In Prince‘s short but resonating time on earth, the superstar was fiercely fervent about how and where his music was consumed.

Indeed, beyond his ardent activism for artist independence from the major label machine, he was a weary of the digital revolution and made a point to play that game on his own terms. It’s a decision which, in the wake of his sudden death aged 57,  is making the rush for access to his vast catalogue the definition of a treasure hunt.

Still, it hasn’t quelled the mass appetite to re-live the tunes that defined a generation and inspired many more.

A perusal of the iTunes charts illuminates this in earnest.

With the world still processing the passing of music icon Prince, the musical tributes have begun to rain down for the Purple One.

One of the first came courtesy of Jennifer Hudson, and the cast of Broadway’s The Color Purple.

At the end of last night’s performance, J.Hud along with lead Cynthia Erivo and the show’s ensemble actors joined together for a spirited performance of ‘Purple Rain.’

Fantasia has officially announced her fifth studio album.

The set which follows 2013’s ‘Side Effects Of You,’ has been christened ‘The Definition Of…’

RCA Records will release the set on June 10th.

Preceded by promotional tracks ‘No Time For It’ and ‘Ugly,’ the soul-filled songbird hatched another new song from the set in the form of ‘So Blue.’

For years, the “M” in MTV proudly and powerfully represented “music.”

A potent pioneer in shaping the music industry as it’s come to be, the cable network birthed and popularised the music video format. More broadly, it ushered in what many christened the “MTV Generation.”

In recent years the channel has been dealt a number of devastating blows – some of which were self-inflicted.

Indeed, the endless influx of inane reality shows (with no focus on music) paired with the rapid rise of online music consumption cast a bleak outlook on the network’s future.
