Oscar Ratings Hit 8-Year Low

The 88th Annual Academy Awards may have spelled success for Leonardo Dicaprio and Sam Smith  but it hasn’t done the same for those hoping it would soar on a ratings front.

Why?

Bad news below…

Slammed for its supposed exclusion of actors of colour this year’s ceremony saw its organisers slapped with its lowest ratings in eight years.

Deadline reports:

The show reached an 8-year low, that’s down 6% from the 24.6/39 that the ceremony got last year in early results from the 56 markets across the country. That 2015 Neil Patrick Harris=hosted Oscars were matched with the 2011 Oscars for the third worst the Academy Awards has done in MM ratings since the last time Rock fronted the gig in 2005 – only 2009’s Hugh Jackman-hosted 23.3 and 2008’s Jon Stewart-hosted 21.9 were lower. Obviously, in the early results, last night’s show dipped below 2009 and close to 2008 numbers.

Last year’s ceremony picked up 37.3 million viewers (one of its lowest figures) with the help of host Neil Patrick Harris but, despite critically lauded performances put on by Chris Rock and Lady Gaga, will be unmatched by this year’s televised outing.

Keep it locked on TGJ to find out what the final figure is when it is published later on today.

Until then, we’ll ask you…

What went wrong?

Update: The ceremony swept up 31.76 million viewers.

Why is Lady Gaga on the cover of this article?
Is she that big of a Pop Star that everything she does counts on her ratings wise? There were tons of A+ Lists stars in that room.

Gagas song is now in the Top 10 on iTunes and is the most talked about today on all media outlets. She’s back and she did an amazing job. Bottom line.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 29, 2016

She´s doing amazing and this is obviously not about her. That´s retarded.

    • Arx February 29, 2016

Im sure if the ratings were high you wouldn’t have a problem with her face being on this article… Boring song by a NOW BORING artist. Seriously, Gaga is now generic. Gaga used to push the envelope and create conversation but now she looks like a less attractive Adele.

No sorry anything Ciara is attached too is a FLOP…. When’s the last time she’s been awarded.. Or hell even nominated for something. She’s TRASH just like her sales, music & career

  7. Cinnamon Girl February 29, 2016

My point exactly! No one cares about this. The media loves to exaggerate

  8. JazSullivan February 29, 2016

The Oscars are boring. No one watches except stuffy old white people. I’d rather watch the NAACP Image Awards, BET Honors or Trumpet Awards.

    • OMG Logic!!! February 29, 2016

Some of us prefer to watch shows with actual prestige like the Oscars, so speak for yourself.

      • JazSullivan February 29, 2016

Well obviously no one cares for such a “prestigious” ceremony according to the embarrassingly low ratings.?

      • JOHNVIDAL February 29, 2016

        Jaz
Are you retarded? One of the biggest ratings a show can get any given year and you say noone cares? LMAO These jealous girls kill me. All those people in that ceremony are winning. That´s for damn sure.

  9. LmfaoHoe February 29, 2016

I’m glad this happen. Black people along with Hispanics, Asians, and some whites are tired of the system ignoring us while trying to benefit off of us again and again. We about to have our own awards shows and remain unbothered. Rock did his thang, but I for one was not gonna give them my views. In order to make changes we must stick to our words and provide action.

    • OMG Logic!!! February 29, 2016

Ignoring “us.” There it is again. Black people thinking theyk and only, they matter. Asians and Hispanics are the only groups that have ANY right to be angry with the Oscars. They’re the ones that get no representation.

      • JazSullivan February 29, 2016

Asians and Hispanics can speak for themselves if they want to.

      • What now February 29, 2016

SMH take the KKK hood off and you’ll see “us” = Blacks, Hispanics, and etc aka not just Blacks.

    • Cinnamon Girl February 29, 2016

Lol. The Oscars always have low ratings. It has nothing to do with a silly boycott

  10. christinastherealtalent February 29, 2016

In true Gaga fashion, she takes somebody else’s situation and makes it all about her! She barely speaks about her alleged sexual abuse but the second anybody else speaks out about their own, here comes Gaga doing the absolute MOST and makes it all about her!

  11. Gee February 29, 2016

Gaga is one of the few actual talented artists of this generation I believe her star will slowly climb again,

  12. SCHEISSETHRONED February 29, 2016

Lmao what about Gaga makes people so mad?

    Let me explain….

She came into the pop scene and completely dominated. NO ONE could compare. Everything she was nominated for she won, everything she made was gold. No one else got any attention.

Fast Forward to when there is a dip in her career, everyone has a chance to win awards and get recognition.

This isn’t about Gaga being talented or selling. She has already proven herself time and time again, performance after performance. She is an icon. But other signs do not want her to dominate again because they know that’s bad news for their fave. People don’t mind anyone BUT Gaga dominating

And if I didn’t Stan her I would fee the same way.,.

    Stay pressed

    • What now February 29, 2016

There’s a bigger pic here that your fat a*** can’t see because of your ignorance. Put the bacon down and read a damn book.

  14. What now February 29, 2016

I’m not a Gaga fan, but it’s not her responsibility to bring in ratings soley by herself. It’s the Oscars! The host and etc is supposed to speak for itself. The real reason the ratings fell is because people are getting sick of the lack of diversity. Even if Jada and etc spoke out for their own selfish reasons, I’m glad they said something because that attention was needed. The Oscars committee was beyond wrong with their choices for ALL categories. Between Chris Rock offensive opening, Stacey Clueless A***, and etc., the Oscars deserve to fail. Ironic that 8 years ago we didn’t have President Obama in office though right???

  15. OMG Logic!!! February 29, 2016

More than likely this is just the trend of television becoming less and less popular. Everyone kept up with the Oscars one way or another, so it wasn’t for lack of interest. I’m sure if the Oscars evolves and adds a digital streaming option next year, they’ll have a record audience watching.

    • JOHNVIDAL February 29, 2016

Thank you for having common sense.

  16. Kii February 29, 2016

I hope Leo doesn’t start flopping now that he won an Oscar

  17. JOHNVIDAL February 29, 2016

Ratings for any type of show decline nowadays. Digital era. Nothing to do with the people attending or audiences not being interested. This year they had a lot of well loved films by the general public in the nominations. So people were interested for sure. People who are interested in cinema that is. Not you guys who don´t recognize talent even if it hits you in the face 🙂

  18. Authentic February 29, 2016

    F** all this white s***…

  19. Rosie February 29, 2016

Death at them bragging about going top 10 from the most watched annual TV event in the US after the Super Bowl. What did you expect? #10 these days sells like 50-60K. The song will plummet like West Coast next week anyways.
Kelly Clarkson went straight to #1 with a 50% lead from a damn American Idol performance. A show with 4 times less viewers.

    • JOHNVIDAL March 1, 2016

Pressed. A song performed at the oscars and not made for pop charts never tops the charts the day after or anything. Let it go man, let it go. She´s doing great. Every critic I´ve seen after the show says academy voters probably would have chosen her song if they had seen that performance before the voting, and not Sam´s, who by any standards was weak and the song is not liked at all in general. Most voters just didn´t watch that movie, so they didn´t vote for the song.

  20. FC/JC February 29, 2016

It was a bunch of crontrived BS, I only enjoyed Chris Rock addressing the situation, and watching Leo win his very first Oscar…. they could have kept the rest, and Ive been a watcher of the Oscars for years…. This year was a snoozefest

  21. who your unpillow talk boy couldn’t have it another damn way March 1, 2016

Chris rock was funny on the Oscar show
