‘Black-ish’ creator Kenya Barris most recently made headlines for a highly publicized departure from ABC, which was followed by the signing of a multi-million dollar Netflix deal.  But, before he brings his exclusive content to the streaming service, he reportedly sold ABC a reboot of classic television comedy series, ‘Bewitched’…with a twist.

Report:

“In Bewitched, written by Barris and Taylor, Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.”

The project is helmed by Barris and writer/producer Yamara Taylor.  As of time reported, no casting announcements or tentative premiere date have been revealed.

Do some new s***. I can’t with all these reboots just to change the characters. Make new and creative shows with a variety of characters. That’s what people want and what they accept. Most of the people are totally ok with diverse actors, they simply don’t want all those reboots just for diversity‘s sake.

There is really no creativity these days. Reboots in Cinema, reboots in tv. Boring

Name a new concept. It’s all been done. That’s why they are doing reboots.

I love the old Bewitched, but I don’t like the premise of this new one. In the original, Samantha’s powers were only limited by Darren, not by any external factors. The core question is why would the new Sam have to be hardworking when her powers can influence any situation. One interesting twist could be Sam’s age. In the original, she was hundreds of years old. If that’s true in the reboot, she would have been a black woman in a world that was much more brutal than our world today.

Why not do a reboot with a black family but with a different constraining factor? Perhaps Samantha’s powers come with some sort of limit, or maybe she has to keep her true identity hidden from her husband for some reason.
