2016 Year In Review: Academy Awards Nominate No Actors of Color…Again (#OscarsSoWhite)

Scribbled in history books for some good and not-so-good reasons, 2016 brought with it some of modern entertainment’s most memorable moments.

As the year draws to a close, TGJ is reflecting on 31 moments that rocked – and to some degree shaped – the Urban and Pop musical landscape as we know it.

Next, we remember how the Academy Awards forgot to nominate actors of color for its 2016 class:

Report (January 2016):

Not a single actor or actress of color received a nomination in any of the in the four main acting categories. This despite 20 slots in total being up for grabs.

The revelation will only serve to fuel movements such as the #OscarsSoWhite cause, which calls for greater diversity from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Publicly, the body has made some effort to make the membership more inclusive – inviting 322 new members this past Summer; adding the likes of ‘Selma’ star David Oyelowo, and ”Compton’ director F. Gary Gray into their mix.

The news above prompted a call for boycott by actress Jada Pinkett-Smith and her Academy Award-nominated husband Will Smith (click the pic to read more):

The result of the hoop-la?  The ‘Academy Awards’ telecast hit a serious sour note in ratings, its lowest in nearly a decade.

Here’s hoping 2017 yields better results.

I will probably get killed of as a racist here. Even tho I am not a one. But maybe they wont nominate people of color because simply once again white actors did just a little better?
Should they give oscars to ppl just because they are black, or maybe gay? Let’s be real here.
All people can be so damn talented, but this is just an award. And to the people behind the oscar some were better than others.
I don’t get all that white oscar shi*.
Black people are human, white people are human, LGBT people are human. And guess what? There is so many humans nominated by the academy. I really don’t think it’s racist.
The show is like a competition. If they thought some were better – well it’s their job. They have made the decision.

Blaques always feeling them selfs way to much.

      • Jasmine December 21, 2016

STFU and whites don’t feel superior.

    • Jasmine December 21, 2016

STFU! Your comments are racist whether despite your claims that you are ignorant to the meaning. You are saying that black stars and black movies are inferior in acting to white movies. Here are some examples of black movies and stars that did well at the box office and received great reviews from critics but were totally robbed of a nomination:

Michael B. Jordan (Actor) – Creed
      Ryan Coogler (Director) – Creed
Straight Outta Compton – Total Snub
Beasts of No Nation (Cary Fukunaga)
Beasts of No Nation (Idris Elba)

You’re delusional if you think the Academy was going to nominate ANYTHING by Netflix. Netflix is basically flipping off the movie industry by streaming their movies while they’re in theaters. The Academy doesn’t like them fu cking with theaters like that.

No shade no tea I’m being super honest when asking this, but were there any black films that came out this year? And if so did they come out before the dead line?

If you mean this year as in 2016 for the 2017 Oscars then Fences and Moonlight are the big ones. Moonlight is guaranteed an Oscar nomination at this point. Depending on how it does against La La Land at the Golden Globes, it might go on to win Best Picture as well.

Can jada protest the Grammy performances as well, we are tired of the Grammy producers saying that some rb acts are not invited to perform because that’s not their vision/direction of how they want the show to go, well we are tired of always seeing performances from beyonce jay z rihanna Alicia keys, kanye west Nicki minaj, Bruno mars, usher, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor swift, 5th harmony, demi lovato, Justin beiber, Justin Timberlake, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, little mix, chain smokers, maroon 5, Adam Levine, pharell,Adele,Sam Smith,Ariana grande,Meghan train or, john legend, Rita Ora, Andrea day,.. Like where are all the up and coming Rb stars that need a platform to perform their music, especially wrist who released albums this year, like where is real Rb soul music artist, like chrisette Michelle, k michelle tweet, jazmine Sullivan, fantasia, Luke James, mya, monica, Kerry hilson just a few to name, and then y’all get these white artist to perform who we never heard of, who comes out of left field somewhere…there are no unity with the artist of today, back in the day artist would be singing together white and black,
Back in the day you had two artist win a Grammy for the same category because it was a tie..Grammy’s need more authentic establishing Rb acts to perform, beyonce rihanna and all of the mainstream artist already made it

    • JustCoastWitHa December 21, 2016

it seems like they got the R&B noms correct this year. Hopefully Solange gets to perform.

  4. steve December 21, 2016

Nominations are based on certain criteria. If you merit it then you get nominated. Let’s not make it a thing of colour.

