Rihanna Scores 11th Billboard #1

Published: Wednesday 2nd Nov 2011 by David

Rihanna‘s fan base may have found it difficult to provide her with a #1 album even after six years, but when it comes to supporting her singles- their buying power is unmatched.

You guessed it.

As of today, the Islander’s latest single ‘We Found Love’ is #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Helping her to surpass  Janet Jackson‘s record of having 10 #1s on the chart, ‘Love’ is the first single from Rihanna’s upcoming album ‘Talk That Talk’ to reach the top spot.

To date, the single has a digital sales figure of 1,057,000  making it the 20th download by the performer to move over a million units. Further cementing her status as the most downloaded female artist in the chart’s history.

Sure to serve as phenomenal news for the singer who is currently gearing up to release her new album on November 21st, the single follows the success of her highest selling digital release to date ‘Love The Way You Lie’, by the Rapper Eminem on which she lent her vocals too.

With  5.1 million digital copies sold, it exceeds the success her very own ‘Disturbia’ which has moved 4.3 million since its release in July 2008.

Well done Rihanna.

Though this achievement will only serve to reinforce the impact she has made on Pop music since her debut, it remains to be seen if Fenty’s success will ever really match or better the iconic nature of the acts whose records she has trumped today.

For though her position as this generation’s singles Queen is now stronger than ever, where is her Grammy?

Or at the very least, where is the critical acclaim awarded to the Janet‘s  Madonna‘s and Mariah‘s of the world who were renowned for their ‘art’ and commercial success, their look and their message.

As Pop now welcomes Rihanna to the “11 and over Club” ,despite the fact that she has not written, produced or arranged any of the singles that have afforded her that luxury, let us hope ‘Talk That Talk‘ goes onto become more than a collection of Top 40 singles, but an album that goes on to truly stand the test of time.
