Kylie Jenner may be a polarizing figure in Pop culture, but there’s no denying the commercial clout she carries.

Indeed, whether it’s make-up or clothing: if Kylie rocks it, there are many who will flock to buy it.

Alfre Woodard‘s illustrious career adds an incredible new chapter named ‘Clemency.’

Directed by Chinonye Chukwu, the harrowing prison drama won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival and deservingly so.

The film sees Woodard deliver a masterful performance as death row Warden Bernadine Williams.

Throughout its course, ‘Clemency’ hones in on the tall toll executions and their preceding moments take on Williams.

Central to the story is her interaction with a particular prisoner (played by Aldis Hodge), who maintains his innocence.

Ahead of the film’s UK release on July 17th, That Grape Juice‘s Samuel Eni caught up with the revered actress, who opened up about the role, the move towards equality in Black in Hollywood, advice for young creatives, and much more.

Durable.

In order to justify the atrocities they meted out to black men, women and children, the human rights violators who powered the slave trade convinced themselves that black people were durable…willing and physically capable of handling the abuse they faced.

Unfortunately, this idea did not die with the trade’s demise and made its way into present day where people of African descent are deemed to be “stronger” or more durable than the white counterparts. The sum of this idea has deadly consequences.

Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature designed to celebrate TV and Film’s brightest moments and honour our creative ancestors.

Today, we revisit the life of Lena Horne.

Born on June 30th 1917, the entertainer was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant and was the descendant of an enslaved Senegalese girl as well as the seventh vice President of the United States John C. Calhoun according to some reports.

Her uncle, Frank S. Horne, would go on to become adviser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and raised her between 1927 and 1929. Undoubtedly inspired by her family’s rich legacy, Horne would go on to carve one of her own in the fall of 1933 when she launched what would become a groundbreaking career.
