Cover Star: Tion Phipps Performs Alicia Keys’ ‘Brand New Me’

This week’s That Grape Juice ‘Cover Star‘ comes from up-and-coming crooner Tion Phipps. Watch as the US native puts a brand new spin on ‘Brand New Me’ – the latest single from Alicia Keys’ hotly selling 5th LP ‘Girl On Fire’:

Kudos to Tion for his try at the emotional number. Showcasing a tonal quality similar to that of singers Lloyd and Justin Bieber, the 18-year-old was able to capture the sincerity of Alicia’s vocal performance while still putting his own spin on it.

We definitely give this one two thumbs up!

Cover Star: Jonnathan Molina Covers Christina Aguilera’s ‘Just A Fool’

This week’s That Grape Juice ‘Cover Star‘ comes from Youtube crooner Jonnathan Molina. Watch as the US native does double duty on Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton‘s hot duet ‘Just A Fool’ below:

Coming in as That Grape Juice‘s last ‘Cover Star’ of 2012, Molina certainly sends us into the new year with a bang. Covering any Christina Aguilera song is definitely a task, but the crooner put his own spin on the number – inserting his powerful vocals in just the right places without overdoing it.

Yes, the “shouty” parts of the song would certainly put a strain on any voice (let alone a male voice), but Molina definitely held his own. Overall, a good showing.

Cover Star: Shekia Renea Sings Tamar Braxton’s ‘Love & War’

This week’s That Grape Juice ‘Cover Star‘ comes from soulful Youtube fashionista Shekia Renea. Watch as the US native takes on the task of Tamar Braxton‘s soaring new single ‘Love & War’ below (begins @ :15):

Sweet! The multi-talented Renea certainly put her stamp on the Braxton number. Showcasing a supple alto (more vocally reminiscent of Tamar’s eldest sibling Toni), Renea was able to capture the emotion of the song while still able to inject her own style into the R&B ballad. All in all, great work!

~~Sing~~ Sang girls!! Indeed, to say that SChAE sang that would almost be an understatement to what the brought to the tune. Rolling across the song’s more challenging parts with ease, the trio (especially the lead songstress) certainly presented some voices to be reckoned with. Accompanied by flawless harmony, it’s safe to say that these girls truly are on fire!

Kudos to Karlos! The crooner kept it cool without depriving the songs of the bells and whistles that make it great. Where so many people overdo it is in their interpretation of the original singer’s runs/riffs, but Farrar didn’t go too far. Still managing to make the song his all the while…

Yes, yes, yes! Sarai smashed this.

A tricky song to sing (see: low register for verses, higher for chorus), not only did she “handle” it well, she mixed and moulded it into something of her own. Those adlibs were off the Richter! Great performance.

Cover Star: A. Fox Covers Aaliyah’s ‘Enough Said’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is A. Fox. Watch as the songstress takes on Aaliyah‘s Drake-assisted tune ‘Enough Said’ below:

Given the buzz about forthcoming music from late R&B superstar Aaliyah, it should come as no surprise that this week’s cover would be related.

With a tone somewhat reminiscent of Aaliyah’s ever-praised falsetto, Fox definitely succeeds in her attempt to convey the same emotion the late songstress was going for in ‘Said’. And it doesn’t hurt that Miss Fox also looked to dress the part as well.

Cover Star: Ebon Lurks Sings Chris Brown’s ‘Sweet Love’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Ebon Lurks. Watch as the young crooner take on Chris Brown‘s latest R&B hit ‘Sweet Love’ below:

Boasting a blend of Jason Mraz and Justin Bieber (vocally), Ebon puts an interesting pop twist on a very straightforward R&B cut. And, while not decorating the cut with the embellishments (runs, riffs) that Brown generally treats his tunes to, Lurks’ acoustic arrangement still managed to not take away from ‘Love’. Good showing!
