Kelly Rowland is cultivating a talent-search with a twist.

Christened ‘Chasing Destiny,’ the BET series will see the 34-year-old journey across the US to piece together music’s next big girl group.

Ms. Kelly has teamed up with industry renown choreographer Frank Gatson to achieve the goal. As widely reported, Gatson has creatively shepherded the careers of Destiny’s Child, Beyonce, and En Vogue.

Now, with the New Year nigh, more details about the show’s arrival have been uncovered.

More below…

Billboard confirms that ‘Chasing Destiny’ will debut April 5th 2016 at 10pm on BET.

The season will consist of ten hour-long episodes and take on the form of a docu-series rather than an out-and-out reality show (think ‘Making The Band’ rather than The X Factor).

How did the idea for Chasing Destiny come about?

This was my and Frank’s idea. We were going to do this whether TV cameras were with us or not. We were going to have our own cameras. But after talking to Stephen (BET president of programming Hill), he said he’d like to be a part of the show. I was just happy that he saw how necessary a girl group is just as much as we do. Because there’s only only one out there now, Fifth Harmony.

Why are girl groups still necessary?

One of the things I loved about being in Destiny’s Child was little girls seeing us travel together, sing together, talk together, hang out together. It shows camaraderie, friendship and to me that’s missing. This is such a selfie-absorbed society. We need to see more of girls getting along. It’s not just about being an individual. You need friends to depend on. And I need these young ladies to know that still exists. And if they can see that in a group… that is the ultimate goal.

What’s surprised you the most at the auditions?

Just how many girls want to be in a group. Like today, I saw this one girl, who needs it. It’s not about for her talent as much as it is for her spirit. That’s what Destiny’s Child did for me. My mom was a nanny and we moved from place to place. For me, being in a group was stability. That was something I needed in my world. So it’s not just about what we can possibly do for these girls but what these girls can possibly do for themselves — and changing the rest of their lives.

From this point, what are the next stages in the quest?

This is the overall audition. Then the next stage is grooming, while also further narrowing down the number of females. We have so many right now, but it’s exciting. And to be honest, we’ve been playing some of this by ear.

This is not orchestrated. It’s something we’re allowing to happen organically. That’s the way it should happen. We haven’t put a particular age on this, a certain look or sound. It’s just going to happen. And drama’s going to happen naturally, too. I remember the producers asking if I’m planning anything. I’m not planning nothing because the public already has that show. This is a real journey.

Sounds both promising and exciting.

When we think talent-searches, ‘Making The Band’ continues to hold a special place in our hearts. Not only because it birthed Danity Kane (R.I.P), but it – more than any ‘Idol’ or ‘X Factor’ after it – really showcased the process of what goes into making a credible group. The rehearsal, the refinement, the resilience.

By all accounts, ‘Chasing Destiny’ seems to be building on that foundation for the modern era and ultimately has us buzzed because of that. What’s more, both Rowland and Gatson make for great TV, so folk are most likely in for an entertaining ride.

Of course, being the industry enthusiasts we are, we’re wondering if there’s a label attached, if there’ll be music releases attached, so on and so forth. But we imagine all of that will become apparent in the coming months.

Good times!

These made for tv groups never work out. What a waste. She should have gotten a sitcom instead.

The problem with talent competitions is the contestants usually arent good enuff to make it on their own… as long as thats true the show will always be bigger than the group. I find it interesting they pitching this 10 whole years after DC broke up. I see a DC reunion might be on the way, theyre performance earlier this year was epic… michelle was giving me VOCALS!!!!

Making the band was epic. I like that concept. And if anyine has seen Kelly Rowland on Xfactor trust me this will be exstremely entertaining. Kelly will bring the sassy and sillyness and I know frank will obviously be the funny person who puts up with nobody’s b*******. I think everyone should tune in and give it a chance.
