Britney Lip-Synch Drama Rocks Australia

britney Britney Lip Synch Drama Rocks Australia

Pop superstar Britney Spears is said to be ‘extremely upset’, following the controversy which greeted her recent Australian shows.

The mother of two, whose hugely successful Circus tour, hit Down Under last week, was reported to have left fans disgruntled after lip-synching the entire set, with some angry fans even leaving the show’s venue, Perth Burswood Dome, after just three songs. Other fans were reportedly disgruntled as they were unable to see Spears on the large screens, with some simply unsatisfied with her ‘lackluster’ performance.

“We are really big Britney fans, but it was crap,” Josh Blee complained to Australia’s News Limited newspapers. “I thought after the music awards she would make up for it with a wicked concert, but she has let us down.”

Some fans had paid up to $1,500 AUD to watch the show from a two-person loveseat “ringside” at the circus-themed concert. Regular seats were sold for $200 AUD. The Australian tour is Spears’ first of the continent.

The debate is not a media spectacle alone, with Australian Fair Trading Minister, Virginia Judge, stating that Sydneysiders would not tolerate a “Mickey Mouse performance” – referring to Britney’s childhood stint in the Disney Mouseketeers.”Let’s be clear – live means live,” she said. ”If you are spending up to $200, I think you deserve better than a film clip.”The NSW Government would be happy to look at options, such as a disclaimer on a ticket which would warn consumers a performance is pre-recorded.” {Source}

I kinda go back and forth with myself about this one; on the one hand, some artists’ main forte is stage-show spectacle and overall performance (see: Janet, Ciara etc), hence lip-synching isn’t that big a deal. Yet on the other hand, surely if you’re a singer, you should actually sing, regardless of whether ‘performer’ or otherwise? It doesn’t help Britney’s case either that she seems to have forgotten how to dance as well.

Nonetheless, I’m sure fans will continue to flock to her shows and she’ll keep making that cash. I must say, though, I do like the Fair Trading lady’s stance on adding a disclaimer on tickets; as many an artist would rather risk sounding a hot a** mess on stage (in the process bettering their talent in the long run IMO), than have their lip-synching exposed. A win-win for everyone, right?

New Video: Britney Spears – ‘3′

The video for Britney Spears’ #1 hit ‘3’ premiered today. Unfortunately for those anticipating the Diane Martel directed clip, the video is a real snoozer. All the visual gloss, fancy sets and troop of dancers cannot conceal the fact that – as blunt as it sounds – Ms. Spears has lost ‘it’. In being 200% honest with you, I can’t say I believe she ever got ‘it’ back after her breakdown. Despite the spectacle around her since her media-sanctioned ‘comeback’ last year, I’ve yet to see that spark that had commentators heralding her as the next Janet or Madonna. There is something distinctly run-of-the-mill, stiff and uninspiring about 2009 Britney Spears.

Not to be mistaken for as a dig at her personally, I’m simply of the opinion that her much publicised issues clearly have put a dent into her confidence – hence the so/so calibre of performances we’ve seen from her as of late. Yet in being fair and judging her, in her current state, on the same plateau as her industry rivals, she comes across average at best. I can’t help but think that ‘comeback’ could have waited a few more years, while she fully came into her own again personally.

What do you think of the video?

Britney Makes History; ‘3′ Debuts At #1 + Video Set Pics

brit3 Britney Makes History; 3 Debuts At #1 + Video Set Pics

Things continue to get better for the once-troubled Pop superstar Britney Spears. This week sees ‘3′ the lead single from her forthcoming greatest hits LP ‘The Singles Collection’ debut atop of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Check out the report below, as well as set pics from the Diane Martel (’Love, Sex, Magic’) directed video, which is set to premiere October 19th:

Britney Spears will become the first artist in over three years to debut at the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 tomorrow.

The singer’s new single ‘3′, which is taken from her upcoming singles collection, has shifted over 255,000 downloads in its first week of release, according to Billboard.

