FOX To Reboot ‘Showtime at the Apollo’ As Weekly Series

Just as rumors about the reboot of juggernaut reality singing competition series, ‘American Idol,’ were laid to rest last week, the show’s network home – FOX – has announced its intent to revive another historic talent show:  ‘Showtime at the Apollo.’

As we reported here in October 2016, Steve Harvey (the series’ host from 1993-2000) joined FOX for an ‘Apollo’ special.  Fast forward months later, that venture was so well received the network has opted to restore it to a weekly, hourlong showing.  Set to kick off later this year, tuck inside for all the details:

“We all had such a blast on the two specials that aired earlier this season, that we thought it really deserved being a weekly event,” said Harvey. “But our mission is a little different this time around. Instead of just putting on a great show, we’re going to do that and find the next great comic and the next big music star. That’s what the Apollo is all about. My roots are on that stage and I can’t wait to be there every week, looking for great talent. Who said you can’t go back home again?”

Much like the original ‘Apollo Amateur Night,’ the series will be a live talent competition that provides a platform for up and coming comedians, poets, singers, dancers, and more as well as give some of the biggest stars in music and comedy a chance to show off their hits and talent.

Executive-produced by Jim Roush and Chris Wagner for the Roush-Wagner Company, Reginald Hudlin and James McKinlay also will serve as showrunners while Don Weiner will direct the series.  Fans can expect the series to premiere later this year.
