Childish Gambino has done it!
The eclectic star has shot straight in at #1 of the Billboard Hot 100 with new single ‘This Is America.’
The socially conscious cut becomes the first chart topper for Donald Glover‘s musical alter ego, besting his previous peak of #12 with last year’s ‘Red Bone.’
To achieve the feat, he knocked off Drake, whose ‘Nice For What’ had reigned for four weeks.
Diving into the numbers, ‘America’ accelerated to the apex of the pack thanks largely to its highly viral music video.
For, it amassed a whopping 65.3 million U.S. streams in its first tracking week – with 68% stemming from its accompanying visual.
The jam also racked up 78,000 downloads.
Notably, it wasn’t sent to radio, hence only conjured up an all-format radio audience of 9.4 million. A reality which makes its chart success even more impressive.
Beyond being the best of starts for Glover’s new album campaign, this serves as potent proof that there is still ample power in the music video format.
It should act as a challenge to artists to up the ante and strive to develop compelling, engaging, and impactful visuals because there are very real wins to reap.
Congrats Childish Gambino!