The track is also expected to reach pole position on the Digital Songs countdown and debut at number 49 on the Radio Songs/Hot 100 Airplay, which is based on airplay audience on all radio formats.

The last song to debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 was Taylor Hicks’s American Idol winners song ‘Do I Make You Proud’ in July 2006.

Britney’s first single ‘…Baby One More Time’ spent two weeks at the top spot in 1999 and ‘Womanizer’ enjoyed one week at number one last October. {Source}

I  guess this is pretty much a testament to Britney’s staying power in today’s industry; I say this as I still feel the song is generic as hell and a far cry from some of her more career defining material. That said, I can’t hate on her game…

New Song: Britney Spears – ‘3′ (New Single)

Britney 3

Pop superstar Britney Spears is celebrating her 10th year in the music industry with a new compilation titled ‘The Singles Collection’. Featuring all her singles to date, the record hits stores November 24th via Jive and will be proceeded by the Max Martin produced new cut ‘3′, which you can listen to below.

With ‘Blackout’ and the sound Britney went for with that record pretty much standing as her finest musical moment (IMO), it’s a little hard to digest the so-so/’doing-it-for-the-sake-of’ music she’s been churning out recently. No, it’s not bad, yet nothing I imagine I’d been itching to hit ‘play’ on again. Yawn.

New Song: Amerie – ‘Heard Em All’ (2nd Single)

Amerie - 'Heard Em All' (2nd Single)

The second single to be lifted from Amerie’s ‘In Love & War’ LP, ‘Heard Em All’, surfaced today – and I’m glad to say it’s a winner. Produced by Eric Hudson and penned by Sean Garrett, the uptempo cut relies heavily on African drums and a haunting tribal-call sounding hook from Amerie. Frantic, fierce and future hit written all over, this is everything ‘Why R U’, as the album’s lead single, should have been. Hearing this definitely restores my faith in the project.
Tidbit: It was just the other day I was saying to a friend how I’d love to hear more traditional African influences in contemporary R&B and Hip-Hop.

BET Awards 2009 Uncovered: All Is Revealed

BET Awards 2009 Uncovered: All Is RevealedLike many, I sat there at 5am Monday morning UK time wondering why the hell I’d just wasted almost 4 hours of my life watching the BET Awards 2009 and it’s half-a**ed ‘tribute’ to the undisputed King of Pop – something only Janet’s appearance helped put into perspective.
Many questions swirled in my head: Where was the much hyped Chris Brown performance? The whereabouts of Usher, Justin, Whitney – all who were as good as confirmed for the show? Why did Beyonce – the biggest artist in the industry today and a huge MJ fan – perform her own cut ‘Ave Maria’? All these and many more, left me hella perplexed.
Well now Matthew Cherry – a former producer of the now-ended show ‘The Game’ and head of Cherry Entertainment – has come forth with behind the scenes info on the show and the last minute change-arounds that resulted in the product we saw on Sunday night. A lengthy, yet very interesting read I must say:

What’s going on world. I haven’t really blogged much since getting this account, save for putting my video work up, but after last nights BET Awards I had to say something. So many thoughts ran threw my mind last night after I watched the awards and here they are.

I did not work the BET Awards. I was there with the DP that I worked with on Girlfriends and I was there observing the show rehearsals from the control room. As you all know I go hard on twitter and the reason for a lot of my excitement was due to what I saw in rehearsal. I was one of the few people that saw the rehearsals prior to the show airing and for some reason or another a lot changed from what was originally supposed to air.

