Retro Rewind: Billboard Hot 100 This Week In 2004 #TBT

Destiny’s Child’s ‘Lose My Breath’ Ascends to Hot 100 Peak

thatgrapejuice-lose-my-breath-destinys-child-tbt

Readers of That Grape Juice know what avid music lovers we are – especially of hits past.

So, just as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’ allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we’ll take it back to Destiny’s Child mega comeback hit ‘Lose My Breath,’ the inaugural release from their last studio album ‘Destiny Fulfilled’ (2004).  With thunderous drums, slick horns, and an overdose of sass – the song, penned by Destiny’s Child, Rodney Jerkins, Jay Z, Sean Garrett, and Lashawn Daniels –  came as a booming announcement that music’s top group had returned with a vengeance.  Its video, as noted by critics, was exact in its purpose of demonstrating that a new “Destiny’s Child” had arrived. Long gone were the days of tacky matching outfits with girlish design and in its place were three learned women whose destiny had led them full circle. Whatever the message, it worked.

Anticipation of ‘Breath’ saw it debut in the top 30 of the Hot 100 before its physical release.  Shortly thereafter, the song skyrocketed to the #3 spot where it peaked this week 12 years ago.  Check below to see who joined them in the top 25 that week:

Slaying as ever, the duo looked stunning and, once again, have us salivating for a DC3 reunion.

It appears that folk will have not a wait a while before any such regrouping takes place.

Kelly is hard at work on her fifth studio album, Michelle is getting entrepreneurial hustle on with Believe At Home, and Beyonce is still working her ‘Lemonade’LP and rumoured to be readying a joint effort with Jay Z.

For now, though, peep more pics below…

Farrah Franklin Spills New Details On Destiny’s Child Departure: “They Lied”

 destinyschild-that-grape-juice-29101010101-101110

15 years have passed since the second version of the R&B group Destiny’s Child was rocked by controversy when its members came forward to claim they had cut ties with the singer Farrah Franklin.

Franklin, along with former Monica backing singer Michelle Williams, had been enlisted to replace members LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson during the promotional run for their sophomore set ‘The Writings on the Wall‘ but was fired after six months.

Management claimed her decision to miss a number of important promotional dates was the reason she was given the boot.

Alas, after the aforementioned Luckett and Roberson faced similar fates, Franklin has revealed that the story many of the group’s fans have believed for over a decade is a lie.

Details below…
