New Song: Katy Perry – ‘California Gurls (ft. Snoop Dogg)’

Published: Sunday 9th May 2010 by Sam

In what has to be one of the most random musical pairing in some time, Katy Perry has teamed up with Snoop Dogg for new single ‘California Gurls’. Produced by hitmaker Dr Luke, the song works surprisingly well – rolling into one simplistically stellar production (which gives a nod to early Madonna), an infectious sing-along-song chorus, and a killer verse from Snoop. Undoubtedly, a summer smash.

Take a listen below…

  2. MONE May 9, 2010

  3. Missingbeyonce May 9, 2010

  4. Kyus93 May 9, 2010

Sounds like Tik Tok. Not as good as her previous 4 singles but still, not bad

  5. Oggie May 9, 2010

Deffo a massive hit very remiscent of Holiday by Madonna but a hit

  6. LoveIt May 9, 2010

This is Katy’s song for LA, like her own response to Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z. It is a great summer song and is a movement to more of a Pop sound for Katy and it’s really good. Love Snoop in it 2. Also Dr Luke has produced songs for Miley (Party In USA) and Ke$ha (Tik Tok) so when you listen to the instrumental, Dr Luke has used similar instruments to PINUSA and TT and added some other instruements so of course it will sound a little similar but I think all producers have familiar sounding songs (like their signature style) and this is another to fit under this. I think it will do well.

its a nice song but am i the only one that hears Tik Tok by Ke$ha in this song at the beginning?
    the beat…
anyways Dr. Luke produced that song so i can’t hate
    nice song definetly a hit… =)

  8. Last Boy on Earth May 9, 2010

    @magdalena
exactly… I think that there is nothing special about this song but everyone seems to love it

  9. ADE May 9, 2010

Heard this the other day and I like

  10. Waddie G. May 9, 2010

It sounds just like Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”

Doesn’t matter because Katy Perry sucks…her personality is fake (wanna be a Vargas girl so bad)…her singing is just as good as Kesha’s (catch the shade in that)…and she has Snoop on the track…he might be a legend in the rap game, but he has been corny since the new millenium

  11. Natalie May 9, 2010

Wait why is everybody copying everybody this b**** sounds like kesha. This song sounds horrible. If I want to listen to kesha I’ll go listen to tik tok.

  12. Ghetto Fab May 9, 2010

I’m not impressed. SHAME ON THE PRODUCER! This sounds like something left off of Kesha’s, Gaga’s, or Taio Cruz’s albums. I don’t mind the producers using the same genre but when they serve you the same song it is just UNACCEPTABLE!

With that being said this will probably be a hit. Americans are so dumb and gullable they will think this is the hottest song this summer. Meanwhile its the same song they’ve been serving you. They didn’t even bother to change the melody! SMH Shame shame shame!

  13. Kross May 9, 2010

I don’t like it! She can’t f****** sing…seems like they just passing out record deals to anyone these dayz…ummm

  14. Carl May 9, 2010

    Sounds EXACTLY like tik-tok

  15. Ben May 9, 2010

It’s ok. I like Katy, but the song is just ok.

  16. Ghetto Fab May 9, 2010

Of course it would sound like Tick Tock it’s the same damn producer! Shame on you Dr. Luke. I hate when a producer has a hit with one song and tries to pawn it off on the public as another song disguised with another artist attached to it. All they are trying to do is cash in on the success of Dr. Luke’s other song Tick Tock. It’s a damn shame the way the industry is today. I bet you they are going to make this a hit. And you all know who I mean by “they.” No creativeness anymore it’s annoying.

  17. Ghetto Fab May 9, 2010

Dead @ the Betty Paige look that her and another celebrity are trying to potray LMAO

  18. “Dj Y2k Malone” May 9, 2010

  19. jewlez May 9, 2010

Song is really catchy, but people around the net have been saying (for days) it sounds like:

    1) Ke$ha “TiK ToK”

    2) Britney Spears “Trouble” [LOVVVE that song!]

    3) Wynter Gordon “Dirty Talk” [LOVVVE that song too!]

    4) Madonna “Celebration”

I think it sounds like a bit of each of them combined, mostly like “TiK ToK” from the synth, and the “whoa oh a whoa a” part, they chorus, during the chorus, you can sing “TiK ToK” ‘s chorus along to it, and it fits, damn near perfectly!

Still a catchy song. And I’m not sure how they are such a random pair, they are both from CALIFORNIA, and obv rep that. Now if it was something like a Beyonce/Eminem collabo, or a Bow Wow/Ke$ha collabo, those seem more awkward to me!

  26. ~TeAM WeeZY~ May 9, 2010

I like it! But it does sound like everything else that’s out now. And I think her voice is too good for stuff like this!

    I LOVE Katy Perry, though!

  27. Love Music May 9, 2010

    Love it

  28. Missingbeyonce May 9, 2010

And she can sing listen to thinking of you

  29. Hollis May 9, 2010

Check out Cash Cash and their song ” Party in your Bedroom”.

    it’s the same song.

    LAME!

  30. rated x May 9, 2010

it may sound like TIK TOK, but this song is much better.
Umm why are people surprise that is sound similar to tik tok..the same producer produced it..
like somebody says, most big producers has a signature style. u hear a song u gonna be like oh i know who the producer is..
listen to all of neyos songs, most of them sound similar..and they were hits.

I understand where most people coming from, when they say sometimes it gets annoying hearing the same beat over and over again, from different artist with the same producers.

  31. Dev May 10, 2010

This screams Kesha big time. I betcha wrote it.

  32. Joseph McCoy May 10, 2010

    California Girlsssss.
    It’s just love.

Ke$ha watch your back .. Katy is back b****!

  33. frankie May 10, 2010

the only difference is kesha can’t sing and katy perry can..kesha is all auto tune…i saw her in SNL and she sucks balls a saw katy perry do her whole album on fuse and it was awsome and that was before i was a fan

  34. frankie May 10, 2010

of course it sound the same just like you can tell when timberland produce something (indian beats) or the dream produces something ( slowed 808s) its like a signature thing all producers have…ppl are so dumb sometimes

  35. NAS May 10, 2010

Nice but shouldn’t in a million years to be a lead single…………a fourth may be!!!

  36. Katelyn May 11, 2010

It doesnt sound that much like tik tok and if it does then it is ten times better anyway. This song is a bigg hit. I LOVE IT. and I LOVE Katy Perry!
    Definatly my summer anthem! (:

  37. RadioVet May 26, 2010

To all of you who think that this song sounding like another is a crime (especially to the one who said “what’s happened to this industry”)… why don’t you ask your Mom or Dad… or even your Grandma and Grandpa… it’s ALWAYS been this way. Producers are just like artists… they do what they do best and ride their (sound) wave until it’s not popular anymore.

This song is a hit… and deserves to be… it’s nice to hear some real “pop” music back on the radio again!

  38. chanell June 16, 2010
