‘Sunday Best’ Showdown: Kim Burrell Weighs In On Infamous Contestant Confrontation

It’s definitely been the “read heard around the world.”

While gospel music lovers normally get their praise and their laughs on during the auditions of BET’s hit faith-based reality singing competition ‘Sunday Best,’ the most memorable moment of the show’s season 7 premiere last week brought with it no laughing matter.

Jaws dropped and wigs snatched came as the aftermath of contestant Dennis Bingham’s berating tirade launched against judges Kim Burrell and Donnie McClurkin for laughing during his audition.  The footage has made its way across the net in a similar fiery fashion, receiving many-an-amen from viewers who supported his stance.

After 14 years of seeing its stages graced by the best of R&B and gospel including legends Whitney Houston and The Clark Sisters to new schoolers Monica, Destiny’s Child, and more, the show appeared to be at the height of its popularity.  As the 2014 edition, hosted by Academy Award-nominated actress Taraji P. Hot Shot: Monica and Brandy Share Snaps From Backstage of BET Awards

As fans know, no two singers have paid more homage to the late great Whitney Houston than ‘The Boy Is Mine’ co-stars Brandy & Monica.  So, it would only be fitting that they would take to tonight’s stage to tribute their idol in what many will say came as the highlight of the 2012 BET Awards.

Kicking off with Monica’s soul-stirring rendition of ‘I Love the Lord’ followed by Brandy’s electric ‘I’m Your Baby Tonight’/‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’ medley, the two divas blazed the stage like never before in Houston’s honor.

With excitement still at a high from the showing(s), Mo took to Twitter to share a snap of the two backstage.  As ever, we at That Grape Juice salute Whitney and Monica/Brandy for being the reminders that there are still vocalists left who nurture their crafts without the assistance of studio magic!  See their performances here.