Here is what changed. Alica Keys and Wyclef were supposed to sing “Heal The World” after they accepted their humanitarian award. Beyonce was first going to sing Smooth Criminal then they changed it to I’ll Be There/Halo and then she sang something from her own album the day of the show “Ava Marie”. T-pain rehearsed signing “Rock With You” and that was on show rundown as well. I’m kinda glad he didn’t sing that though. Then on top of all of this, of course there was the Chris Brown drama. As of Friday Chris Brown was slated to perform and he was going to sing “Man In The Mirror”. I’ve heard a lot of rumors as to why he didn’t the most talked about one being that Jay-z had him pulled from the show. Not sure if that’s true but I will say this. Beyonce, Jay-Z, Al Sharpton, Joe Jackson and some of the Jackson family all sat in the front row in the same row. Jay-Z and Al Sharpton have said publicly that they do not support Chris in this situation and that they sided with Rihanna. Entertainment is way more political than a lot of you may know and the mere fact that he did not perform caused such a big distraction could you imagine what may have happened if he did. This night should have been all about MJ.

With that said I would have tweeted during the show but my phone died and all I left you with was feelings of excitement about the show. I am a director but first and foremost I am a fan of a lot of these artists and I was sitting in the crowd enjoying great music like everyone else. If my phone didn’t die trust me my messages would have been a lot different.

First off I love Jamie Foxx and I think he is an amazing talent. With that said I do feel that he promoted his concerts too much and him and Neyo performed way too many times. There are too many talented performers in the industry to have them sing three or four songs each. You can tell they didn’t have much time to rehearse as he constantly asked if the feed was on and he walked off stage numerous times when he was supposed to be on stage. That’s more of a timing thing and with two days to get ready I’ll give them a pass.

In regards to the performances. I loved the old school soul music tributes with Guy, Keith Sweat and New Edition. I loved Beyonce, Jay-z, Maxwell, The Young Ojay’s and the new Ojays. I thought Tevin Campbell was random as hell and I have no idea why he performed. I think that was supposed to be Chris Brown’s spot because on the production schedule it just had special guest named in that segment.

Here is what I hated about the awards. In regards to the lack of the presenters announcing the nominees at the time I thought was warranted but looking back it seemed rushed and awkward. I hated Don Cornelius being anywhere near a mic and I also found it odd that so many people swore when they knew the show was live. The Baby Boy skit was in bad taste and Ving Rhames…I mean what the hell was he doing. There were way more MJ tributes and cover scheduled that for one reason or another just didn’t happen. There was no news about The Game as much as they re-run the episodes and with them possibly acquiring the show I would have thought the cast would have at least presented an award. Why the hell did Young Money bring out all those kids when they where singing about fucking every girl in the world? Jamie went to the top of the balcony and did a segment with the fans everyone seemed so ghetto. Everyone was mugging for the camera, holding up CD’s and calling their boys, SMH These were the times during the show that I actually covered my face in embarrassment.

There were some positives. I love that BET honored people that weren’t entertainers and celebrities doctors, mayors, lawyers etc. Our young people need to know that you don’t have to be a rapper and an actor to be successful. A man proposed to his girlfriend during one of the commercial break, I wonder if it aired? Jamie Foxx was funny as a host and his MJ outfits were on point. Janet Jackson at the end. She was so strong for doing that. That alone made the show worth it.

All in all I am still a huge fan of awards shows, I mean, where else can you see 20 different performances in one night. I feel like BET tried to do too much and maybe they should have either dedicated an entire segment to Mike or did an entire show all about him. I definitely jumped the gun with my excitement for the show but if you would have saw what I saw then you would have said the same things I did. I so also think that it’s a different experience seeing something live rather than on TV but it is what it is. I truly hope that BET steps there game up next time and they learn from this experience.

Thanks for reading

-Matthew “Mac” Cherry

This really explains a whole lot. Nonetheless, I have yet to find valid justification for Beyonce’s performance being changed, as well as Chris Brown not performing. Jamie Foxx has since gone on to say this was to ‘protect’ Brown. I call BS, as – without sounding cut-throat -if there was one time where Chris Brown’s recent drama wouldn’t have been at the center of media scrutiny or even relevant it would be now – a time when the world is dealing with the loss of the greatest entertainer of our time. That said, the age old adage does indeed go ‘what’s done is done’. Here’s hoping BET commission a full-fledged Tribute show sometime down the line.

