Jessie J Rocks BRIT Awards Nominations Launch

Published: Sunday 16th Jan 2011 by Sam

Singing sensation Jessie J rocked the crowd at the 2011 BRIT Award Nominations Launch earlier this week. Check out the burgeoning star’s acoustic performance of ‘Do It Like A Dude’ – which currently sits at #2 on the Official UK Singles Chart – below…

Needless to say, another spectacular showing from one of the most refreshing talents to emerge from the UK in years. That said, while I thoroughly enjoy her stripped down version of the song, there are times when you just want to hear the song as it is – this, for me, being one of those moments. Given the large crowd, the original, hard-hitting version of the track will no doubt have moved them more – both figuratively and literally.

Saying that, I suspect J is adamant to assert her vocal prowess -rather than be over-powered by busy production. Especially considering the fact that the majority of her material is stripped down, showcasing instead her stellar voice (see: ‘Big White Room’, ‘Who You Are’, and ‘Mama Knows Best’).

    I’m really so sick of hearing about this girl now. She hasn’t exactly hit it big, but she’s being reported like she has.

    I’m actually glad you said that. Maybe Jessie’s music is a bit generic and uninspired at times, but she has so much talent. I love this girl.

    I like that she does acoustic performances to show off her vocals, but I agree that in this case doing the original version of the song would’ve been better suited for the occasion. She reminds me of Lady Gaga in that regard, both are pop singers, but they frequently do acoustic performances like these to showcase their natural talents. I think they do this because they know that at this point, people will write them off as minimally talented simply because of the genre of music they choose to perform.

  14. RihannaForever January 17, 2011

    @TrueBlue
    I agree. I think that the normal version of the song would have been far more appropriate for this occasion. Although I like the acoustic version and it’s great that she’s proving that she has talent, it’s getting a bit tiresome to watch her perform the acoustic version over and over again when the normal version is fantastic.

    I hope this girl blows up in the U.S. She’s just fantastic. However, I pray to God that she doesn’t pull a Katy Perry and lose all of the pop/rock edginess for hits.

    Oh, and I also noticed that she uses a vibrato technique quite a bit. It is easier to sing that way, though.

  15. Beystanbish January 17, 2011

    Damn b**** just sing the motherfucking song. All that extra ish is not needed. Sheesh

  16. True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue January 17, 2011

    ^^^ I would be MAD if she pulled a Katy Perry. She’s got more talent than her, so I hope she doesn’t sacrifice her artistic integrity just to be hot on the charts. I hope her music will go more in the vain of Pink or Christina Aguilera in the “Stripped” era.

    @TrueBlue
    To reiterate, I pray to God that Jessie never does that. She has so much more talent than Katy but their edginess (Katy at first and Jessie now) are the same, so that’s why they remind me of each other.

    Don’t get me wrong. I actually loved Teenage Dream because its 12 songs were catchy, fun pop songs. Songs to blast in your car when you’re driving around and just sing along to mindlessly. However, that’s a weak thing for even a teenager to do on a debut album, let alone a woman in her mid-20s to do on her SECOND album.

    Katy hasn’t grown. She’s actually regressed, so I’m hoping Jessie doesn’t do the same thing. I would absolutely love if she went in the P!nk direction to maintain the kickass nature of her music. Stripped-styled would be….meh.

    very talented singer
    i like

  20. True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue January 17, 2011

    ^^^ I loved the personal charm of “One of The Boys”, I was hoping that she would make her music even more personal and real from that point on, but “Teenage Dream” was a giant step backwards. Some songs on it are decent (the title track, Fireworks, Not Like The Movies), but the rest of the songs are forgettable crap to me. Yeah, I can’t believe that a grown-ass woman could make an album like that and think it’s cute to pretend to be a teenager. It’s not, it looks desperate. It’s like she wants to appeal so badly to that demographic to sell as many records as she can.

    I still like Katy, mainly because of her personality, but I’ve lost respect for her as an artist. She kind of sold out.

    Finally got to see her live last night here in Brighton after years of supporting….SO HAPPY she is finally getting the recognition….She is absolutely amazing and had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand…So down to earth and truthful on stage!

