From The Vault: Ja Rule – ‘Down A*S Chick (Ft. Charli Baltimore)’

This week’s From The Vault selection comes from the year 2001 in the form of Ja Rule’s ‘Down Ass Chick’. The song features his then Murder Inc labelmate Charli Baltimore and was released as the 4th single off his ‘Pain Is Love’ album. A moderate hit, ‘Down Ass Chick’ peaked at  #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 and failed to match the success of the other songs released from the LP, all of which peaked in the top 10 of the chart.

O Ja Rule, why has the music industry forsaken thee? He had such an impressive voice and brought a unique sound to Hip-Hop. However, as we all know, 50 Cent put an end to that.

Nonetheless, it is amusing that while 50 accused Ja Rule of singing more than rapping, he himself has adopted the same approach with own records; doing more singing than rapping on many of his hits including ‘Candy Shop’ and ‘Magic Stick’. Now it looks like karma has finally caught up with 50 because he finds himself on the edge of irrelevancy like all the other artists he helped destroy.

From The Vault: Jennifer Lopez – ‘I’m Real (Murder Remix) (Ft. Ja Rule)’

Flashback to 2001 and Jennifer Lopez was the reigning queen of the music charts. One of the hits that made her domination undeniable was the Murder Remix of ‘I’m Real’ from her ‘J. Lo’ album of 2001. The track featured fellow has-been Ja Rule and held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 5 non-consecutive weeks.

However, the track was not without controversy. According to the song’s producer, Irv Gotti, Lopez was anything but real about how ‘I’m Real’ came into existence. Not only did she use the exact same sample for the original version of ‘I’m Real’ that Mariah Carey used for her song ‘Loverboy’ but Lopez also copied another Carey song for the remix. The Murder Remix of the record was specifically crafted by Gotti to sound exactly like Carey’s ‘If We (Ft. Ja Rule)’ in accordance with the instruction of Carey’s ex-husband Tommy Mottola who was supposedly trying to sabotage her career at the time. Hence, Lopez stole from Carey twice for the same song and started what would become a decade long feud. {Source}

Unoriginality aside, this was a great record and a monster hit. It’s astounding how the times have changed with both Lopez and Ja Rule’s more recent material being rejecting from the bargain bins across the globe. O well at least they could look back at their better years via Youtube.

Ashanti & Ja Rule Perform ‘Medley’ At VH1 Hip-Hop Honors

Former Murder Inc collaborators Ashanti and Ja Rule took to the stage at VH1 Hip-Hop Honors to perform a medley of their past hits. I enjoyed this for nostalgia and that alone; that aside, it was a little lacking in energy, however it was great to see that their relationship is on good terms again.

T-Boz Signs Solo Deal

tboz123 T Boz Signs Solo DealIt is being reported that former TLC star T-Boz has signed with SRC/Universal. The Grammy award winning star’s as yet untitled LP is set to feature production contributions from the likes of Polow Da Don, Dallas Austin and Raphael Saadiq. {Source}
I’ll sure be paying close attention to how this one shapes up; I remember T-Boz’s first foray into the solo field with ‘Touch Myself’ all those years ago. I’m finding myself wondering though: Is anyone really still checking for T-Boz?

Will you be checking for T-Boz’s solo effort?

Ashanti & Ja Rule Perform On Good Morning America

Ashanti performed on Good Morning America’s Summer Concert Series earlier today in support of her latest effort ‘The Declaration. As well as performing her single ‘The Way That I Love You’ (below), the 27 year old songstress reunited with former collaborator Ja Rule to perform a string of their hits. Good stuff.

Ciara Speaks On New Album & More

Our friends over at Real Talk NY caught up with R&B star Ciara at one of the stops on her 5 city 22nd birthday tour. The singer spoke on recording the follow-up to her Platinum-selling LP ‘Ciara: The Evolution’ as well as her futures goals and ambitions.

It’s a pretty interesting interview and she comes across really well. Considering I felt ‘The Evolution’ could have been much better than it was, I’m hoping she comes hard with her next project; I really see her as one of the few artists out now who has the potential to be great.

Ja Rule’s ‘Mirror’ Pushed Back

jarule Ja Rules Mirror Pushed Back It seems there’s no end to the album push back’s – the latest on the list being rapper Ja Rule. Check out the report below via Murder Inc Online:

MurderIncOnline can reveal that Ja Rule’s highly anticipated new album ‘The Mirror’ has been pushed back to 2008 with no confirmed release date. We contacted Irv Gotti to ask him the reason behind this set back and he told us that they have received ‘Sample clearance issues’ so therefor they had to push it back.

