Mo’Nique Explains Netflix Boycott / Takes Aim At Oprah, Tyler Perry, & Lee Daniels (Again)

Published: Saturday 20th Jan 2018 by Sam

Mo’Nique raised eyebrows yesterday when calling for fans and fellow entertainers to boycott Netflix.

As reported, the comedienne went public with her rally over what she feels to be race and gender bias exercised by the company during negotiations for a comedy special.

A mixed bag of responses greeted her demand, but undeterred she expanded on her stance in a new interview with Sway In The Morning on Shade45.

During the intriguing chat, she goes into deep detail about the exchange between her camp and the streaming giant. She also tied the narrative into her much-publisized falling out with Oprah, Tyler Perry, and Lee Daniels.

Watch in full after the jump…

Echoing earlier sentiments, we still feel she’s going about this the wrong way. But, at the same time, we feel her intent is partially rooted in the right place. Just the wrong execution.

But let us know what you think: is Mo’Nique an authentic martyr for racial, social, and institutional injustice? Or is she playing the game wrong and playing herself in the process? What are…

Your thoughts?

Monique learn a lesson from Usher silence is the best key

“Wah wah wah! I deserve millions of dollars for a comedy special because even though I can’t sell out Madison Square Garden like Amy Schumer, I won an Oscar 10 years ago for playing a rachet, ghetto back lady and that means you have to give me everything I want! NOW!”

  3. Bianca January 20, 2018

She played herself trying to pull power moves before gaining the power. She’s has to start all over.

Mo’Nique always makes valid points, but her approach is all wrong. I believe her husband gasses her up. I get it. Know your worth. Don’t play the game…. but you gotta eat girl. I agree that $500K is an insult for an actress/comedienne of her caliber. They could’ve at least offered her $1M.

  5. Mo’Nique needs her Check! January 20, 2018

She’s not wrong! She is absolutely right. At some point enough is enough. We keep sitting back and allowing this to happen. This is 2018 and there is no way in hell Moniqe should be getting paid $500,000 when she is in fact the biggest female comedian of all time next to Joan Rivers and Kathy Griffin! They haven’t even won an Oscar! No one has done what she has done yet. We have young women on the way, but she has paved the way. Why must her voice go unheard and ignored, and what way do you tell someone that is just not enough! $500,000 is such an insult when they are going to literally make millions off of Mo’Nique’s brand. We saw David Chappell who hadn’t been in the lime light for years make his comeback on Netflix with a $22 million plus deal. Mo’Nique is going about this the right way! She isn’t reacting off of anger but facts, truth, and most of all her extensive resume and worth of her brand. I’m a business man and if a company like Netflix came to me and offered me $500,000 when I’ve raked in some of the top box office hit movies. I’d definitely speak out. Especially, If i found out a new young talented white girl named Amy Schumer gets an $11 million offer with $2 million more added to her deal with the same company(Netflix). I’d definitely pull out more than just the race card. I’ll stay tuned and see what kind of offers Tiffany Haddish gets from her $100 million box office hit movie Girls Trip. The excuse Netflix gave to Mo’Nique about how they present their offers based on what they feel they will currently bring in due to relevancy is a load of crap. Reference back to what I just mentioned about David Chapelle. Netflix played her! That Grape Juice y’all either need to be for her or against her. There is no in between in this situation smh.

If you were a real “business man” you would have realized that Netflix is NOT the only company out there! You cannot force a company to do what you want but you surely can shop your project to other companies and see if they will pay more! Furthermore, a real businessman knows that reputation is everything in the entertainment industry so you would nit do things like this which makes studios afraid to work with you. Thus, you are just a wannabe “business man” that is clueless on what a real businessman is!

