diva duets It Takes Two: The Best Of Diva Duets

As fans embrace ‘The Boy Is Mine’ successor ‘It All Belongs To Me’ – the dynamic R&B reunion of belters Brandy and Monica – the song looks to kick off what may be a year of diva double teams.  With Keyshia Coleseeking the assistance of Ms. Norwood as well, (now silenced) rumors ofRihanna and Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keysentreating Adele, and now news that Britney Spearsmay be featured on Queen of Pop Madonna‘s forthcoming ‘MDNA’, the divas are joining forces like never before to tackle the Billboard charts.

In honor (and anticipation) of these 2012 alliances, That Grape Juice has collected 12 of our favorite diva duets.

VH1 To Crown ‘The 100 Greatest Women In Music’

vh1 VH1 To Crown The 100 Greatest Women In Music

Seems like divas are everyone’s talk.  For, much like That Grape Juice, VH1 is on a quest to crown ‘the ultimate diva’  and (based on fan votes) tally up the 100 greatest women of music history.  The survey comes as their second – the first saw acts Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner take the number 1 and 2 spots respectively while acts like Madonna and Billie Holiday filled out the top 10.

As with most ‘best of’ collections however, much fan uproar encouraged the music channel to redo and revamp their original listing.  With 6 categories – “All Time”, “90s”, “80s”, “Pop”, “Rock”, and “Hip Hop/R&B” – VH1 is introducing a more comprehensive compilation of divas to include, unlike their original survey, more contemporary performers.

With singer acts like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, and Beyonce facing off against legends Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, Barbara Streisand, Madonna, and more, the results should be more than interesting.  As the first of the series’ week long airing starts February 13th, fans must hurry before voting closes.

Showdown: Who’s the Ultimate Diva?

divas Showdown: Whos the Ultimate Diva?
Diva. A word, much like ‘flop’, ‘epic’, and ‘underrated’, that has, in years of late, seen itself overused and overextended to any chick who ever owned an ounce of relevancy. But, before it was a household term, there were a select few who denoted ‘diva’ effortlessly, helping to turn the term into the epitome of estrogenic swag that it is today. And while every genre has its set of leading ladies, there are some whose range defied limits – unable to be captured by any musical mode. In such, they captured the hearts of legions of fans and earned the title ‘diva’ by merit and not self-christening.

The divine 9 (plus 1…) – Aretha, Celine, Diana, Janet, Madonna, Mariah, Patti, Tina, and Whitney need no introduction. By mention of mononym alone, these musical monarchs inspire applause. So, in one of our most epic showdowns yet, we turn to you – That Grape Juice faithful – to tell us who dominates the diva domain?

In areas of performance, fashion, and overall influence, cast your vote for the ultimate as the Pop elite faceoff after the jump. They paved the way and set the bar for the likes of Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and more to glide their heels across, but they’re still the few your faves are still trying to be…

Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson have been busy rehearsing for their performance at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony this Sunday. Alongside Yolanda Adams, Florence Welch and Martina McBride, the powerhouse vocalists will be honoring the mother of all divas, Aretha Franklin.

Expect the group to open their tribute to Franklin with ‘Natural Woman’, followed by individual renditions of her classic hits. Christina Aguilera Set To Open The Grammy Awards?

christinaaguilera 709x1024 Christina Aguilera Set To Open The Grammy Awards?

In what could possibly be a make or break moment in her career, Christina Aguilera is reportedly scheduled to open the 2011 Grammy Awards. The former chart-topper will supposedly team up with fellow vocal powerhouse Jennifer Hudson and 3 other artists at the February 13th event to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

The stakes for this performance could not be any higher. Franklin is one of the most renowned artists of our time so there is not doubt that all eyes will be fixed on that segment.

Regardless of the current condition of her voice and the scathing backlash that she received for her performance at the Super Bowl, Aguilera would still be taking a huge risk by attempting to cover Franklin’s music. In fact, very few singers ever dare to tackle Franklin’s records because of incredible complexity of her arrangements.

If Aguilera thinks that she can get away with screaming her way through the performance like she did with her James Brown tribute in 2007 then she is sorely mistaken. She needs to be careful because this could be all that is needed for the general public to turn their backs on her for good.

From The Vault: Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion & Others – ‘A Natural Woman’ (Divas Live 1998)

With reports surfacing this week that she is experiencing serious health complications, I see no better time than the present to pay homage to the Queen, Aretha Franklin. Hence, this week’s From The Vault features the icon belting out one of her signatures tunes - ‘A Natural Woman’. Alongside Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Carol King (the song’s writer), Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain, Franklin created a legendary moment in television at Vh1′s ‘Divas Live’ in 1998.

There is absolutely no question that Franklin is the most influential artist of the last 50 years. Every singer to emerge in the industry after her arrival has been inspired by her voice, either directly or indirectly. From Michael Jackson to Whitney Houston to Mariah to Beyonce to Lady GaGa, there isn’t a single artist who can deny her influence on their music.

Moreover, Franklin personifies the very meaning of the word ‘diva’. She is more than just an act with a few hits – she is a woman who has changed the game, establishing a legacy that will live on for generations.

Thus, that filth that Vh1 aired last weekend - ‘Vh1 Divas: Salute The Troops’ – should be viewed as an insult to her and all of the other singers who previously appeared on the show. Still, I digress. Long live the Queen!

Christina Aguilera – ‘Keeps Gettin’ Better’ Video

Following a lengthy wait (one so long I almost forgot it was even being released), Christina Aguilera’s brand new video ‘Keeps Gettin’ Better’ premiered on iLike.com moments ago. At the risk of sounding kinda blunt, Christina could have kept the Peter Berg directed clip. It’s rubbish.

Ironically, it’s the special effects in the special effects laden vid that let this down. It just looks cheap and dated. What’s more Xtina looks bored. Here’s hoping she bucks up her ideas for her forthcoming full-length album (due early next year). In the meanwhile, you can pick up Christina’s greatest hits effort ‘Keep Gettin’ Better’ on November 11th.

What do you think of the video?
