The Viola Davis-led murder mystery series ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ was at one time ABC’s highest rated series.  Premiering to a whopping 14 million in late 2014, the critically acclaimed show garnered much buzz among industry insiders and television viewers alike for its suspenseful and ever-twisting storyline.  But, just as its home network tightened its grip on dominating Thursday nights, it appears the series was losing grip on its once-thought-to-be strong viewer base.

And, while season 2 premiered to a commendable 8.4 million, its finale sang a much different tune.  Drawing in 5.29 million, the noticeable dip in ratings made some fans worry ABC was ready to kill ‘Murder’ from its Thursday night lineup.

If they were worried then, season 3’s premiere – which aired last night (September 22) – will do little to ease those fears:

Viewers = 5.113 Million

Source:

“Thursday’s season three “HTGAWM” premiere drew a 1.4 adults 18-49 and 5.11 million total viewers. The numbers [are down compared to] those of the season two premiere by 46% and 39%, respectively.

The numbers are, however, roughly on par with the 1.4 adults 18-49 rating and 5.29 million viewer mark garnered by the second season finale.

“HTGAWM” did not receive any help from context. In addition to competition from a strong football game, the episode faced competition from new timeslot rival “The Blacklist” (“HTGAWM” narrowly beat the show in adults 18-49, but it is hard to ignore the potential impact) and weakened lead-in support.”

    • Ughhhh September 23, 2016

      Right! TGJ is reaching these are still great numbers! These numbers are low because no one is tuning in for that Notorious show that is replacing Scandal during its hiatus.

        Lol 5 million viewers is not good for a major network tv series. It’s horrible.

      Clueless response. TV is a BUSINESS. Low ratings=eventual cancellation no matter how “good” the show is.

      who cares? the network, who’ll cancel this show by the end of the season if you don’t get your sluuuuuts to start watching.

    That mess doesn’t matter anymore just like album sales. Eceeyone doesn’t watch cable like that. For instance, I wait for Hulu to air it the next day and that when I watch it. I’m glad all my shows are back. Scream queens, how to get away with murder, and once upon a time. All I need is JLo to come on with season 2 of shades of blue.

      It matters because the ratings determine whether the show will continue to be renewed. If the ratings continue decline the show will eventually get cancelled.

    The show started doing too much on season 2 where they got to a point that its not believeable at all anymore.

    I love twists on tv and movies, but there is always a limit

    I guess I’m the only one who stopped watching this show during the first season because I couldn’t tell what the heck was going on. Too many flashbacks, fastfowards, and hypotheticals for me. I wanted to like and follow the show because I love the concept but besides being confusing for me it also went way too far in having the teacher and students involved in the crimes, at least I think they were, I really didn’t stick around long enough to figure things out. Guess I just don’t have the patience/attention span for shows like that.

    The plot is a little convoluted and hard to follow. However HTGAWM has always been known for its strong DVR numbers and critical acclaimm, that’s why it’s still on. It’ll get at least one more session I think but I’ve always thought the plot would turn some viewers away eventualy.

    This show is already syndicated to Netflix. I know someone who actually waits until after the season to bingewatch. That, along with the late timeslot and weak lead-in, could be factors here. If the ratings stabilize and improve some, and if the syndication proves lucrative enough, this show could be renewed.