      • It’s The Principle January 20, 2018

You sound like a tap dancing ignorant fool. Netflix came to her dumbass. She’s not shopping anything around. If they thought she was relevant enough to give her a comedy special on their platform alongside Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock, her pay shouldn’t be 90%+ less than theirs. It makes no f-cking sense. How the f-ck is her reputation a part of the conversation when they wanted to affiliate the Netflix brand with her? Netflix knows that regardless of the phantom “bridges she’s burned,” black people that subscribe to their platform would watch a Monique special and it will increase their “diversity” content. You’re dumb if you think being a quiet s****, that takes whatever someone decides to give you, is “business.”

      • Jasmine January 20, 2018

@It’s The Principle Do not ever call me “a tap dancing ignorant fool” b|tch! I am NOT an Uncle Tom, NOT a fool, NOT a “quiet s****”, NOT a s****, and NOT puppet for white people b|tch! I AM A MONEY MAKER! I always secure the bag and I have managed entertainment acts (still do) and I always secure the bag for them too! You are the fool if you think Netflix is going to offer anyone top dollar with the initial offer b|tch. Dave Chappelle’s team and Chris Rock’s team NEGOTIATED for their contracts. Why do you think all the articles pertaining to Dave Chapelle and Chris say the word “secured”? Do you even know what that word means? You and Monique are taking this personal when this is only business! All I said was NEGOTIATE and don’t BLACKLIST yourself and b|tches like you want to interpret it the wrong way!

      • It’s The Principle January 21, 2018

Have you not been following the story? According to Monique, she and her management reached out to Netflix multiple times to privately negotiate and they ignored their requests. Only when they threatened to go public did Nexflix allegedly return their call. According to Monique, they refused to change the offer. Did you even watch the f-cking Sway interview fool?! Hell NO because here you are trying to stir up sh-t and don’t even know what the f-ck you’re talking about. If your gonna be a tap dancing fool, at least do your research first and don’t be an ignorant one. And if you don’t even have the power to negotiate your own pay, how the hell do you have the power to “blacklist” yourself? Lee Daniels said he’d work with her again… so what the f-ck are you talking about? Netflix ain’t sh-t and apparently you aren’t either.

      • Jasmine January 21, 2018

@It’s The Principle Stop the name callilng b|tch. Unlike you, I have jobs, a life, and a family to take care of. If you think I am going to watch a 60 minute interview between Sway and Monique when this site could have to written out the highlights then you are the fool! Get a job and a life stupid b|tch! I stand behind EVERYTHING I said and EVERYTHING I said is 100% TRUE! You are the Fool! You are the B|Tch. You are the cooon! No run along stupid t*****.

      • Cough Cough January 21, 2018

Lol @jasmine you are the textbook definition of an IDIOT. You have a life, a family, money and an alleged career managing entertainment acts but you’re on this crappy site writing paragraphs about about things you don’t even take the time to watch? Loser. Lol

      • Mo’Nique needs her Check! January 21, 2018

Well, I’d hate for you to be my manager. You need to educate yourself, clearly! I don’t even want to waste a paragraph trying to debate with you about my business dealings @Its The Principle and @Cough Cough aren’t fooled by your rhetoric …. Netflix came to her. They came to her knowing they would profit. They offered her a low amount (500k) thinking they could play her while making more money off of her. Wanda Sykes just confessed that she was offered an even lower number than $500k. Netflix doesn’t believe black women are a market that will crossover or bring extreme revenue to their brand. Mo’Nique would have been their test dummie. They would have taken a light risk, and would have most likely profited majorly! She knows the worth of her brand, and that’s why she declined their offer. The offer was not only an insult, but would have been a horrible business deal! My lowest offer for Mo’nique if I were Netflix I would have offered her $1,000,000 with a $1,000,000 sign on bonus including 35% share of streaming revenue. I believe that would have been a respectful offer to start out with. I would expect Mo’Nique to of course come to me with a higher offer. We would have negotiated and came to a compromise. No deal should go the way either one wants it to go. However, the deal should be negotiated, challenged, and reached to an agreement that both parties agree is fare. As the old saying goes you stand for nothing you will fall for anything. The offers will always come, but when you settle you’re settling for less! Never go in with your best offer. Always start out fare, that wasn’t fare for Mo’Nique Jasmine! That was pure greed on Netflix end! They knew what they would have gained extreme revenue and entire new diverse audience to their brand!

