In Prince‘s short but resonating time on earth, the superstar was fiercely fervent about how and where his music was consumed.

Indeed, beyond his ardent activism for artist independence from the major label machine, he was a weary of the digital revolution and made a point to play that game on his own terms. It’s a decision which, in the wake of his sudden death aged 57,  is making the rush for access to his vast catalogue the definition of a treasure hunt.

Still, it hasn’t quelled the mass appetite to re-live the tunes that defined a generation and inspired many more.

A perusal of the iTunes charts illuminates this in earnest.

With the world still processing the passing of music icon Prince, the musical tributes have begun to rain down for the Purple One.

One of the first came courtesy of Jennifer Hudson, and the cast of Broadway’s The Color Purple.

At the end of last night’s performance, J.Hud along with lead Cynthia Erivo and the show’s ensemble actors joined together for a spirited performance of ‘Purple Rain.’

RCA Records will release the set on June 10th.

So, as our retrospective features ‘From the Vault’ and ‘TGJ Replay’  allow us the chance to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday of one artist, our newest feature Chart Rewind – a variation of our current Retro Rewind assay – accedes salutes to an entire era of music history.

This week we will show a little love to ‘Because You Loved Me,’ Celine Dion‘s megahit from 1996.  Originally pitched to Toni Braxton by songwriting legend Diane Warren, the song would land in the hands of Dion after L.A. Reid decided ‘Unbreak My Heart,’ another tune penned by Warren, was a better fit for the ‘Another Sad Love Song’ singer.  The “switcheroo” would prove a lucrative decision as both divas earned career-defining hits out of the deal…
