give props when they are due. Some people like to mock legends when they get older. But reality is they know they are real legends deep inside, and eventually accept them back again. Mariah is one of those true greats that will live forever.

Excuse me, y’all need to update them numbers. The 11:30-12:32 portion (which included Mariah’s highly-anticipated performance) drew 25.6M views, which is the highest since 1991 and is the year’s highest rated music program, outpacing the Grammys! Put some respect on Mimi’s name!!

The haters are UNREAL they have 2016 and 2017 numbers and still refuse to accept THE UEEN.

  11. DanYiel Iman January 2, 2018

She’s a great performer but surely her vocals are much older now!!

    • Marcel January 3, 2018

You have gotta be one of the most annoying people that comment here

  12. JOHNVIDAL January 3, 2018

This is not the first time Mariah has made ratings raise. Same way Celine and Whitney have done it. On the other hand that supposed King has never been able to do it. Same with Ritry. Just a thought about which artists have been more universal during at least some points of their careers.

This was supposed to be the Who’s moment, performing “Who Are You” and “My Generation” – complete with guitar smashing! I hate New Year’s Rockin’ Eve for this! Nothing against Mariah, but Pete & Roger are more superior!