    • Dawn December 21, 2016

Why are there more white artist and bands who are invited to perform at the grammys than people of color other than the black artist they always call on to perform and showcase their artistry, talent is talent, it’s too many politics and they want high ratings, im sure the ratings would sky rocket if they granted a wider variety of artist of color, then everyone at home could see artist on the grammys that they connect with, or like…the way things are going we will never have full equality

      • OMG Logic!!! December 21, 2016

That’s what the Latin Grammys are for. Black people are over represented at the regular Grammys. Remember they are only 13% of the population.

  5. December 21, 2016

this is getting annoying now, they all attack wills wife because she said something the last time, and they claim it’s because will didn’t get a nomination, that is a part of the reason, yes, but the bigger picture is black actors hardly get nominated for this thing.

  6. Wonder Woman December 21, 2016

But but but….. Moonlight has the highest score this year 99% on Metacritic 98% On RT so……..snub it is

    • OMG Logic!!! December 21, 2016

Academy Award nominations aren’t even out yet… This post is about last February.

  7. S****** Blonde December 21, 2016

All those white actors pictured above are very talented, what about that?

  8. LmfaoHoe December 21, 2016

F*** the Oscars and Grammys too. We dont need their validation of our talents, Idk why Will, Jada, Oprah, Tyler Perry, Lee Daniels, Spike Lee, Debra Lee, Jay Z, Russell Simmons, Denzel, Jamie Foxx, Angela Bassett, ect don’t just their money all together and create our own club/award show. I’m tried of hearing Blacks asking whites for approvals and s***, f*** em lets do us as we have always anyways. The Oscars and Grammays are racists and bigots. Afraid the black performers gonna top the whites in singing, dancing, acting, ect. Yet have no problem of us sitting in the audience f*** thzt I wouldnt attend s***.

  9. 2bad2bme December 21, 2016

The reason is because the WHITE people who rate and vote the best movies can not relate to BLACK films because they don’t understand our sense of humor nor culture (unless it’s about slavery or being extra ratchet i.e. “Precious”). Black people, regardless of how well they act, are not believable to them playing in sophisticated movies. So the only films they can relate to and find them realistic are the white movies. There, All summed up now!

    • OMG Logic!!! December 21, 2016

A lot of assumptions for someone complaining about a group of people assuming things…

      • 2bad2bme December 21, 2016

Shut up. The black folks who are in the professional acting business (Hollywood) has said the exact same thing. So look up assumption and come back to the comment section and reason with what you read!

  10. @ASAPicon December 21, 2016

After reading these comments in here, I’ve become very disappointed. Disappointed that the point is clearly being missed by so many! The point is that the academy needs to get with the times and start the inclusion of diversity. Awards aren’t handed to people but atleast recognize the many great black films that are released annually. White people are the only ones making movies. This also isn’t just about BLACK &a WHITE People, sometimes this western world view is so tunnel visioned that we don’t recognize there are more people included when we say “People Of Color”!

Didn’t I just read an article that the British film awards or something will start fining the companies for not diversifying their categories??? Idk.

But people stop missing the bigger picture.
As Viola Davis said “Provide the opportunities and resources for non-white people to be great, and they will be” or something to that affect. She was basically saying there are not many opportunities for non white people to even be recognized for their work on a larger scale. So start investing in diversity!

  11. JanStan December 21, 2016

Why don’t black people just start their own awards show then? They Stan for their faves to the gods then don’t hold them accountable when they pay the essence or BET awards dust. More white people go to see movies like 12 years a s**** than black people do but heaven help me if Ride Along or Barbershop don’t make a boat load more money.

    • OMG Logic!!! December 21, 2016

Watch Black people pay a masterpiece like Moonlight total and utter dust. It’ll be one of the movies of the year/decade and garbage like Madea’s Boo! and Kevin Hart’s awful movies will completely eclipse it.

More Black people need to get out and watch quality Black cinema to prove that real Black stories have a place in the American market.

      • JanStan December 21, 2016

Well said. Quality black Cinema definitely has a place in the American market, it’s unfortunate that it’s only white people that think so. Then the black community becomes all furious when actors and movies that they didn’t even support themselves don’t get nominated. So basic.

  12. Starxavi December 22, 2016

Well all I know is that they are not gonna be able to deny actors of color this year. With movies like Lion, Moonlight, Hidden Figures, and Fences, if there are no actors of color nominated then we truly TRULY have something to be upset about.

    • JanStan December 22, 2016

Actually only people who see those movies have something to be upset about. I’m guess that box office for those films will be 10% from black audiences at most (for Hidden Figures) and at most 3% for the others.
