With the Oscars around the corner, ‘Passing’ has emerged as one of the titles tipped to nab multiple nominations.

And with just reasoning.

The powerful production (which is adapted from Nella Larsen’s 1929 novel of the same name) chronicles the story of two Black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson w)and Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), who are able to “pass” as white. Despite establishing a bond as childhood friends, contrasting narratives play out as the ladies opt to live on opposite sides of the color line in 1920s New York.

Their paths intertwine in adulthood and what plays out from there is a compelling exploration of repression, denial, division, and harsh realizations.

That Grape Juice‘s Samuel Eni sat down with Thompson and Academy Award nominee Negga to discuss the film and its broader impact.
