Missy Elliott had fans saying WTF after her last three singles (‘WTF,’ ‘Pep Rally,’ and ‘I’m Better’) all came and went without their parent album being furnished.
The release of the critically acclaimed cuts only extended the already 10 year+ long wait, a feat that certainly didn’t go unnoticed by her faithful followers. Finally – over a year after the release of ‘Better’ – the rapstress responded to their requests for new music by taking to Twitter earlier this month to explain her absence:

That’s why her comeback has never taken place. After „loose control“ all of her music has been just weird and most of the times noise. I love her old stuff and love the cookbook album or whatever it has been called, but to be honest – I think she lost her mojo. All of the singles she has released and even though there has always been hype for a comeback, none of it took off. And that’s because they have been horrible. Too bad, because I would love to have a talented and intelligent female rapper around.
I hope mutha comes through ?? Missy has always thrived on having people ‘get‘ her sound – I think this is a case of trying to not sound like the 90‘s/ 2000‘s and come with something fresh but she’s lost that cohesiveness somehow. Thing is – Missy is a perfectionist and more talented than a lot of today’s writers, producers, rappers and Vocalists – she can (and has) done it ALL ✅ So many others have come back and found their groove/lane – I know Missy can do it too (Janet, Mariah, Nivea, Ciara) she needs to go back to rap filled with character, personality and humour and get those strong hooks and melodies back. No one is looking for lyrically sparse tracks over trap beatz from Missy.
Just come with the fire crazy style we used to Missy and I’ll be here for it. I’m actually going to buy a physical copy Missy means that much to me ?
Missy will be fine. She have saved some of your fav’s bland ass songs. At this point she don’t have to worry about charts, Grammys, or money. You know you a bad bish when you don’t even have to tour.
Doesn’t sound good. As a matter of fact, none of her recent singles have been good. It’s crazy because the songs she did for other artists within the past few years (Fantasia, J. Cole, Ariana) have been good.
I think we are used to Missy coming with fresh sounds, which she hasn’t done in quite some time.

I love Missy but this is not it. Her stuff is usually fire, but her last few attempts to return to former glory have been unsuccessful. Hopefully, she’ll return to the lab and release something proper.
Pharrell imo gave Missy one of her best with “WTF”, and her performance of the song on The Voice was perfection. This new song though, like the majority of them in the last 5 years, should never have been recorded. Seems like so many artists reach a point where they can no longer connect with their sound and they still convince themselves that their new material is great–that’s the story with Missy, Usher, Alicia… it’s really too bad.
