Love & Hip-Hop Miami: Homophobia Erupts On Social Media After Launch Of Gay Storyline

Published: Tuesday 16th Jan 2018 by Sam

When That Grape Juice spoke with ‘Love & Hip-Hop’ creator Mona Scott Young, she promised that the Miami branch of the franchise would be bringing something new to the table.

And, after just three episodes, it’s clear she meant it.

Indeed, viewers have observed a different aesthetic, different sound, and different storylines. The latter of which includes the playing out of a gay love triangle – between rapper Bobby Lytes (Trina’s cousin), Jeffrey, and Malik.

The move, which some have hailed as brazen for depicting more variety as pertains to gay men, has generated critique from some corners of the net. Namely homophobes.

See what we mean below…

Taking to Twitter, a series of problematic tweets flooded the platform. Case in point:

Not all shared this sentiment, though. There were more positive responses (though some remained cautious):

I’m liking love & hip hop Miami. The gay storyline doesn’t bother me. The only thing I’m not a fan of Bobby. Something about him comes off entitled, brat and thinks he’s the s*** because he’s related to Trina.

Black america always having issues with Gay and Lesbian, but will Cheat, Lie, Steal, Kill, Shoot, Fight, Blog, Stan, Swear etc…… love all people gay or straight or mind your damn business

      • Kenhern January 16, 2018

First of all I said on the I have no issue with the gay story line. I’m a gay male, I never mentioned I had an issue with it, I’m actually instresed with where it’s going. I’m just saying I don’t like Bobby because his attitude, he seems like a brat and is trying to make a Career off Trina and not his own artistry. I do not have an issue that he’s gay. Please do not put words in my mouth

bobby is extra for no reason. sorry dude, being someone’s cousin doesn’t mean you’re entitled to their time, energy, and resources.

Black America still as backwards as ever then.

    • Lester January 16, 2018

Same thing I said but I got attacked lol ? even though I’m black just from Sweden.

      • S****** Blonde January 16, 2018

      • S****** Blonde January 16, 2018

Malmö is the worst city of Sweden, sorry, lol…I love Copenhagen though, I have family there.

    • Caleb January 16, 2018

  3. Ajm265 January 16, 2018

This is why we as black people suffer still…. the oppress mimick their oppressors….. such ignorance …… I’m sure these are the people who were upset by the coolest m***** t shirt

  4. Mami January 16, 2018

I have no problem with the storyline…i do have a problem when it cones off too scripted & I’m just NOT a fan of that bobby dude.

  5. S****** Blonde January 16, 2018

Most of the homophobic comments are made by women, some women are even more homophobic than straight men, it’s nice to see young black men live their lives so openly.

    • Caleb January 16, 2018

It’s probably because women watch these shows a lot more than men.

  6. BootzShza January 16, 2018

Your kids are watching Love & Hip Hop because it’s family friendly? Really? So you’re more upset about two guys kissing and not about the multitude of men who cheat on the show or women snatching hair and throwing drinks? Really?? Really??? #ignorant #caveLife

    • Xanadu January 16, 2018

      preach!!!!!!

  7. Bravo!! January 16, 2018

Now, Someone needs to ask the straight dudes who made comments, how many t***** or draq queens they played with!?

  8. DS January 16, 2018

These dumasses can change the channel since they are on such a moral high ground. We’ve seen strippers, full on fist fights, court hearings, baby momma paternity drama, and everything else on this franchise. LHH without gay folks isn’t exactly family hour tv, so this shouldn’t be the deciding factor.

  9. Allure Searles January 16, 2018

I like the love and hip hop Miami it’s hot I don’t however care the gay scenes I have seen enough of it I do not like Bobby he acts too crazy on the show

  10. SMH January 16, 2018

    Yawn.

  11. Pedro January 16, 2018

Why are you kids watching Love & Hip Hop? This is not a show for kids! Your kids can’t see two men kissing, but can watch all that druging/cursing/sexing/fighting/cheating scences… Ok

  12. Dionysusd January 16, 2018

What kills me are the ones saying they don’t want their kids to see it. WHY THE HELL ARE YOUR KIDS WATCHING LOVE AND HIP HOP

  13. My opinion January 16, 2018

Well I am black and I am very tired of seeing this gay ish all over our TV screen! I want to watch a show w/out seeing two men kissing idc if they are black or white, I stopped watching Scandal, and Empire when they started w/the gay storyline’s. It’s too much.

    • SuxMyCockiness =o January 16, 2018

Maybe you should build a time machine and go back to the 1950s. I’m sure you’ll be comfortable there ?

  14. King B January 16, 2018

Most of these hate comments are coming from females. Sorry your p****** aren’t popping and losing your men to other men. Step your game up

  15. Belladonna January 16, 2018

F*ck homophobia and anyone who feels that way. Sidenote Do people still watch reality Television? Lol With so much good tv – Game of Thrones,Stranger Things,Black Mirror,Ozark, The Crown, 13Reasons Why,DearWhitePeople,She’s Gote to have it, Being Mary Jane, The HandMaids Tale. The list goes on people. Lol

    • Caleb January 16, 2018

Sadly a lot of people watch “reality television” trash. That’s what cable mostly is these days.

  16. Jacob January 16, 2018

Straight people always have issues with Gay culture ,but forgetting, that every designer piece of fabric they want to endure was created by a gay person and hair stylist and make artist that makes them enhance their look is by a gay person….we make y’all lil b**** for you too look good for your husband or boyfriend that’s cheating on you with me

  17. Cbeylive January 16, 2018

What’s really news is how these ppl can speak so quickly and freely about hating gay ppl or ratchet stuff but didn’t even blink when they heard about the s**** trade.

  18. Leo January 16, 2018

Black America still back in the past . Just reading all these comments …. u think because your kids are walking In the room and see a gay scene it’s a bad thing ? Ha!! Lol ignorance !! Now days our kids are learning the power of equality in school . !

  19. Mr2raw4u January 16, 2018

I keep seein all these people talking about their kids seeing it.

Well your kids shouldn’t be watching Love & Hip Hop to begin with.

  20. Caleb January 16, 2018

This is show that for whatever reason appeals to a very gay audience, so why be surpised or outraged at a gay storyline?

  21. Johnathan January 17, 2018

Y’all kids shouldn’t be watching Love and hip hop anyways. It’s for adults. Y’all ladies need to be focusing on y’all men fr fr. And for your homophobe gentleman, y’all prolly got turned on lmfao. We can’t keep discriminating one another. But it’s ok to see 2 females getting it in. What’s the difference
