Cover Star: Sarai Sings Kelly Rowland’s ‘Ice’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is soulful songbird Sarai. Watch as the US native take on Kelly Rowland‘s latest single ‘Ice’ below:

Yes, yes, yes! Sarai smashed this.

A tricky song to sing (see: low register for verses, higher for chorus), not only did she “handle” it well, she mixed and moulded it into something of her own. Those adlibs were off the Richter! Great performance.

Cover Star: A. Fox Covers Aaliyah’s ‘Enough Said’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is A. Fox. Watch as the songstress takes on Aaliyah‘s Drake-assisted tune ‘Enough Said’ below:

Given the buzz about forthcoming music from late R&B superstar Aaliyah, it should come as no surprise that this week’s cover would be related.

With a tone somewhat reminiscent of Aaliyah’s ever-praised falsetto, Fox definitely succeeds in her attempt to convey the same emotion the late songstress was going for in ‘Said’.  And it doesn’t hurt that Miss Fox also looked to dress the part as well.

Cover Star: Ebon Lurks Sings Chris Brown’s ‘Sweet Love’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Ebon Lurks. Watch as the young crooner take on Chris Brown‘s latest R&B hit ‘Sweet Love’ below:

Boasting a blend of Jason Mraz and Justin Bieber (vocally), Ebon puts an interesting pop twist on a very straightforward R&B cut.  And, while not decorating the cut with the embellishments (runs, riffs) that Brown generally treats his tunes to, Lurks’ acoustic arrangement still managed to not take away from ‘Love’.  Good showing!

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Sarai. Watch as the US native take on Nicki Minaj‘s latest hit ‘RightBy My Side (ft. Chris Brown)’ below:

As much as we love us some Nicki, Roman, and all else embedded in Onika, singing clearly isn’t her strongest card. Hence, to hear this melody driven cut performed by a wholly capable vocalist (who, most importantly, was able to render it her own / see: adblibs), was refreshing. Very.

Cover Star: Shantee Tyler Sings Brandy & Monica’s ‘It All Belongs To Me’

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Shantee Tyler. Watch the singer, who was born in Germany, raised in Denver, and resides in Atlanta, tackle Brandy and Monica‘s recent duet ‘It All Belongs To Me’ below:

While not boasting the horse-power of the cut’s original performers, Shantee (who you may recognise from MTV’s Making The Band) turned in a wholly solid performance. Controlled, yet daring (see: applying her own adlibs), her rendition puts a fresh twist on the track. Good stuff.

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Nezanet. The Londoner serves up a stirring take on Kelly Rowland‘s R&B smash ’Motivation’.

Lyrics on the phone aside, Nez nailed this! Confident and controlled, she delivered a fresh take on a great song. Indeed, her adlibs were the variety we wish Rowland herself would dabble with more – both on record and live.

Great performance; the type the British industry would benefit from seeing much more of on our charts.
