As proponents of diversity within media call on creatives to celebrate all shades of blackness when casting actors of colour, the actress Zendaya continues to garner attention for her next movie role.

Why? She is the first woman of colour to take on the role of Ms. Mary Jane Watson in a big screen adaptation of the ‘Spiderman’ story.

How Marvel’s creator, Stan Lee, feels about it?

Find out below…

If she is as good an actress as I hear she is, I think it’ll be absolutely wonderful. The color of their skin doesn’t matter, their religion doesn’t matter. All that matters is that this the right person for the role.

Lee said the above when asked to share his thoughts on Z’s union with ‘Spiderman: Homecoming’ during an interview with the ‘Toronto Sun.’

The movie will make its way to the world on July 7th 2017.

I’m so happy she’ll have this exposure, hopefully she has some good music put away to capitalise on this

    Well said Stan Lee!

They signed her to play it “safe”. As she still looks close to a white woman. They do this in the majority of movies as they feel if they sign a darker actress it won’t elevate the film or will hinder the potential huge success of the movie.

    • OMG Logic!!! October 24, 2016

You’re a moron. Mary Jane Watson is a redhead. No shade other than pale White would be “playing it safe.”

So You’d be fine with Zendaya playing her if she dyed her hair?

      • Danzou October 24, 2016

I hate this person running this account. BLACK WOMEN CAN BE RED HEAD TOO YOU IGNORANT WHITE PASTY NO RHYTHM IDIOT.

      • OMG Logic!!! October 24, 2016

        @Black Is Beautiful

If her acting is good then yes, I would have been okay with Zendaya if she dyed her hair red.

Please keep your ignorant comments to your self. The fact that people are even “weighing in” is the problem in the first place. Enough said. Nobody had a problem when Jesus was whitewashed, knowing he came from a land of everything but white poeple. But when a black person gets a white roll, everybody is shook?

Thank you @team I was about to say the same thing.

Stop ignoring the 100s of red headed bottoms you got on speed dial, Danny.

Almost passed for a white chick

  6. OMG Logic!!! October 24, 2016

I disagree. Whenever a Black character gets given to a White actor, all hell breaks lose. There shouldn’t be double standards. Mary Jane will always be a redhead woman.

    • Danzou October 24, 2016

Ok but your race has literally made movies like the last samurai with a white man as the lead and no one said anything because you’re all hypocritical ass holes. There are movies day in and day out with all white casts or cultural films that have nothing to do with white people but still get nearly all white casted. The minute Mary Jane is black you all have a fit. Y’all are annoying.

For once, I actually agree with you.

      • Danzou October 24, 2016

Tyler shut up you agree with me often.

      • OMG Logic!!! October 24, 2016

You’re joking right? The Last Samurai was criticized by everyone for having Tom Cruise’s miniature ass as a samurai. It was ridiculous trying to put a White man into a historical film.

You can put races that don’t make sense into a fictional movie (like Matt Damon in that supernatural Chinese cast movie) but not into historical roles or, to a lesser extent, well established roles.

To make myself clear, my problem is with Disney changing everything about Mary Jane to the point where she’s not even the same character. At least, they could have kept the trademark red hair.

      • Danzou October 24, 2016

She will have red hair. Again, I don’t see the problem you’re having.

      • Meme October 24, 2016

Have to disagree here because when they had all those white men playing gods of Egypt all hell broke loose. What was suppose to be a huge blockbuster with sequels quickly flopped because they didn’t have people of color in it. So it goes both ways.