      • Jasmine January 21, 2018

I stand behind my comments 100 % and now that you are talking about negotiation strategies and stopped talking about entitlement I see that you concur with my opinions and you understand that I was providing constructive, non-biased reasoning instead of the overly emotional (name-calling, etc) and immature responses from people that lack the ability to see the full scope of things.

  6. Jasmine January 20, 2018

Mo just Blacklisted herself yet again (this time with Netflix). Her Hollywood career is over. Back to the comedy club tours she goes and she better have some new material. I don’t feel bad for her because she blew her own career (BET prime time show, Oprah”s OWN, Lee Daniel Productions, Tyler Perry Studios, Lionsgate, and now Netflix). Thousands of comedians / actors wish they had those kinds of opportunities and this dummy just blew it because of her huge ego.

  7. Maxie foxx January 20, 2018

I stand by what she said 100%. Monique been in the game for 20yrs. For them to offer her 500k is an insult.

    • Jasmine January 20, 2018

It is not an “insult” but rather a reality check. If there were other companies that offered her millions while Netflix offered her 500K then she would have a leg to stand on but right now all she has is the 500K offer from Netflix so how is Netflix wrong or insulting her? Why should Netflix overpay her? Plenty of people have been in the entertainment industry for 20 years and cannot even get 500K offers so that comment is irrelevant.

      • It’s The Principle January 20, 2018

Why did they overpay Amy Schumer?

      • Jasmine January 20, 2018

@It’s The Principle I forgot to mention that Amy’s team negotiated with Netflix privately and it was not public knowledge (still isn’t) of exactly how much she got paid until over a year later. Monique is going about this the ghetto way and getting herself blacklisted with Netflix. Monique should have negotiated privately with Netflix to get a higher pay.

    • MUSICHEAD January 20, 2018

I agree with you @Maxie. She’s definitely not worth $13 million but $500,000 is a low offer. They should have offered her $1-2 million based on the scale comparison of previous award winning and famous comedians they’ve paid before.

      • Jasmine January 20, 2018

@MUSICHEAD Key phrase is “should of” meaning that may be the amount Monique expected but whatever happened to negotiations? I think the problem with Monique is that she does not have proper management! After ICM Partners dropped her perhaps her husband is her manager? If so, what qualifies him to be a manager? A good manager negotiates for more and does not just expect more.

  8. jj January 20, 2018

shes right about everything, the problem is nobody cares

  9. jj January 20, 2018

shes right the problem is she is the black sheep of her field

  10. CJ January 21, 2018

I love MoNique BUT she is NOT Chris Rock type Money!!

  11. Devon Watson January 22, 2018

@jasmine according to the sway interview she tried to negotiate with them and when she made points that they couldn’t deny they said they understand what she’s saying but they are gonna move on so if that’s true there was no way they was going to give her more money

    • Jasmine January 22, 2018

When I say negotiate I mean the full scope of negotiating, which entails getting offers from competitors and going back to the negotiation table demanding that they beat the competitor’s offer or being prepared to work with the competitor. I honestly don’t think Mo’s team did that. I also think Mo should have gotten a better offer with a competitor before shaming Netflix. This way Mo us getting paid while shaming Netflix and she could have made a few jokes about it in her show.

  12. StarXavi January 23, 2018

I don’t disagree with the sentiment that Monique has but let’s be real…you have not had a run like Kevin Hart, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, or Richard Pryor. Precious was the one and only movie that was a huge success. She has never been a box office draw. They want to make sure they make back on their investment, but Monique does not guarantee that. The Parkers was never as successful as The Chappelle Show and thats two seasons vs. 5 for the The Parkers. You’re not a legend Monique, I’m sorry. There are many people who have won Oscars and then never heard from again.
