With the 2012 Grammy Award nominations set to be announced next month, buzz for the industry’s most prestigious night continues to intensify.
And though the noms are undeniably the main driver of the show itself, the list of label-submissions for each category makes for a compelling read.

The nominees for the 2011 Billboard Music Awards have been announced! Selected with regards to their performance on the Billboard charts during the period of February 28th 2010 to March 1st, the list of contenders is lead by the world’s most famous marketing ploy, Rihanna.
Nabbing 18 nominations, the earsore has even outpaced Eminem and Lady GaGa who earned 16 and 12 nods, respectively. Tune in to ABC on May 22nd at 8pm to see who walks away with the most trophies.

A record was broken this week on the Billboard 200 but it’s not the type of feat that artists would hope to achieve. With album sales continuing their downward spiral, even the music industry’s reigning chart titan, Taylor Swift, couldn’t make a big enough impact to save the day.
2011 has only just begun but things are already looking grim from the music industry. With whopping 8% decrease in album sales compared to the same week last year, artists from all genres experienced a rapid decline in their success at retail outlets. However, all is not lost.
Here is a new song from Eminem and Jazmine Sullivan. ‘Cocaine‘ was recorded during the rapper’s ‘Recovery’ sessions. Give it a listen below:
The Holdiay sales rush is finally over and with so many crazed shoppers abound almost every artist emerged as a winner. However, no other Urban act won a spot higher on the consumers’ Christmas list than Michael Jackson.
The King of Pop’s ‘Michael’ album remains the only Urban release in the Billboard 200′s top 5, slipping from #3 to #5 with sales of 150k units. This figure represents only a 34% decrease in sales, allowing Jackson to accomplish a narrow lead ahead of Jamie Foxx’s ‘Best Night of My Life’ which debuts at #6 on the lineup with 144k copies sold.
Keyshia Cole enters the top 10 this week at #9 with ‘Calling All Hearts’ selling 128k units. Still, the R&B singer’s call didn’t sway enough hearts to help her to outperform Nicki Minaj and Eminem whose albums sold another 133k (down 36% to #8) and 137k (up 100% to #7) copies, respectively.
Keri Hilson, on the other hand, missed the top 10 completely. While her ‘No Boys Allowed’ sold 102k copies, managing to outsell previously released ‘In A Perfect World’ by over 8k units, it failed to keep up with Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ which grabbed the #10 position. The Bajan’s LP experienced a 33% increase in sales, selling another 111k copies.
There is no sign of Ciara’s ‘Basic Instinct‘ in the top 20. Let us take a minute to backbend in silence as we mourn its passing.
Eminem and Lil Wayne hit the stage on the year-ending episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ last evening. The duo performed the songs ‘No Love’, ‘Won’t Back Down’ and ’6 Foot 7 Foot’ for the studio audience. Peep the action below:
