‘American Idol’ Revival: NBC & FOX In Fierce Bidding War

Published: Thursday 30th Mar 2017 by Sam

Viewers have only just waved goodbye to ‘American Idol,’ but it appears they’ll be saying hello (again) very soon.

Full story below…

News hit the wire early this year that the production company behind the talent show were shopping a reboot.

And, as is customary in showbiz, things are moving at lightening speed.

Per TMZ, both NBC and FOX are in a fierce bidding war to air the new incarnation of ‘Idol.

Given that it just wrapped last year, what’s the incentive?

According to the report, Idol would solve a pressing issue for NBC and their own singing competition ‘The Voice.’

Currently airing two cycles a year, there’s the internal feeling that they are over-saturating the market. What’s more, key judge Adam Levine – who has appeared on every single season since 2011 – is said to want to only do one per year moving forward.

Perhaps most interesting, though, is FOX’s rationale.

Having aired the original Idol for 15 seasons, insiders say the only reason they allowed it to bow out was because of the increasingly colossal cost attached to the judging panel (i.e the likes of Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and J.Lo).

Word now is that any such revival wouldn’t feature previous panelists. Put simply, an altogether less expensive cast would be assembled.

*************

For us, we’d much prefer all this effort went into conceiving a new format for a new show.

But the reality is that even if Idol returns with a smaller audience, it’s a sizeable franchise that has produced stars still active and relevant today. All of which points to it being a safer bet for execs.

That said, would you be here for the return of ‘American Idol’?

Your thoughts?

LEAVE IT ALONE! I honestly cannot name one winner or viable success story beyond Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood & Jennifer Hudson. I began watching the series when it first premiered — when it was solely about the TALENT and promise of a real, successful music career for the crowned winner.

The series has been watered down now to simply focus on the notoriety of the “big name” judges panel, as well as the foolery of the contestants during the audition process.

The fact that the series lost significant viewership year after miserable year between 2011-2015 should be reason enough for producers to simply let the series remain in the vault.

These reality talent competitions are a waste of everyone’s time — the contestants, the viewers and producers. NO ONE who has won any of them within the past decade goes on to become anything beyond a “successful” soundcloud or youtube artist. People arent taking these careers seriously & the average music consumer certainly isn’t buying the crap singles and rushed albums that are released by the “winners”

I am soooo SICK and tired of television networks rebooting age old programs instead of using their creativity to come up with new, innovative ideas. LORD!

I do think it is soon to already talk about bringing it back I mean it should have just taken an off season.

THat said it is a part of my childhood so I would Ben wee for it.

Least they actually find talented winners who saw success unlike the voice.

Has the Voice managed to produce a single successful artist??? I don’t understand how they air two seasons of that 5h1t every year.

These shows don’t produce superstars anymore. Why watch. Why not just have a show for independent artist to promote their music.

Yeah let it be where it was
The last time I watched was Mariah & Nicki season I think 2013 and that was for Mariah iconic shade mainly (though I did love me some Candice Glover)

Like was said ain’t no one going to match
Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood Jennifer Hudson

If it is coming back it has to be about the talent and not the judges and also a completely different format and angle

^I ageee the format is just tired. “Let it go” like Frozen.

  14. eric March 30, 2017

I don’t want it back. The judging was oftentimes dishonest, and the winner is rarely interesting. It’s more about ratings and entertainment than actual singing, so no thanks.

People are not interest in anymore so it best to leave it alone for good and don’t bring it back not a good idea period
