Janet: ‘Damita Jo’ & ’20 Y.O’ Weren’t Right

0 61 janet320 Janet: Damita Jo & 20 Y.O Werent Right Pop superstar Janet Jackson has shrugged off suggestion that the poor performance of her last two albums had anything to do with the 2004 Superbowl fiasco:

Janet, the Jacksons’ equivalent of Marilyn Munster, told me the other night that the CDs simply weren’t that good.

Both “Damita Jo” and “20 Y.O” were flops. Many people in the music biz attributed her sales decline to her “wardrobe malfunction.”

“Ms. Jackson” disagrees. “I think it was the music,” she said when we talked about her upcoming album debut on Island DefJam, “Discipline.”

“The albums weren’t right,” she added.

The first track from “Discipline,” titled “Feedback,” was used as radio bait. The rest of “Discipline” — due on Feb. 26 — should undo the damage of her previous two outings, according to Jackson and her fiancé, Jermaine Dupri, who’s her main producer. {Source}

Retrospectively, I do feel ’2.0 Y.O’ was a solid effort, but could have been much better. ‘Damita Jo’ is her best LP since the decade began IMO, so I can’t say I agree that the Superbowl didn’t affect the sales of that record. Interestingly, it appears the label are going with idea of ‘Feedback’ being a buzz single, which I’m sure wouldn’t have been the case had the single raced up the charts as hoped. Still, I’m anticipating ‘Discipline’ delivering the goods – and the sales.

‘Discipline’ Listening Session – New York

A listening session for select publications/websites, to hear Janet Jackson’s new album ‘Discipline’ was held in New York yesterday. That Grape Juice actually received an invite, yet, with such short notice, it wasn’t possible to make travel arrangements soon enough. Still, our good friend Soul Man over at SOHH Soulful did attend and kindly sent along this video. La Reid, Janet and Jermaine Dupri were all in attendance:

Great interview.

Tidbits: The official promotional trailer for ‘Discipline’ can be viewed by clicking here // I’ve posted the Janet Xone (fansite) write-up of the session in the comments section. Enjoy.

Any thoughts?

JD & Mariah In The Studio

Hit-maker Jermaine Dupri posted this new video of him working with superstar Mariah Carey at the singer’s in-house studio. Listen out around the middle for a very small snippet of a new track from Mariah’s ‘That Chick’ album rumored to be ‘Thanks For Nothing.’ Stephen Hill, the Senior VP of Music Programming and Talent at BET and Rachel McIntosh, Mariah’s choreographer (lol lol lol) also make an appearance in the vid. Tidbit: Is it me or was Mariah’s obsession with ‘the right lighting’ kinda annoying?

New Songs: Janet Jackson – ‘Rock With U’ & ‘LUV’

janet+new+tracks New Songs: Janet Jackson Rock With U & LUVIt had been announced previously that fans should hit up Janet Jackson’s official website today at 1pm (US) / 6pm (UK) for a surprise of some sort. It turns out the ‘surprise’ was two new tracks from Janet’s highly anticipated ‘Discipline’ album – ‘Rock With U’ & ‘LUV’.

The first, ‘Rock With U’ is a futuristic techno-esque cut. Fans of the Kylie Minogue sound, will eat this up, as will the European market. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the song is the fact that it’s produced by Jermaine Dupri. Very alternate to the sound we’ve come to expect from the hit-maker. Not the best Janet track, but satisfying, all the same.

‘WOW’ is the what came to mind after listening to the Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins produced ‘LUV’. I’m actually still playing it as I type. The beat goes HARD. The vocal arrangements are on-point too, with Janet’s harmonies complimenting the gritty production. My gut told me Darkchild’s involvement with the project would yield great results – case example, this and ‘Feedback’.

If these are indicative of the rest of the album, Ms Jackson is onto a winner.

Hit(s) or Miss(es)?

Janet Jackson Tidbits

janet+promo+pic+1 Janet Jackson Tidbits Taken from Janet’s recent feature in the latest issue of Billboard magazine, the pic above looks great. Judging from the recent press shots of Ms. Jackson for her new album ‘Discipline’, it appears she’s going for the ‘grown and sexy’ look. Indeed, she looks both.
A new press release I received today on ‘Discipline’ confirmed the titles (and the composers) of four tracks on the album:
* ‘Discipline’ (Written and produced by Ne-Yo)
* ‘Can’t Be Good’ (Written and produced by Ne-Yo)
* ‘Letchu Go’ (Produced by Jermaine Dupri and Co-Written with Johnta Austin)
* ‘Roller Coaster’ (Produced by Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins)
Interesting. Kinda random, I know, but I’m glad Darkchild has more than one track on the CD (he produced lead single ‘Feedback’ with newcomer D’Mile). He delivered a great, unexpected new sound with ‘Feedback’, so I’m particularly anxious to see what he’s done with Janet on ‘Roller Coaster’. Saying that, I’m hoping Janet wracks up at least a couple of writing credits on the album.
‘Discipline’ hits stores in the Europe on February 25th and the US on February 26th.

Mariah’s Album Pushed Back (Again)

ccf055d2e21ddfd2cd8d0249a4e4f09e Mariahs Album Pushed Back (Again)According to the most recent edition of Billboard Magazine, Mariah Carey’s still untitled new album will not be released ‘first quarter’ of this year as previously announced; the set will instead drop second quarter of 08 (anytime from April onwards). The album was initially meant to hit stores late last year, however was pushed back. {Source}
I’m starting to think this Mariah / Janet dropping at the same time scenario (as Jermaine Dupri proposed) isn’t likely to happen and I think it makes sense. You can’t have artist of that magnitude releasing records at the same time – one will end up looking lesser than the other.
