‘I’m Like A Bird’ belter Nelly Furtado gives a new meaning to ‘getting high’ on set of her new video ‘Big Hoops (The Bigger, The Better)‘.  The Canadian hitmaker is said to be readying the visual to accompany the lead single from her forthcoming new album - due summer 2012.

Certainly turning many-a-head in Los Angeles yesterday during the shoot, the songstress towered over extras and bystanders in the chic black outfit which concealed her frightening, heightening stilts.

Nelly Furtado Announces New Single

Nelly Furtado e1332611585581 Nelly Furtado Announces New Single

Believe it or not, 6 years have passed since Nelly Furtado‘s last English album.

Released June 7th 2006, ‘Loose‘- despite its blockbuster successes- saw Furtado retreat from the public eye once its campaign ended, much to the dismay of any who were hoping for the speedy release of its follow up.

Now, the wait is finally over.

Find out what the ‘Say It Right’ belle has been cooking up below…

After a six year absence from the charts, naturally there’d be air of nerves surrounding Nelly Furtado‘s new project. So, in order to put her best foot forward, the 32 year old has enlisted an all-star cast of hitmakers to craft hits for the set.

Soulful producer Salaam Remi is the latest to join the line-up, which currently includes Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins and Timbaland.

Nelly Furtado Readies ‘Loose’ Follow-up With Hitmaker

nelly furtado 9 Nelly Furtado Readies Loose Follow up With Hitmaker

It’s been almost 6 years since Nelly Furtado set the charts ablaze with her career-defining album ‘Loose’. Produced almost entirely by Timbaland, the 2006 set churned out hit after hit, etching the words ‘Promiscuous’ and ‘Maneater‘ into Pop consciousness.

And then it went silent.

Furtado spent the years following raising her daughter and releasing Spanish material.

However, the wheels are finally a-turning for the singer’s return to the English speaking charts. And this time she’s enlisted help of a noted hitmaker.

Timbaland, Nelly Furtado And Soshy Perform ‘Morning After Dark’

Timbaland, Nelly Furtado and Soshy made a stop on last evening ‘Tonight Show with Conan O’Brian’. The trio performed their new single ‘Morning After Dark’ which will appear on Timbalands highly anticipated ‘Timbaland Presents Shock Value II’. The LP hits stores on December 8th.

Good performance. Nelly looked sexy in that tight outfit and the band was jamming. However, am I the only one who’s noticed how much weight Timbaland has gained? I hope he manages to get himself in gear because with the rigorous schedule that normally defines album promotion, it will be difficult for him to effectively perform on stage. It’s clear that he has some stamina issues already as is evident by his overuse of a backtrack and stiff movements. Get it together Timbaland.

Thoughts?

2007 MTV VMA: Performances

*MTV / Dailymotion are on a rampage removing the vids. Keep checking back as the links will continue to be updated*

Timbaland (ft. Justin Timberlake & Nelly Furtado) – Medley
Kanye West (ft. T-Pain) – Good Life

Rihanna – Shut Up & Drive

Alicia Keys – No One / Freedom

50 Cent & Justin Timberlake – Ayo Technology

Chris Brown – Wall to Wall, Umbrella & Kiss Kiss

Britney Spears – Gimme More

Nicole Scherzinger – Whatever You Like (Pre-Show)

Terrible. This basically sums up 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. I was already sceptical about the show considering the so-so line-up of performers, but it was a complete mess.

Setting the tone for the night was opener Britney Spears. With all that’s gone on, I was hoping she’d silence the naysayers, but this was a complete and utter and trainwreck. A combination of poor lipsyching, stiff choreography and an outfit that revealed her out of shape body, Britney’s performance will no doubt have many saying her career is over. It will be if she doesn’t find a way to redeem herself from that mess.

Most of the night’s other performers offered little of interest. Although I must give Rihanna props for doing her thing during Chris Brown’s so-so performance and later on during ‘Shut Up & Drive’.

The show wasn’t all bad, though. Alicia Keys’ performance was a standout. She nailed ‘No One’, making me like the song all the more. I wasn’t initially all that hyped for her performance, but she was definitely the highlight of what was a mediocre night (at best).

MTV really need to step it up and the show has been on a downward spiral for years. I was thinking it was all award shows, but the BET Awards this year really showed out – beating this mess hands down. SMH…

What do you think of the performances?

Alicia Keys Joins VMA Line-Up

 Alicia Keys Joins VMA Line UpR&B star Alicia Keys has been added to the list of performers at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards. The Grammy Award winning singer is slated to perform her new single ‘No One’ at the Las Vegas event. Keys joins previously announced performers 50 Cent, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Common, Nelly Furtado, Akon, Soulja Boy, T-Pain and Cee-Lo (of Gnarls Barkley). {Source}
Though Alicia always delivers with her performances, I can’t say I’m too hyped about this one. I like ‘No One’, but can’t help but feel she could have come a bit harder than she did with that track. Still, with the line-up kinda lacking any performers of real interest, Alicia is good addition.

Any thoughts?

New Music Videos

Lloyd – Get It Shawty

Unsure about this one. The track is ok but the video is kinda bland. It should do well, though, off the back of his last single ‘You’ which hit #1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop chart.

Lumidee (ft. Tony Sunshine) – She’s Like The Wind

Although I didn’t think I would, I’m liking this one. Maybe its because she’s rapping instead of attempting to sing (like before). Video is pretty much your standard R&B vid – nothing more, nothing less. One question though: Why does the feature artist appear more on the track than she does?

Timbaland (ft. Nelly Furtado & Justin Timberlake)

Not liking this one at all. The video is cheap as anything and I just can’t get into the track. Nelly’s voice- which I usually don’t mind- is really nasal and annoying. Then again, it might just be me…I can’t get past the idea that the song is supposedly taking shots at two artists I respect – Prince and Janet.

News Tidbits: Fantasia, Chart News, Jennifer Holiday

fant1 News Tidbits: Fantasia, Chart News, Jennifer HolidaySeason 3 American Idol winner Fantasia will be making an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show. Scheduled for sometime later this month, lets hope Tasia’s appearance helps the sales of her self-titled latest album. Released this past December, Soundscan shows it to have only sold 285,000 copies in total. Not good, especially when it was one of the better albums released last year.
In Billboard chart news, Nelly Furtado has scored her 2nd #1 single on the Hot 100 Chart- ending Beyonce’s 10 week reign with Irreplaceable. Her single Say It Right jumps #2-#1 this week. Congratulations to both of them; Nelly Furtado was largely considered a one-hit wonder this time last year and people been doubting Beyonce – me included.
Whilst Jennifer Hudson continues to garner praise for her role in the Dreamgirls movie, it has just been announced that the original Effie (from the Broadway show) – Jennifer Holiday will be performing the song she made famous ‘And I Am Telling You’ on E!’s Oscar Pre-Show. I personally can’t wait for this, she is a vocal power-house and tears it down each time she performs the song. Be sure to check it out.
