When R&B songstress Tweet burst onto the scene this month 17 years ago with her now signature hit, ‘Oops (Oh My),’ many assumed she was an overnight success.  That assumption, as she recently detailed in BET’s hit web series, ‘Finding BET,’ couldn’t be further from the truth.

Between years of working with the group Sugah before it disbanded to doing background vocals for Missy Elliott and other artists before her breakthrough, Tweet’s (born Charlene Keys) rise to fame was far from swift.  That point made the velocity of her fall from the public eye that much more surprising.

Ever the eternal optimist, Keys recently took to BET to dish on life post the success of her debut album, ‘Southern Hummingbird,’ which included a battle with depression, alcohol abuse, and more before she re-emerged with 2016’s ‘Charlene.’  Also thrilling with news of the set’s soon-to-come follow-up project, look inside to hear the 48-year-old talk on this and more:

Lady Gaga sprung quite the surprise on fans at her latest Las Vegas ‘Enigma’ show last night. For, the supernova invited ‘A Star Is Born’ co-star Bradley Cooper on stage for an impromptu performance of ‘Shallow.’ Their first in a live setting.

Already the recipient of a Golden Globe, the song is in hot contention for an Oscar next month – with the pair likely to take to the stage together to deliver a televised take.

When analysing tropes and themes covered by Beyonce‘s immersive videography, there is one motif which takes centre stage in almost all of her art.

The past…and its presence in present.

Examples? ‘Naughty Girl’ (see 1953’s ‘The Band Wagon’), ‘Formation‘ and its wink at the Reconstruction era, ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ (set in the 1950s) and ‘Flawless‘ (see Punk subculture of the 1980s).

What isn’t as obvious, is the artist’s exploration of the future via magical realism, science fiction..and Afro-futurism.

 

Afrofuturism addresses themes and concerns of the African diaspora through technoculture and science fiction, encompassing a range of media and artists with a shared interest in envisioning black futures that stem from Afrodiasporic experiences.

The people have spoken and it’s clear they want Cardi B!

As we reported here, the rapstress has been making headlines all month long for e-fisticuffs she’s been engaged in for her highly publicized criticism of President Trump.  That outspokenness may have only made her a target for some conservatives, but liberals have praised the ‘Bodak Yellow’ beauty for the attention she’s garnered for the cause.

One supporter, late night talk show host Stephen Colbert, took to Twitter to suggest Cardi deliver the ‘State of the Union’ address rebuttal on behalf of the Democratic Party.  Urging his followers to demonstrate their agreement of the suggestion by “signing” a petition, the call to action – once “signatures” passed the 40,000 mark – began making headlines.
