As we reported here last week, Ed Sheeran was in shape to make history with ‘Shape of You’ and ‘Castle on the Hill’ – the highly anticipated leading releases from his forthcoming album, ‘Divide.’

Now that the Billboard Hot 100 has refreshed, news has officially come in indicating the singer/songwriter has indeed penciled his name into history books for a jaw-dropping feat.

Billboard reports:

Chart Check [Billboard 200]: The Weeknd’s ‘Star Boy’ Bounces Back To #1

the weeknd thatgrapejuice starboy #1

After two weeks of dominating the Billboard 200 thanks to holiday album sales and streams, vocal group Pentatonix gets pushed out of the top spot by The Weeknd‘s latest set ‘Star Boy.’

The project, his second chart-topper, debuted at #1 six weeks ago and stayed there for a week before being ousted by the competition.  This week, however, courtesy of some serious streaming, the album has been lifted back to the chart’s perch.

Billboard reports:

‘…[‘Star Boy’] climbs from No. 2 to No. 1 (for a second week in the penthouse) with 69,000 equivalent album units (down 26 percent) earned in the week ending Jan. 5, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 18,000 were in traditional album sales (down 46 percent)…

Chart Check [Billboard 200]: George Michael Moves Over 100,000 Units The Week After His Death

Singer’s Catalog Sales Rise Over 2,600% In Week Following Death

george-michael-thatgrapejuice-billboard-200

As the music world is still reeling from the untimely death of Grammy-winning crooner George Michael, new fans and old are clinging to the singer’s prized discography to remember him.

And, while it’s by no means unusual for an artist’s catalog to see a boost in sales posthumously, some acts – as legends David Bowie, Whitney Houston, and Prince exhibited at the time of their passings – exceed even the highest expectations.  Now, Michael can add his name to that list.

Billboard reports:

“In the week ending Dec. 29, sales of Michael’s music — including with his former duo, Wham! — increased 2,678 percent (to 477,000 albums and songs, rounded to the nearest thousand) as compared to the previous week (17,000). Of the 477,000 total, album sales equaled 48,000 (up from just 1,000 the week previous), while song sales totaled 429,000 (an increase from 16,000 a week earlier).

In total, Michael/Wham! earned 103,000 equivalent album units during the tracking frame — a gain of 2,071 percent compared to the 5,000 units earned a week earlier.”

Chart Check [Billboard Hot 100]: The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ Bumped From #1

the-weeknd-starboy-thatgrapejuice-billboard-hot-100-1

As reported here, The Weeknd‘s ‘Starboy’ was behind Rae Sremmurd‘s #1 hit, ‘Black Beatles,’ on the Hot 100 for so long it actually tied the all-time record for most consecutive weeks at #2.  Finally, after a $.69 iTunes sale, the Daft Punk-assisted tune finally ascended to #1 last week, giving Weeknd his third chart-topper.

Now, as the refreshed Hot 100 reveals, that sale may have been just what the doctor ordered to get him to #1, but it damn sure wasn’t enough to keep him there.  For, after just 1 week of topping the tally, he’s already been ousted from its perch.

Curious to see who its new occupant is?  Tuck in below to see and also find out whom among your faves landed in this week’s new TGJ Chart Check:  Hot 100…

Chart Check [Hot 100]: The Weeknd Finally Ascends To #1 With ‘Starboy’

the-weeknd-starboy-thatgrapejuice-billboard-hot-100-1

Thanks to a $.69 “holiday sale” on iTunes, ‘Earned It’ singer The Weeknd (born Abel Tesfaye) has finally earned his third #1 single on the Hot 100.

14 weeks after its debut (and after a lengthy 8-week run at #2 behind rap duo Rae Sremmurd‘s smash single ‘Black Beatles’), ‘Starboy’ – the title track to Tesfaye’s third album (which hit #1 on the Billboard 200) – ascended to the tally’s perch on the wings of strong digital downloads and streaming performance.  Billboard reports:

[‘Starboy’ logged] the chart’s greatest week-over-week sales gain (up 28,000), surging by 49 percent to 86,000 downloads sold in the week ending Dec. 22. “Starboy” tops the Hot 100 after eight nonconsecutive weeks at No. 2, tying for the most weeks spent at No. 2 before leading the list. It matches Justin Bieber‘s “Sorry,” which ruled at last on the Jan. 23, 2016, chart, and OutKast‘s “The Way You Move,” featuring Sleepy Brown (Feb. 14, 2004).”

Congratz are certainly in order for Weeknd and his ‘Starboy’ co-stars Daft Punk.  The achievement marks the group’s first run at #1 in the U.S.

Chart Check [Billboard 200]: J. Cole Makes Streaming History With New Album ‘4 Your Eyez Only’

Rapper Dominates With 4th Consecutive Chart Topper

cole-thatgrapejuice-eyez-only

As we’ve previously indicated, now is a good time to be a guy named J. Cole.

Indeed, as if seeing his new album, ‘4 Your Eyez Only,’ conquer charts with a whopping 492,000 units moved wasn’t enough (the third largest figure of the year), he made history by seeing every song from the project crack the top 40.

