Ready for another serving of ‘Soul Food’?

According to new reports, a sequel to the 1997 classic is currently being cooked up by Fox 2000.

Details below…

THR reveals that development is at an advanced stage for the film’s follow-up, which has a working title of ‘More Soul Food.’

As many will recall, the original film, starring an ensemble cast that included Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox, Nia Long, and Mekhi Phifer, followed a tight-knit African-American family who had a tradition of eating a big dinner together every Sunday. But their bond begins to fall apart after the death of their matriarch.

Conceptually, the sequel will introduce the new, millennial generation of the Joseph family. The reports adds, that “in the age of cell phones and social media, the once-close clan finds themselves disconnected and, without the guidance of the elders who have always held things together, they struggle to rediscover the importance of tradition and family.”

As always with sequels, there’ll inevitably be a sect raising an eyebrow. To appease such worries, George Tillman Jr., who wrote and directed the original, is back on board. He, along with Nathan Skulnik, are writing the new script. Tillman’s State Street Pictures will produce along with Tracey and Babyface Edmonds.

The first film, which amassed $43.7 million , also spawned a Showtime TV series, ‘Soul Food: The Series.’ A hit in its own right, said show aired from 2000-2004.

It’ll be intriguing to see if any of the original cast return.

In the meanwhile, as ever…

I loved the movie but to me the TV show actors are the real faces of the characters. I just fell in love with the TV show and it really made me forget about the movie.

    • Anne September 30, 2015

I loved the show but it never made me lose appreciation for the movie and its cast. Vivica, Nia, Vanessa, in no way can they be forgotten in my opinion. I see the casts as two separate entities. I hope they bring back the original cast for the movie and it would also be great to see the show cast return to a tv network. Really enjoyed both. I never get tired of rewatching the movie and the series kept me tuning in.

Maybe they could mix the cast with actors from BOTH the television show and the first movie? We’ll see…at least the writer/director and producers are back…make sure the soundtrack is on point…

    • credits September 30, 2015

the first soundtrack was on point!! i think it was the best r&b/soul soundtrack in movie history. Remember when Pam from total was doing the humming thing in ‘what about us?’ and she was like “uh huh huh huh, yeah yeah” lol and milestone, “i care about you, I’m there for you” and dru hill “where not making love no more.” ugh, ho i miss the 90s.

      • Fancy BISH September 30, 2015

Yaaaaaaaas, the soundtrack sold over 2 million copies….so many great songs…What About Us is STILL the jam…the 90’s chile…lawd!!! 🙂

I’m here for it….and i wouldn’t necessarily mind mixing the tv and movie cast either. I love me some Boris Kodjoe but I dont think theyll do it that way

  7. MUSICHEAD September 30, 2015

The movie and the soundtrack was everything! Total, Milestone, Usher, Monica, Boyz II Men, Dru Hill just to name a few. 1997 was a rough year for my family but I remember seeing this movie was a highlight. Bring on the sequel!

But grandma died and they all found the money and sat down for Sunday dinner as a family again! Story done. Why please?

Don’t tell me, they’re gonna open up a family restaurant

    • Ciah’s Turtle September 30, 2015

They would probably pick up where the tv series ended

Tired of late sequels and reboots. The talent in Hollywood writing is DRY! Black entertainment is dry. Period! What we need is a black superhero movie. Or a black sci fi. Or a black horror movie. Where’s the fresh ideas at man. Such a let down

I’m down for this. I saw this in theaters when me and my friends were still teenagers and though the “story” might have been tied up nicely, it’s been almost 20 years and I know I’m not the same person I was then and I’d like to see how these people turned out or moved on. Did Vanessa or Vivica turn into the next Big Momma? Did they open a restaurant? Has Cousin Faith become domesticated or she up to her old tricks? All 3 of the leads have only become better actors since then and I’m sure they’ll have just as much chemistry now as they did then. And I would love a whole new BabyFace soundtrack. This is full of nothing but win and makes me think I got to throw in some Soul Food tonight. Unfortunately I never got to watch the series but I’m glad it existed because Vanessa Williams is da truth. They both are but I’m talking about the one known more for acting than the triple threat diva who’s joining the Good Wife this year. Anyway, I’m ready for a second helping of Soul Food.

People are only here for the nostalgia factor. Why do they keep doing sequels for 20 year old movies? Have they run out of ideas?

  12. Robert September 30, 2015

Is big mama still alive though (in real life)? She was throughout the tv series. She appeared in flashbacks and as amahd’s guardian angel. I think they should pick up after the last episode and move forward from there. Some people I know didn’t like the show but I loved it. I need to get the complete series for myself.

  13. Stephy. September 30, 2015

    The television series was EVERYTHING!

    • Monica Stan September 30, 2015

I know Porkriah loves soul food

  14. #TeamTinashe Stan September 30, 2015

YESSS!!! This needs to happen. This was one of my favorite TV shows because of the fact this was only one of a few shows that had a black cast on a major network. So it was important for me to watch this and see myself 🙂

  15. Tyler Makiavelli September 30, 2015

It better be good! Because The Best Man sequel was very disappointing….and corny!

  16. AnnaliseKeatingsNewWig September 30, 2015

Apparently they are doing a ‘Waiting to Exhale’ sequel. I hope babyface produces the entire soundtrack because that film had the best soundtrack I’ve heard. Sadly they might have to write out Whitneys character (I’d prefer that, than them recasting her). So many exciting sequels to look forward to!

    • Coolness September 30, 2015

I was JUST watching Soul Food on my laptop today and then I see this news. Kinda freaky. Anyway, here for it so long as they do it right. And they better leave Waiting to Exhale alone!!!

      • AnnaliseKeatingsNewWig September 30, 2015

Realistically no one will want to watch it without Whitney. Mind you, Angela made the announcement about the movie back when she was alive so I don’t think it’s on the cards anymore.

  17. MISHKA September 30, 2015

    Oh well.

Problem is, they need young and popular actors to carry the movie and bring in new audiences.

It will come down to who they will cast to play 20-something Ahmad, his sisters, and Bird’s son. For the role of Ahmad they will need someone like Mack Wilds or Asap Rocky, or even Hakeem Lyon.

Vivica’s character will need to stop her nastiness towards her elder sister.

Vanessa Williams needs an happy ending with a s*** steamy wealthy man on her level.

Mekhi Pfifer needs to snap back in shape.

Cousin Faith should come back only to die to some illness.