“Highly anticipated”? Ok then….So, would I be wrong in assuming that the poor performance of the album’s two singles had something to do with the delay? What I’m yet to understand is why it’s mainly the artists whose albums aren’t going to sell anyway that keep pushing their albums back. As cut-throat as it may sound, they should just release it and if it flops then keep it moving. SMH…

Ja Rule – ‘Body’ (ft. Ashely Joi)’ Video

The video for Ja Rule’s new single ‘Body’ premiered yesterday (September 20th) on BET. Considering Ja is attempting to restore his tattered career, this single/video is unlikely to generate any interest around his upcoming album ‘The Mirror (due November 13th). The vid is kinda ‘blah’ and doesn’t really go anywhere – the same will be the case for Ja’s career if he doesn’t fix up soon.

Ja Rule Comments Spark Controversy

jarule Ja Rule Comments Spark ControversyJa Rule was interviewed in the current issue of Complex Magazine. The rapper spoke on the Jena 6 controversy, politics, 50 Cent and homosexuality. Ja’s comments on the latter, inparticular, have caught the attention of the mainstream press – some of whom have branded Ja, real name Jeffrey Atkins, ‘homophobic’. Check out quotes from the interview below:

On Congress & Homosexuality:

“…They got my man Doug Morris under fire and shit, they got him going down to go speak to Congress about hip-hop lyrics, are you fucking serious? There’s a fucking black kid right now about to get 25 years for having a fight with some white kids over hanging the nooses over the white tree, lets get to that. Let’s get into shit like that, because that’s what’s tearing up America, not me calling a woman a bitch or a hoe on my rap songs. And if it is, then we need to go step to Paramount, and fucking MGM, and all of these other motherfuckers that’s making all of these movies and we need to go step to MTV and Viacom, and lets talk about all these fucking shows that they have on MTV that is promoting homosexuality, that my kids can’t watch this shit. Dating shows that’s showing two guys or two girls in mid afternoon. Let’s talk about shit like that! If that’s not fucking up America, I don’t know what is.”

On 50 Cent:

“That’s the difference people don’t understand. Everyone talks about the beef I had with 50; he has beef with all types of rappers, but I’m the only rapper who went and handled my business and went and hollered at him man to man… And the moment I heard he had a record about me, I knew where he resided, I knew where he hung out, I went and seen and him. “Homie, you have a problem with me? What’s happening? You ain’t got to rhyme about it, I’m right here in front of your face.” So that’s how our situation took place, and I handled my business with 50 and 50 knows that. That’s why I’m such a threat to him, that’s why he doesn’t like me so much.”

What’s your thoughts on Ja’s comments?

Ja Rule ‘Uh Oh’ (ft. Lil’ Wayne) Video

The timing of the debut of the ‘Uh Oh’ video is kinda suspect. With Ja Rule and Lil’ Wayne hitting headlines for their recent arrests, I’m thinking it may all be a publicity stunt to generate a buzz around the song. Whatever the case, such tactics may actually be needed as the video is sub-par at best. Though I’m feeling the song, the video just looks flat out cheap and by no means indicates it’s Ja’s comeback video. I seem to be one of the few holding out for a Ja resurgence, but he’s gonna have to come better than this.

Ja Rule & Lil’ Wayne Arrested

jarulelilwayne Ja Rule & Lil Wayne Arrested Rappers Ja Rule and Lil’ Wayne were arrested and charged with criminal possession of a deadly weapon yesterday in separate incidents which both took place in New York yesterday (July 22nd).
Ja Rule, real name Jeff Atkins, initially drew the attention of police officers when his luxury vehicle was stopped for speeding around 10.30pm. When the car was searched, a .40-caliber firearm was found. The ‘Mesmerise’ rapper as well as two other occupants of the vehicle were consequently arrested and charged.
Later in the evening, Miami-bred rapper Lil’ Wayne was arrested after police spotted him and another man smoking marijuana on a tour bus following a concert. When taken into custody and searched, a .40 pistol was found. Both were charged with criminal possession of a weapon and marijuana.
When will some of these rappers learn? It’s no wonder Hip Hop can’t catch a break these days.
