Despite being off the air for almost 20 years, the impact and popularity of ‘The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air’ resonates still today.
As such, news that a reboot is in the works is sure to set tongues a’wagging.
Full story below…
TV Line reports that Will Smith – who rose to superstardom on the groundbreaking comedy – is actively developing a revival of the series under the umbrella of his production company, Overbrook Entertainment.
According to multiple sources, Overbrook , is in the very early stages of developing a present-day Fresh Prince reboot that puts a new spin on the fish-out-of-water tale while maintaining the spirit of the original series. (An official longline is still being hammered out.)
I’m told a pitch is being finalized now and Overbrook will begin shopping it around in the coming weeks. Smith would serve as an EP alongside his Overbrook producing partners James Lassiter, Caleeb Pinkett and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
It remains unclear if Fresh Prince 2.0 will be a straight reboot along the lines of Hawaii Five-0, or a revival/continuation a la Netflix’s Fuller House.
Hollywood’s revival craze really is in full-effect, something we’re not entirely sure we’re psyched about.
Still, for all the strides in “Urban” programming (take from that what you will), there absolutely room for more – especially something with the DNA of the ‘Fresh Prince.’
That said, for the (new) show’s sake, we hope it merely borrows elements of the concept rather than position itself as a sequel or continuation. The latter would be entirely too risky.
We’ll be watching how this unfolds.
For now, though….
What about uncle Phil…
Bit late now willy
Please don’t tell me Will is going to try to shove Jaden Smith down our throats again with this reboot.
I have said this for a year plus now. I wanted then to bring back Alfonso as the uncle Phil type father and Tatiyana as an aunt figure who stopes by. Maybe even the Hilary character as an aunt. But it could work a modern day version show is one of the best sitcoms of my lifetime that’s for certain. Loved how it was funny and not corny like Full House or Family Matters was, but still had morals and values.
Why are they trying to reboot everything?
Just like the film industry. Keep remaking and making sequels because apparently they can’t think of any good new ideas. A damn shame tbh. Family Matters and Step By Step is next ????
Nooo leave it alone. Its a classic show, don’t mess it up. But they can put it(and Martin) on Netflix/Hulu for us fans ☺
Can they put Big bird’s Walmart’s performance there too, maybe it can get views since clearly no one was here for the live act.
Well no one was there for the Struggleprint tour either even after selling her tickets on Groupon she’s still struggling to fill 48% of the seats
This was my all-time favourite comedy growing up, and I don’t want them to ruin the legendary television. Plus they would have to do it without Uncle Phil, since James Avery sadly passed away.
P.S. I didn’t agree with the fact that they replaced Aunt Viv with an actress who looked nothing like her. Just like the time Claire in My Wife & Kids, got replaced with an actress that looked nothing like the original.
Lol both times they opted for a lighter skin version too. Ironic.
I imagine it if anything to be a sequel series or like modern version not one where the entire cast comes back like Fuller House.
I bet you Will is gonna find a way to introduce his annoying ass kids to show, so he can set off their careers again. LOL And at least in My Wife & Kids they made fun of the fact that they hired a new actress, I remember when Jennifer came to the show Michael said something like:
“What’s happened Claire, It’s like you’ve changed into a new person”. LMAO
WHY THO?
