Retro Rewind: Prince & Oprah Winfrey Attend Black Panther & Storm’s Wedding

Published: Saturday 17th Nov 2018 by David

Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ feature carved out to celebrate TV and Film’s epic past.

Today, we honour the union of Marvel’s Black Panther and Storm as fans look forward to news regarding a movie set to tell the latter’s layered story.

Meet us below…

Storm, despite being Black Panther’s wife (or ex-wife now), did not appear in the superhero’s 2018 cinematic story because the rights to her character are owned by Disney’s rival Fox.

For this reason, many who saw the Chadwick Boseman-fronted movie may not be aware that she features prominently in his life and once ruled as the queen of Wakanda.

Here’s what happened.

In 2005 Marvel Comics published a story named ‘Decimation‘ in which a large number of mutants are drained of their powers as a result of a dramatic storyline built around The Scarlet Witch.

A despondent Storm decides to part ways with Professor Xavier and his X-Men and flies to Wakanda to visit her childhood sweetheart T’Challa (Black Panther).

Once there, the friends reunite romantically and announce that they are to wed and do so in the September of 2006 as part of the fourth volume of the ‘Black Panther’ comics story.

In attendance? BET‘s Toure & Amanda, Shuri, Jessica Jones, The Clintons, Nelson Mandela, Luke Cage, Spider Man, Wolverine, Oprah Winfrey and Prince…to name just a few.

Unfortunately, the pair’s union wasn’t to last as it was shattered by the fact that they were forced to stand on opposing sides of the Avengers vs X-Men war which led them to announce their separation and Storm back into the arms of her none other than Wolverine.

Dramatic stuff, eh?

With all of this in mind…

Are you looking forward to the Storm movie?

Yasss!!! Totally here for a storm movie! It will be the epitome of black girl magic!! This NEEDS to happen. But we would need a very strong female lead, I would love to see Issa Rae or Teyana Taylor.. or they can even bring back Halle ??‍♂️.. honestly I know I’m in the minority with this one but I could even see Bey SLAYING this role! And I know the box office numbers would be RECORD BREAKING with her!

Angela Bassett would have been perfect but she’s already black panther’s mom.

        All too old.

Issa Rae would not be a good storm or would Teyanna Taylor. I think it would be good to have someone young and fresh kinda liKD what they did with Spider man. The actor was unknown. I think Yara Shahadi would be a good fit.

This was a rush job done only to give storm an official “Queen” title and they hoped it would make people want to read Black Panther. Prior to this Storm was only in a few relationships Wolverine and Forge being the most prominent ones. Over time the two really did do well in stories of Avengers, Black Panther, and Fantastic Four (filling in for Reed and Sue). Honestly I preferred her with Forge (who is of Native American descent) because of how much history they had.

So storm a ho and of course Hollywood would make her run to a white man.

Of course that’s what Hollywood does :/

    Halle Berry >>> Alexandra Shipp

I honestly doubt the Storm movie can even work w/ Alexandra Shipp as the lead. She just doesn’t seem like a strong lead to me. I would’ve said Tessa, but she’s already in Thor’s universe as Valkyrie. Maybe Simone Missick, Ryan Destiny, or even Janelle Monae…but not Alexandra ?

Sam, I appreciate you so much for publishing this! Here’s to hoping that Storm is introduced in the Black panther sequel.