  23. RihannaForever January 17, 2011

    @TrueBlue
    Katy’s personality is great, but the fact that she thinks that it’s cute for her to be 26 pretending to be 16 is disgusting. I don’t see why she couldn’t just be more mature about it. Even Rihanna, and I’ll be honest, makes many songs that are just fun without much of a deep meaning, but they’re mature nonetheless.

    Songs like “Peacock” and “California Gurls” should not be sung by a 26 year old woman. Even Ke$ha shows more maturity than Katy these days. It’s like Katy’s having a mid-life crisis at 26. I just hope she realizes that the gimmick didn’t work and tries to do more songs that are mature.

    An album with her earlier-sounding songs would be great. I could handle if she threw in a few “Teenage Dream”s and “Firework”s for good measure, but come on.

  24. Dev January 17, 2011

    It would be nice to hear new music from her. I’m kinda tired of hearing Jessie J acoustic version every other day….. can we move on.

  25. LANDEN January 17, 2011

    SHE PUTS RIH AND KATY PERRY TO SHAME.

    AND SHE’S ORIGINAL.. YOUR LOOKING AT A

    TRUE THROWBACK SINGER. OTHER THAN

    MISS CHRISTAN AGUILERA, ALEXADRA BURKE,

    MELODY THORTON, AND A FEW OTHERS, THERE

    REALLY IS NO COMPETITION.

  26. Teflon Boy January 17, 2011

    In terms of vocals she doesn’t really have much UK competition at present as the industry has been slight in signing females on the basis of singing skills for time, esp’ in the Urban genre (Alexandra Burke and Leona aren’t Urban)…, and it is novel for an undiluted Urban singer to garner such mainstream backing and acceptance so soon (the fact she’s white obviously shouldering most of the reason). But make no mistake, if Jessie J fails to keep the hits coming in, esp’ in light of all the hype she’s had off the back of ONE song then she’ll be sidelined for someone else or dropped…., or have to do what Ellie Goulding’s done and revert to hackneyed cover songs i.e. Your Song to stay paid, relevant and in the game. The point is no matter how much Katy Perry and the like change between first and second album it’s probably because they know failing to do so only results in one outcome…, Irrelevance.

  27. lola January 17, 2011

    I just don’t get this chick! I honestly think you guys are praising her and hyping her up because she is actually singing. I CANNOT STAND HER VOCIE! She sounds and looks so damn stupid when she’s performing. I hate how she’s putting so much emphases on her words when she’s singing and using that dumbass, fakeass, island accent. To me, she’s an imitator. She has no real soul. She has a lot of passion, but lacks emotion. I don’t care for Christina, but she has some soul in her tone and powerhouse vocals. Singers like Joss Stone and my girl Amy Winehouse are phenomenal soul singers who sang from the heart and are natural about it. Jessie J doesn’t have that. It seems like she’s being to technical about it. It’s like, will you just sing the damn song? She definitely isn’t one of the best singers in the world or one of a kind. It’s her edgy, rocker, hip-hop image and sassy attitude that has people intrigued and it’s boring to me. She’s a mix of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Fergie. If she wants to be a rocker, edgy, real singer, she definitely needs to take notes from the wonderful singer PINK!

    VOICE*

  29. gabs January 18, 2011

    She has a good voice but NO stage presence. Look, she can sing great but shes singing like shes in the studio. Its too calculated and shes trying to hard. She doesnt look like shes having fun. Sometimes its better to sacrifice certain notes so you can move around the stage and interact with people more and be loose. I think shes being hyped because she has a good voice and can sing live. She should have done the normal version and saved the acoustic for radio station visits or talk shows. Plus, I cant take the song seriously as an acoustic song. Shes singing it like its a deep meaningful ballad when its really a trashy dance song. Could you imagine Ke$ha doing Tik Tok (if she could sing) as a ballad on the guitar? Just…NO. Jessie is talented but shes doing it all wrong. Terrible song to debut with and perform in this style.

  30. gabs January 18, 2011

    @Rihannaforever I completely agree with you about Katy Perry regressing. I thought I was the only one! Her “one of the boys” album had great songs like “Ur so gay” and “mannequin” aside from her mainstream hits and it felt like she was singing her age. The Teenage Dream songs are fun in the car but they are a major downgrade from how she started. I thought she was more pop/rock and saw her live playing guitar and everything and shes turned into a Britney/rihanna wannabee. She was much better before