Jennifer Hudson’s Fiance Joins WWE

Jennifer Hudson’s fiance David Otunga has officially joined World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) (random or what?). The Harvard graduate and former ‘I Love New York’ contestant made his wrestling debut at the company’s official development territory Flordia Championship Wrestling (FCW) this week.

As a big wrestling fan, once upon a time (and to a less extent today), it’s not oft you see people from other media arenas join the WWE – especially as wrestlers. Like the commentators say I’m sure all eyes will be on him from here on out. I mean, I never ever envisioned posting a wrestling match on That Grape Juice LOL.

Randomness: WWF/E was the business during the ‘Attitude’ days. HBK, Austin, The Rock, DX, Mankind, Undertaker…ahh childhood memories!

Wedding Bells For Ashanti & Nelly?

Wedding Bells For Ashanti & Nelly?

After for more than 4 years of dating, reports are suggesting Ashanti and Nelly are finally set to tie the knot this year:
R&B star ASHANTI has hinted she will marry her rapper lover NELLY in 2009.
Just four months after the couple went public with its four year romance, the singer has confessed she is planning to walk down the aisle with Nelly.
When asked if wedding bells were on the horizon for her, the Happy hitmaker tells Us Weekly, “Absolutely. It’s in the cards for me. I believe that I have a couple more things I need to do before that happens.”
But Ashanti urges fans not to believe all the gossip that’s written about her and Nelly – despite the media correctly predicting their relationship, years before they admitted it to the world.
She adds, “I should have had six or seven kids, been married three times and secretly engaged now. But none of it’s true.” {Source}

A big congratulations to them, if true. It goes to show, there actually are some relationships that can last the distance in the crazy world that is the entertainment industry.

LaTavia At LeToya’s Birthday Bash

LaTavia At LeToya's Birthday Bash

Original Destiny’s Child member LaTavia Roberson made a (very) rare appearance at former bandmate LeToya Luckett’s 28th birthday bash at Bambou in Houston last night.
I’m liking her look – a lot. After years in hibernation, it’s great to see her looking so well.
I do wonder though, what happened to the supposed solo career LaTavia was rumored to be embarking on around the time LeToya first hit the scene on a solo tip? Word has it she could (and can) actually sing.

New Songs: Janet Jackson – ‘Clap Your Hands’ & ‘What Can I Say’

Two new Janet Jackson tracks surfaced today in the form of ‘Clap Your Hands’ & ‘What Can I Say’. Both produced by ‘Crazy In Love’ supremo ‘Rich Harrison’, the songs were recorded for Janet’s criminally underrated 2004 effort ‘Damita Jo’. You can listen to both cuts below:

Clap Your Hands

Can’t say I’m liking this one at all. Having followed Ms. Jackson’s career for some time now, I know that this track had taken on a cult status of sorts, after being discussed, yet not heard not for so long. After listening to it I’m thinking it may have been better left that way – that is (left) unheard, I mean. I could barely understand a word she was saying and the production was so-so.

What Can I Say

Liking this one a little more. Still nothing album worthy here IMO.

With label drama sinking Janet’s latest effort ‘Discipline’, I’m still itching for new material from her – successful new material. If Madonna can still go out there and thrust her waist and crank out hits – there sure ain’t any reason why Janet can’t. Everything just needs to be right; here’s hoping it works out next go round.

Nelly – ‘One & Only’ Video

Despite the tanking of his most recent LP ‘Brass Knuckles’, Nelly continues to churn out videos from the set -the latest being for the Polow Da Don produced ‘One & Only’. Put simply, both the song and video (though slightly better) are ‘just there’ aka ‘blah’. Unlike some though, I still feel as if Nelly can make his mark again – just not with the crappy songs from this album. “Dust yourself off and try again…”
