New Song: Ne-Yo – ‘Otis (Freestyle)’

Published: Monday 8th Aug 2011 by Sam

As previously reported, R&B crooner Ne-Yo is set to make a foray into the mixtape market ahead of the release of his forthcoming new album.

So as to whet appetites, the Grammy winner has served up his own take on Kanye West and Jay-Z‘s new single ‘Otis’. Sound timing given the release of the pair’s ‘Watch The Throne’ LP today.

How did Shaffer fare? Take a listen after the jump…

LMAO! I can’t stop laughing at this!! Who told him this was a good idea?! His flow was weak and he didn’t ride the beat at all. It was like he was just talking over the track. SMH.

I knew that people were gonna try to say he was pullilng a ‘Chris Brown’ with the mixtape but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I figured it was gonna be a r&b mixtape and that it would be a preview to what was gonna be on his next album. I was praying he wasn’t gonna try to rap! SMH. Hopefully he will be singing on the rest of the mixtape and he is gonna get back to the old Ne Yo. I don’t think a ‘aggressive Ne Yo’ is gonna be believable.

I died when he ran out of breath at the end! WTF?! You were barely rapping how you run out of breath? LMAO! And did he really say ‘I thought I was a thug for a minute’? LMAO! Ne Yo just Stop! SMH!

He said it himself: “I’m not a rapper…We’re just going to have a little fun”.It’s just a track he recorded for fun.I won’t take it seriously and I don’t think I’m going to listen to it again, but it was nothing but free studio time. That’s all…Btw, did he really have to kiss Kanye’s and Jay’s asses???

I wouldn’t say I am losing respect for Ne Yo, I still respect him cause he IS talented and has produced a lot of quality music for himself & others, I even have his albums, expcept the last one. I just wish wouldn’t try to be something he isn’t.

I totally understand he wants to go in a different direction but I just don’t think this ‘hard’ image is gonna work for him. Ne Yo has made his mark as the ‘r&b gentlemen’ that’s his lane & he owns it! I don’t think people are going to be open to the new more aggresive image! It’s just not believable coming from him at all.

I don’t think doing mixtape means he is trying to stay ‘relevant’ either. Everyone is doing mixtapes now. Drake does them to but people don’t say he’s trying to stay relevant! Releasing free music for fans is one of the most generous things a artist can do! I even think doing the mixtapes helped Chris out! After ‘Graffiti’ he released mixtapes damn near back to back and helped build his fanbase back up. People realized he wasn’t just gonna give up and he was gonna keep pushing to get back to the top! It’s not a bad move for Ne Yo, it’s just the music has to be up to par like it was for Breezy. Some of the music on Breezy’s mixtape was better than what was on his albums.

I am still anticipating new music from him Ne Yo though, but he can keep this s***.

I def didn’t hate it but I got a little confused and distracted toward the middle, his vocal got lost in the music, I couldn’t understand him. I really hope he doesn’t go the ” bad boy” route, it doesn’t fit him. I don’t think he’s quite the gentleman he thinks he is but he’s clearly not giving me “thug “tea either! Oh well glad hes trying something different.

  13. nice_gurl August 9, 2011

Ha…..it was alright. At least he’s experimenting and trying.

awwwww man… it isnt that bad yall…lol well…hmmm

  15. Cookie August 9, 2011

Didn’t hate it but hard to hear the cursing from Ne Yo. It just doesn’t fit and he was good at what he does. Like one comment said he owned being a “gentleman”. There is no one to come even close so why change?

  16. MichelleWFan August 9, 2011

It was dope ! He has a fun that can do anything ! I think he definetly killed it !

Ne-yo isn’t too bad of a rapper. I love this and his “A Milli” cover