Now, Billboard reports Cole has even more reason to celebrate:

4 Your Eyez Only also logs a big streaming week as it tallied 118,000 in SEA units (equaling 176.9 million streams of the album’s songs), which is the second-largest streaming debut ever for an album. It trails only the bow of Drake’s Views, which launched with 163,000 streaming units in its opening frame (equating to 245.1 million streams of songs from the album that week). 4 Your Eyez Only is just the third album to surpass 100,000 streaming equivalent album units in a single week, following Views and The Weeknd’s Starboy (with its opening frame of 117,000 in SEA units).

Chart Check [Hot 100]: Every Song From J. Cole’s New Album Hits Top 40

Rapper Takes Up 25% Of Top 40 By His Lonesome

cole-thatgrapejuice-eyez-only

It’s pretty safe to say now is a great time to be J. Cole.

The rapper, whose ‘surprise’ album ‘4 Your Eyez Only’ came with just a week notice, took no one by surprise when it topped the Billboard 200 with a monstrous figure.  However, we’re sure a few jaws dropped when perusers took a peek at the Hot 100 to see Cole’s name listed 10 times in the top 40 alone!  That’s right, every single song on the emcee’s newest opus simultaneously charted.  If that’s not enough, two cuts not featured on the official tracklist – ‘Fasle Prophets’ and ‘Everybody Dies’ – are also in the Hot 100.

The amazing feat puts him in the company of serial hitmakers The Weeknd, Beyonce, Drake, and Justin Bieber, all of whom have placed all of the content of their respective most recent albums in the Hot 100.

Chart Check [Hot 100]: The Weeknd’s ‘Starboy’ Charts All 18 of Its Songs

Canadian Crooner Only Fourth Artist To Achieve Historic Feat

starboy-thatgrapejuice-hot-100-new-album-weeknd

If you thought the chart domination of The Weeknd’s new album, ‘Starboy,’ was limited to the Billboard 200, you are sorely mistaken.

For, much like his fellow Canadian entertainer/‘Live For’ co-star Drake, The Weeknd – whose real name is Abel Tesfaye – has made history as the fourth artist (second male vocalist) to ever simultaneously place every song from one album on the Hot 100.

Billboard reports:

Additionally, all 18 songs from Starboy chart on the Hot 100; with 18 total tracks on the Dec. 17 chart, The Weeknd posts the second-most simultaneous entries in the Hot 100’s 58-year history; only Drake tallied more at the same time: 20 on the May 21 chart.

Chart Check [Billboard 200]: The Weeknd Nabs 3rd Biggest Opening Week of 2016 With ‘Starboy’

starboy-thatgrapejuice-weeknd-billboard-200

Thanks to an onslaught of promotional appearances that (to date) have included ‘SNL,’ The American Music Awards, ‘Ellen,’ the ‘Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,’ and European Music Awards, The Weeknd‘s third album, ‘Starboy,’ has not only lent his largest first week sales to date, but also gives him the third largest premiere of the year (only behind Drake‘s ‘Views’ and Beyonce‘s ‘Lemonade’).

Despite failing to meet initial predictions of 400,000 units moved, the singer’s handsome sum still gave him just enough to place him at #1 for this week’s Billboard 200.

Billboard reports:

The Weeknd blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart with his new album, Starboy, earning 348,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Dec. 1, according to Nielsen Music. Of the Weeknd’s overall start, 209,000 were in traditional album sales.

Starboy, the Weeknd’s second Billboard 200 No. 1, was released on Nov. 25 through XO/Republic Records and is the follow-up to his first leader, Beauty Behind the Madness. The new set was initially released commercially as a download and through streaming services. Its CD release followed three days later on Nov. 28.’

Chart Check [Billboard 200]: Bruno Mars’ ’24K Magic’ Opens at #2 With His Highest 1st Week Sales Ever

Singer Sees All of His Albums Impact Chart Simultaneously

24k-magic-thatgrapejuice-billboard-200-bruno

Bruno Mars certainly has the American Music Awards to thank for rubbing some of its magic on his newest album, ‘24K Magic.’

The opus, originally projected to sell as little as 110,000 its first week, surged in sales after his show-stopping set at the annual awards’ show.  Nearly doubling industry analysts’ predictions by the time its inaugural tallying week was over, the commercial performance of the project even saw Mars’ name added to history books due to buyer response on iTunes.

Finishing with his highest first week sales ever at 231,000 SPS (194,000 pure sales), Bruno-fever was so high his first two albums – ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans’ and ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ – both saw boosts in sales as well.  Tuck in below to find out where all three of his projects landed on this week’s refreshed ‘Chart Check’:

Chart Check [Billboard Hot 100]: Britney Spears’ ‘Slumber Party’ Makes Disappointing Debut

Sizzling Tune Slept On By Music Lovers

britney-tinashe-thatgrapejuice-billboard-hot-100

While the likes of Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande all saw impressive sales and streaming boosts post their American Music Awards performances (November 20), pop princess Britney Spears – whose latest single ‘Slumber Party’ was released the same weekend of the telecast – unfortunately cannot boast the same.

In fact, the hoopla around the awards is exactly what many are blaming for the failure of Spears’ otherwise highly anticipated release (featuring Tinashe).  And, just as we reported here, ‘Slumber’s worrying response on digital charts didn’t exactly spell hopeful for the ‘Glory’ gem.

Now, with the officially refreshed charts available, we’re saddened to report we were right. Tuck in below to find out where it and all of your other favorites from the day landed on this week’s refreshed TGJ Chart Check:
